General Pirates of the Caribbean Theme Discussion Thread
Mr McGow replied to Oswald the Rabbit's topic in LEGO Pirates
I'm so excited about this theme. My mum is an AFOL too, but only collects the minifigs and gives the rest of the bricks to me. She also loves Pirates of the Carribean (especially Johnny Depp). With a bit of luck I'm going to make out like a pirate here -
Hello slopemodified, welcome to Eurobricks (from a fellow Aussie). Massive sortings make me cringe too! Whenever I start doing one, I usually find an interesting piece, think of a MOC it might look good in and then get side tracked doing that (rather than sorting) Cheers!

Youve captured the look of the ute really well Dr_Spock. Good choice for the head of the minifig driver too. My brother's got one of these (but his is white). They are great for carting motorbikes around. To give it an extra Aussie touch you could put a dog in the back tray. Pity TLG don't make red or blue cattle dogs!

What a clever little vignette. I've never seen the hinge bricks (or rubber bands) used in that manner before. P.S is that KimT and Dave Shaddix?

What a superb MOC I Scream Clone. What impresses me the most is the attention to all the small details - for example the white book at 45 degrees in the bookcase, Craniac's mounted head on the desk and the ladder leaning up against the tank. The mermaid tanks is probably the best done tank I've ever seen in a MOC. Did you use this part Panel 6 x 6 x 9 Curved Top in trans clear for the front pane? I also admire the way you have used the trans-red color to give the 'tentacle door' room an ominous red glow in the background. I hope "young Kathleen" turns out to be the space police chick in disguise. Ichabod needs to have his evil butt busted!

Great job Temet Nosce. The mixture of the new and old style architecture is also quite reminiscent of some of the nightclubs I used to frequent back in the day. I like the way you've used the red and black interior scheme. You've captured the differant 'zones' of the typical nightclub really well. The extensive use of tiling gives it a modern reflective look. I also like the the way you have done the stairs and also the red lounge and stools. Will it be possible to incorporate some lighting bricks into it? That would look sweet too. You should have fun filling it up with people. Some of the series one and two minifigs will look right at home. The DJ and the pop singer are naturals for a MOC like yours. I can also picture the surfer dude and skateboarder having a punch-up over the cheerleader! Perhaps the caveman and ninja would make good bouncers - "Hey no zombies allowed". Anyhow great job

Hello BrettBrick, I'm a newbie too! If you haven't spotted it already, you might find the Aussie sales thread useful: Aussie sales! Cheers

LegoBuilder, I'm just starting to build some MOC's too. These are some of the ways I've gone about aqquiring the bricks I need: - Have a read of this thread - The Bargain Hunter's Guide to LEGO - The creator sets are good for building up a basic brick collection. For example if you're building city MOC's then 5891 - Apple Tree House might be useful. - As others have already suggested, Bricklink is a good place to purchase specific pieces. I often start at this page: Catalog: Parts. - Slightly off topic, but the tutorials contained in this thread make for a good read too: Advanced Building Techniques Hope that helps!

They're all good, but the mime one was particulary funny (Lego Cities first serial killer?). The vampire one was good too. It looks a bit like a family portrait. Perhaps this (i.e a bat) is what happens when a witch and a vampire have a baby together!

I've had multiple dealings with maxspace. Every order has been perfect, especially the packaging. He's the king of little plastic jiffy bags!

Oh my gosh, this is just superb. I think you've captured the phillosphy behind this vessel really well - i.e it looks like it could take a bit of a pounding and whilst not bristling with weapons (reflecting it's medical rather than offensive role), anything that takes it on should expect at least a bloody nose. Great use of the contrast behind the white and grey. Also a super use of the various printed tiles as well. Well done!

This is a great topic and one which I've actually been thinking about lately. Personally I'm starting to get a bit bored with the Star Wars theme, so I've dug out all of my childhood clasic space sets and reassembled them. Anyhow, in a perfect (and unrealistic!) world I'd love to see a UCS style Minbari Sharlin class cruiser or a Narn heavy cruiser (both from Babylon 5). Lightning Tiger also mentioned earlier about Battlestar Galactica sets - I'd love to see these as well (Hee Hee - as a kid I once took too my green baseplates with a pair of sissors and cut them into a battlestar shape ). However more realistically (possibly) I'd like to see a large classic space style starship, followed up by some sort of space base - also in the classic space style. It could be characterised by: - A minium of large moulded pieces. - Baseplates!! Particulary ones like 454-1: Two Lunar Landing Plates (the younglings could use them in their Clone Wars MOCS!) - Emphasis upon exploration rather than conflict. Although the ship would still be well armed - sort of the 'we won't start it, but by gosh we'll finish it' phillosphy. - Transparent yellow pieces - Focus upon build rather than play features. The Space Police 3 set #5974 : Galactic Enforcer was a nice ship. But as Artanis I noted earlier re. the jail pods - "they stand out like an arm coming out of your stomach". - openable cockpits Anyhow these are some of my own personal thoughts. If I saw a set like this on the shelves, I know I would break my 'don't pay full price for a set' rule! Cheers.

Aussie sales! Share the news of LOCAL sales!
Mr McGow replied to Darth_Legois's topic in Buy, Sell, Trade and Finds
Apologies if this is old news, but I was in Toyworld (Gympie) this morning and the lego rep also happened to be there. I asked him when the series two minifigs would be available on the shelves and he said next month (couldn't/wouldn't specify date). I don't know wether this pertains to just Gympie, Toyworld, Queensland (or some combination thereof). Interestingly, he also said Lego were planning to release a series three, four and five next year. He had no knowledge of what they may be though. Also BigW (Gympie) had a couple of the $67 Galactic Enforcer (5974) sets (I use the past tense because I bought them both ). They had some at the beginning of their July sale, but none since untill now - so it may be worthwhile checking your local BigW too. Like last time the shelf price said $117, but they scanned at $67. Cheers -

The Gympie (Qld) Big W had set 5974 for $67 too. Likewise, there was also no advertising - the shelf price ticket said $117. When scanned though it said $67. Was visting my parents up there, so don't know if my local one (Mooloolaba) is the same. -

I agree - it appears to be the same set/same contents. I bought one last year - good value - although to the best of my recollection it didn't have many plate pieces - mostly small bricks and slopes. Also agree about the toy sales in general. Usually at this time of year I get excited to the point where my wife threatens to sedate me (and confiscate keycards) . This year I'm feeling pretty 'meh' about the whole thing. (except for the landspeeder ) -

Thankyou for the Harry Potter pricelist hewman. The ones I want come to about $420 - by twisted fate the same as my car rego, due at the same time A question if I may. Will these sets go on special around x-mas? Or will there be sales before then? Or is it one of things you can't predict? Also, (sorry I know that's 4 questions), when do we usually get a heads up on the big K-Mart mid year set (e.g Death star, UCS Falcon etc.)? Thanks and hello all you fellow Aussie's. -
My corresponding number (10153) is this: Train Motor 9v Apparently this set is now out of production. Does that mean I'm obsolete? But I still have so much to give! I wonder which lucky person is going to get 10179 - the UCS Millennum Falcon?

Why do people buy new sets and never open them?
Mr McGow replied to Ambo100's topic in General LEGO Discussion
I can safely say that I've never bought a lego set and not got to bedtime, without at least opening the box and looking through the instructions. Even when I buy Lego for other people, I have to fight the temptation not to open them up Putting them together is another matter though. That's usually determined by work/home life demands. I like to construct the set's when nothing else is going on. It's part of my 'chill' time. Actually I wonder if I can use that as a tax deduction. As a form of stress management Lego sets do help me preform my job better I've never purchased any sets for investment value. This is mainly because I can only afford the sets that I want for myself. Looking at the prices on e-bay and bricklink though, I wish I had at least purchased some of the smaller sets (e.g #4475 - Jabba's message or #7104 - Desert Skiff) and squirreled them away. Although these are both OT star wars set's, small sets from other themes (e.g Batman, Harry Potter) seems to be worth 10x (plus) there original RRP as well. BTW dave123 your thoughts on the bigger sets and rare parts was well presented and very logical. At any rate a big to bricklink for sorting out all the prices for me. Leaves me free to consume and construct! -
Thanks for the warm welcome everybody. Also thanks for for the sales thread heads-up hewman. I'll keep a close eye on that one. Whittleberry, I live on the sunshine coast - in close striking distance to a K-Mart, Big W, Myers, Target and Toyworld! The closest toy'r us is about an hour away. Bye

Hey thanks for the welcome Zorbas. It was great having lot's of Lego as a kid. I always wished they had released farm type sets back then. My sisters and I just combined our Lego with plastic farm animals. That's the beauty of Lego, it's only limited by your imagination! I also should have added in my original post, I believe Lego has done a great job with the space police 3 line. I originally bought them on special for spare parts. I couldn't resist doing them though and was very impressed. In fact I've still got intact the Galactic Enforcer. It reminded me so much of the big ship models that I used to droll over as a kid. Bye

Rufus - an excellent review of an excellent set. This was the first UCS I got and to date the most enjoyable build I've got from a set. I wasn't quite prepared for the length of it when completed. I can still remember the "woah" when you first really appreciate it's size. Just recently my cat sent it flying to the floor. I've sent it over to my nephew to reassemble and he's having a great time with it too. Thanks again for the review.

Hello everybody. This is a great site. I'm particulary enjoying the news and reviews. I've been visting as a guest over the last twelve months. Thought it was about time to register and say hello. Anyway some things about me / musings on things Lego: - My first set was classic space #920 (Rocket Launch Pad), recieved as a present in 1979. I've still got all the pieces, although now their quite scratched and faded. I used to play with my Lego in the sandpit - I had a fortunate childhood. I was known around the neighbourhood as "the kid with all the Lego" - I primarily collect OT star wars theme. My first buy was the Landspeeder (7110). The largest is the UCS Rebel Blockade Runner (10019). I'd love to get the UCS Falcon, but, lotto win excepting, I sense that opportunity is fast slipping away. I've used bricklink to reconstruct some of the vehicles that I didn't originally purchase. For me mini-figs are not a big factor in my purchasing decisons. - The 2010 OT line up hasn't really set my world on fire. I think it's primarly because I've got most of the vehicles (AT-AT, Slave 1, snow speeder) already. I like that Lego are re-releasing these though. This allows people new to the hobby (or emerging from their dark age) to get there hands on some great models. I must admitt I poo-pooed the mid-scale concept when I first heard about it. After seeing the job they did with the Falcon (#7778) though, I'm now looking forward to the Star Destroyer. - Haven't ever reallly gotten into the Clone Wars theme. Some of the models are great - the Venator (#8309) and Republic Attack Gunship (# 7676) in particular. My interest and budget just won't allow it unfortunately. - I've purchased the odd Harry Potter and Batman sets, and regret not buying more - especially the Batman. If it's an AFOL that invents the time machine, enhancing their collection will be it's first use! Wonder what that would do to the time line (and Bricklink prices)? Really, really, really (yes really!) looking forward to the new Harry Potter sets this year. Already starting squirrelling away the dosh for when they go on special. Perhaps it's serendipity that I'm luke warm on the OT star wars this year. - Lego hit a home run with their city range last/ mostly this year. I'm not sure why, but they reminded me of the sets from my childhood. Perhaps it was because they depicted normal people doing normal things. Either way my sister - who collects the city theme - lapped them up. - The Lego Group needs to reflect carefully on price rises in Australia. For me at least, Lego is starting to cross that murky line between "quality toy" and luxury item. My purchasing pattern is shifting towards buying sets only when they are on special. I understand, at least on a superficial level, TLG's global marketing strategy and subsequent pricing policy. I agree that Australia got through the GFC comparatively well. There are however a lot of internal economic forces that are ''Nickel and Diming" me to death. Having said that I must confess I do still make the occasional back set purchase from Bricklink. - Anyhow thanks for creating such a friendly and informative community Eurobricks. See you all on the forums! - P.S sorry for any spelling errors. Everytime I tried spellcheck the whole post just disapears!
