Got my 42042 as a gift several days ago, it's my first Technic set. Got the a-model done, it's pretty cool.
Made this highlighted version of the gear system in the LDD (based on full 42042 model from other guy) for easier comprehension.

Thinking of reusing the gearbox for the crawler MOC with extended track controls:
left lever for the left track (fast forward, slow forward, fast backwards, slow backwards), right lever for the right track.
Inability to switch on fast and slow simultaneously and jam the gears comes in handy.
The crane part will be absent in this model since I have no bricks for this :)
