Ship's Figurehead contest - Discussion thread
Fender Bender replied to El Bucanero's topic in LEGO Pirates
Argh! three weeks! I won't have my lego until the contest is over :'-( nooo! -
well, I wouldn't consider to even appear threatening (or cough in a threatening manner) in Z's waters X-D I have only the one ship, and she'd be blasted to matchwood before anyone managed to say as much as "wow"

I'm not sure Italy would work (did they even have a navy??) And Norrington were right about the Dutch and the British. I think it was called the Anglo-Dutch war or something. The problem with Britain having any allies is that the British Empire basically waged war against everyone, although at different times. I think this is one of the reasons why they ended up having such a large and impressive navy anyway..

all right, small update. I visited my countryside house (where the ship is docked) to add a few things and take some more pictures. The sails are right now just pieces of paper that I cut out (rather roughly and unceremoniously), mainly for illustration purposes, but also to check out how it would look when finished. Not really aesthtetically correct but practical. What I found was that the sails on the foremast were.... puny, compared to those of the mainmast. So I guess I'll be redesigning yardarms next time >8-) I also snapped a few shots of the crew as well as the interior of the captain's cabin. I found the piano/clavichord thingy in one of your indexes *y* The barrel poking out of the deck in one pic is actually part of a simple yet effective mechanism to easily run out the guns on the lower deck by turning it left or right :) check out the folder guys! :)

Again I would like to offer you my compliments for this truthfully stunning ship *wub**wub* I have a question however... I realize it would mean an enormous amount of work and cost an equally large amount of money, but wouldn't you consider reworking the broadside by squeezing in another gun deck? I think your boat is so large it could easliy fit 20 or so more guns.. :)

actually I think the second sounds like the closest bet. However, I don't know much about bomb vessels so I might be completely wrong on this one... basically i just skimmed the article and noted that there were a few smaller craft with the name, which might have led me to draw a hasty conclusion in my previous post |-/

according to wikipedia there has been a number of ships in the Royal Navy with the name Endeavour through the history. One of them actually matched mr. Duke's vessel quite well in size and armanent :) Wikipedia article

POTC 3 - From a Pirate LEGO Fanatics Perspective
Fender Bender replied to hans-thegreat's topic in LEGO Pirates
WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!! From a MOCer's perspective I agree with Z (can I call you that?) that POTC3 is just as good a source of inspiration as its prequels (if not an even better one) The junks were interresting as were the EITC flagship but what did it for me was the "clean" Flying Dutchman. Now it will be considerably easier brick-wise to build this ship-the colours are as far as i saw just black, gold and perhaps a little bit of dark grey! you could say it was a bit dull to watch the Endeavour being creamed before even getting off a single shot, but then again, the pirates have the producers, the fans AND the director on their side :-D -
This is a really nice little ship! I love the meramid figurehead *wub* , as a matter of fact, I might (as Phes suggested) copy it over to the Triton's Vengeance :)

thank you cyryl :)

Your ship is a work of art mr. Z *y* *y* Do you have any comparison pictures of the Phantom and the Arbiter II?
-
hmm, yeah maybe I should. The design of the figurehead was fairly difficult to decide on, so it could still be subject to change. However it leads me to the question; What is a Triton? As far as I know it could either be a sort of merman or a roman sea god who made storms with his harp thingy. So far, the ship's name is more a reference to the sea god than a merman :) I would have to make him out of bionicle parts (for some reason I don't like using minifigs for figureheads, guess I'm weird that way), but that would make him too large 8-( You guys have any suggestions for a different figurehead?

Hi again and thanks for all the comments! that sail tutorial of yours is really excellent, sails coming up! yep, I am a bit of a fan of the BSB. It was the only really big pirate ship i managed to get my paws on before the theme went out of production. I also have two Imperial Flagships. The Vengeance was originally built merely as a BSB redesign but luckily i stumbeled across the remains of another BSB in a friend's basement, and he curteously donated the parts to the cause *sweet* tumbelhome aye... again I had to sacrifice it due to lack of bricks. I figured i'd have to place a really large order to get enough tiles/slopes to build it... it wouldn't fit in with my budget and savings 8-( My dad used to own that model of The Sovereign of the Seas in your picture phred ;-) While I grew up he went on and on about sails this and Dutch-Anglo war that, and he's also a big fan of lego :-D I've made a few castle MOCs in the past, but I think they have been destroyed during moving etc... I'll see if i can find something :)

Well... The three square rigged masts are a fairly modern invention. As far as I know, ships up until the late 17th century carried four masts, the fourth and smallest at the stern is called a bonaventure mast. And they did have lateen sails :) . As for the forecastle I agree it looks a bit to squareish. However, I believe that is how ships looked at that time. If you take a look at Dead man's Chest you'll notice the bow is similarily shaped. The red shutters.. they are at the moment covering up the fact that there are no windows 8-| I'll order a few from BL once i can get my hands on some dubloons :-D same thing goes for the empty gunports The pictures are somewhat blurry, I know, but I'll try and see if I can get a few better ones in a small while.

30a Heya guys! I've been watching this forum for quite a while now, and finally I've managed to build a ship to show you :) So this is my first MOC ship. She is modeled after a 17th century English warship like the Prince Royal or the Sovereign of the Seas (only smaller) She carries 34 standard lego cannons, as well as a few smaller, swivel ones. Four masts (the sails and rigging are on their way). Her colour scheme is vaguely based on the BSB, with a little tribute to PotC's Flying Dutchman at the bow :) She is built out of the standard wide prefab hull with six mid-sections. I would have posted a picture, but my extremely limited proficiency with computers is in the way (a little help, please?) Comments/critics/reviews are welcome. My brickshelf folder Edit Bonaparte: Picture resized and added.
