  1. Though I've only been at this for a couple of months, I spent a few weeks prior just looking through all the sets that were, had been and were rumoured to soon be available and made a few lists. As I'm slowly getting closer to the abyss of 50 years old, it was OT all the way, with a focus on ships and Tatooine to start. I've watched a few seasons of the Clone Wars and found it to be alright, and the hold the same PT opinion of many others my age, so sets from those eras don't get more than a passing glance (I did make an exception for the Republic Gunship however...it's pretty cool) when I'm scanning/browsing/searching for the next item on a list. Currently I'm only really interested in large display pieces, especially the UCS line, and once that list is finished I'll continue with smaller themed sets such as Jabba's palace, barge, skiff and Rancor pit, Hoth based sets, or {shudder} maybe even the Ewoks. Minifigs are something that I like to have to flesh out a display (can't fly a ship without a pilot sort of thing), but otherwise I really don't pay much attention to them. The subtle differences in pants, torsos and faces are mostly wasted on me, although as my collection builds over time I might start to notice and appreciate the details more. Right now everything is simply lined up along narrow shelves in what is probably the most boring way possible. I have a 6’x12’ snooker table that is currently holding most of my R/C aircraft (I suck at snooker) that would make an excellent display table though...all I need is some ambition and vision and I'd like to make something like Something_Awesome is planning to make things much more interesting to look at. I'm still not exactly sure which side of the collector/investor line I stand on yet. Calling them an investment makes it easier to rationalize the purchases I've made, but selling anything would just leave a vacuum that would need to be filled immediately. On the other hand once the available space has been filled to capacity, I'll either need to stop (noooooo....) or store/sell something to make room. Or build a bigger house. Hmmm. A bigger house....
  2. That's perfect Brickdoctor! Thanks!
  3. Ahhh, the eeeevil iPad autocorrect rears it's ugly head again. Is there any way to edit the topic header? Or is that a mods only thing? Anyhoo, it looks like I just need to build more! I'm sure there's something about just facing your fears, so building more and more seems like excellent therapy. :-)
  4. Heh, we have a pretty good understanding when it comes to each other's spending, but "yawning chasm" is a very good description alright. I might have gone just a little overboard this time, and will have to keep the door locked on this pile for a while longer. :-)
  5. So I'm on my fourth Lego set ever, the UCS B Wing, and I realized that almost every time I look for a piece, and every time I look for a small piece that I don't spot immediately, I'm afraid it simply won't be there and my build will come to a grinding halt for weeks while I wait for the part to arrive. I don't know if it's from reading about build stopping missing piece stories I've read on the forums, Lego's easily found "my set has a missing piece" section, or some holdover from when I was a kid, but for some reason I'm sure it's going to happen to me. I've never been a sorter, preferring to merrily root through the pile like a pig looking for truffles, but maybe I need to start? Anyone else ever have this fear? Does it go away? Is is manageable? Do I think too much (according to my wife that's a rare enough occurrence anyway)? Or should I trust in the Lego packaging machine's abilities and hope to achieve a zen like state while assembling the model, and if something is missing it's a karma thing, and I should move on to something else. Like posting in forums. :-)
  6. Great stuff! Thanks to all who worked at and made these available, much appreciated.
  7. Seeing as I have just started collecting and have no yellow Minifigs at all I think this is a great choice. The figure goes back to the beginning of an era, and fits very well with the beginning of my collection. Now if I'd been involved since 99 I might think differently, but even in my other hobbies and collections I don't think a retro/duplicate item has ever soured me to the point that I denied myself an interesting purchase because of it.
  8. I just started building the UCS Imperial Shuttle, and I've seen reviews and articles about Lego bricks yellowing with age. Is this something to really be concerned about and I should keep everything in a dark room, or is it something that takes years to manifest and is only an issue for the most serious collectors?
  9. Hey all. I've never been to a Lego store (what with being from SK and all that) and was wondering of it'll be worth the drive when we're going to be in N Edmonton in a couple of weeks? I'm not looking for anything in particular, so am a little afraid of leaving with a truckload of impulse buys if the selection is as good as I'm hoping. :-)
  10. Heh, I might be in deep trouble if my wife knew about my recent purchases. In two weeks I've had a steady stream of boxes show up in the mail, including all four Planet Series, 10174, 10188, 10198, 10212, 10225, 10227, 10240, 9492, 9493, 9495 and the Technics sets 8110 and 8258. I'm still stalking 10030 on eBay, am hoping to find or bricklink 10179 (of course), and will definitely be getting the Sandcrawler once it's available. Did I mention I'm a big fan of the original trilogy? And I think I'm going to need more shelving soon too. I haven't had this much fun in years.
  11. These are great! And once I figure out this whole LDD thing out will be attempting a build myself. Really impressive how everything fits within the criteria you defined and also scales so well with the Death Star and Tie fighter. Thanks for coming up with these and sharing so those us us with lesser vision can enjoy them also.
  12. I think I'm too new here to be able to send a PM, but as soon as I'm able to I'll be placing an order for a full squad. These look fantastic, and as Aliens is in my top five favorite movies they're a definite must have!
  13. Hello all. I recently rediscovered Lego after playing Lego Star Wars on my iPad, and am now in the process of trying to obtain all of the UCS sets that I didn't even know existed a month ago. After ~35 years of a Lego-less life I'm now diving back in with enthusiasm, and it's been great so far!
