I reckon about the only X-wing that really comes close to the original design especially around the cockpit is 7191 Ultimate Collector series from around 1999/2000....

The base has got a Sentry droid, trap door, sectret armoury , tele-porter, subterranian disco and orgasmatron!!... all very play-able (well except 'The Sleeper' reff!!) I have to say that in 1977 I was 8years old myself and I've been a huge fan ever since the opening credits!!! hope that's better!!
