WesternOutlaw Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 Near the outskirts of town, not far from the desolate town of Grave Stone, a spooky old shack stands next to a dead black tree. It is rumored that someone or something was burried under that old black tree years ago before the gold in the hills that surround Grave Stone went dry. Harold Axewood, a rugged mountain man, lives in the spooky old shack. Some say that Harold was once married to a woman by the name of Millicent Clemens and that he drowned her in the well near his shack, burrying her in a shallow grave under the old black tree. Her spirit haunts the shack and she can sometimes be seen as a witch flying above the tree. No one visits Harold Axewood anymore, but on any given day, he can be found chopping wood outside the Spooky Shack *skull* . Quote
Brick Miner Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 ooohhh... i really like that well. nice use for the 4x4 barrel. i was trying to incorporate a well into HAUNTED PASS, but couldn't get anything i was happy with... *considers adapting the 4x4 barrel idea* :-P though, im not sure about that tree. i mean i like the "black tree" concept (shivers run down my spine 8- Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 10, 2006 Governor Posted October 10, 2006 Brickster, you're certainly churning out these Western Grave Stone sub-theme MOCs at an incredible rate! Probably a bit too fast for my liking because I like to gradually discuss aspects of the MOC and its presentation but that becomes difficult when there are several MOCs at once. However, I shall do my best! The tree definitely stands out but I wonder if it would benefit from 2 x 2 circular bricks rather than the square Quote

I tried the old traditional square design and just didn't care for the look. It kept resembling a bagota. Then I thought, let's try the big barrel. I think it came out pretty well (well)... though, im not sure about that tree. i mean i like the "black tree" concept (shivers run down my spine 8- Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 10, 2006 Governor Posted October 10, 2006 Is that skeleton in the barrel and the structure immediately above it supposed to be a well? I build when I have the inspiration going, the same way I write. It either comes or it's gone; and when it's not flowing, no amount of effort can make up for it. Right now, I've got Grave Stone in my head. Appreciate your comments, however. You definately add a critical/constructive eye. Its understandable you build and write when you're inspired because that's obviously the best time to do it, however it is possible to delay posting your work. Maybe delaying ruins your momentum or something, but I just want your hard work to get the maximum discussion possible. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted October 10, 2006 Author Posted October 10, 2006 Is that skeleton in the barrel and the structure immediately above it supposed to be a well? Yes. It doesn't look like a well to you? Its understandable you build and write when you're inspired because that's obviously the best time to do it, however it is possible to delay posting your work. Maybe delaying ruins your momentum or something, but I just want your hard work to get the maximum discussion possible. Don't worry. I have noticed that you and Brick Miner are the only regulars that provide feedback. But that doesn't deter me from building. Not taking images and posting does, however. I can't sit and wait when I draw momentum from building, taking pictures, and posting. I do maintain an index for those wanting to look at the MOCs. Think of it as a Lego Library. Quote
Asuka Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I could be wrong but for me it looks like you are reducing your buildings in a minimalism way which reminds of the Lego style back in the Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 13, 2006 Governor Posted October 13, 2006 Yes. It doesn't look like a well to you? I think what confused me was the brown barrel, however if the barrel was a shade of grey I think that would help me distinguish it as such. This is probably because grey was used to represent stone in the Pirate theme particular with BURPs, so I associate grey with stone, wheras I see brown and think wood. Afterall the piece was intended to depict a wooden barrel. Don't worry. I have noticed that you and Brick Miner are the only regulars that provide feedback. But that doesn't deter me from building. Governor Mister Phes Posted October 14, 2006 Governor Posted October 14, 2006 I had a traditional square grey well initially and I hated it. I tried using the barrel piece and having it round, I think it came out pretty good. Let's just say that in this part of Grave Stone, bricks were in short supply (despite the mountain behind the shack)- always being used for tomb stones an all ;-) . You could always spray paint it grey :-D I do appreciate your feedback (very much as always Phes), but I have to admit I can't recall your MOCs. Do you have an index of them perhaps? Maybe I need to revisit. I checked in the MOC section of the Pirate Forum but didn't see too much. A vignette and one other build as I recall. I'll take a look if you provide a link or two. I don't have a great deal of MOCs at the moment and if you want to see them indexed then visit my MOCpage. There's links back to their Eurobrick thread on each MOCpage, so if you feel inclined to write anything the Eurobrick threads would be better than the MOCpages. Quote
Darkness Falls Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 Yeesh... dark backstory, don't you think? Still, a very good MoC. I agree with Phes... the well would make more sense as stone... but the barrel keeps a rustic look to the set. Hope to see more. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted October 15, 2006 Author Posted October 15, 2006 Yeesh... dark backstory, don't you think? Usually my style... But I don't think it's too dark. I usually try to add a little humor to the story (like the name Axewood- he holds an axe and can be found chopping wood on any given day ;-) ). My "spooky" stories are usually a little dark though, that's the nature of a good scary story ;-) . But I think a fig of a witch on a broom flying in the night sky would have really added to the MOC or image. Quote

Dark? That story is awesome! Too bad its too intense for an official LEGO set. Do we ever get to find out if something was burried beneath the tree? And how does one bury something beneath a tree with so many roots getting in the way? Quote

And how does one bury something beneath a tree with so many roots getting in the way? Thanks. Harold's sturdy old axe/hatchet no doubt. I mentioned that he can be found chopping firewood on any given day. But who's the skeleton in the well? Perhaps it's Millicent until he gets those bigger roots cut... Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted October 15, 2006 Governor Posted October 15, 2006 How come the sheriff has questioned Harold over the disappearance of Millicent Clemens? Surely he's not too cowardly to do his duty? Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted October 16, 2006 Author Posted October 16, 2006 The sheriff of Grave Stone was one of the first to leave; although no one ever knew what happened to him... *skull* Quote

WesternOutlaw Posted October 17, 2006 Author Posted October 17, 2006 Definately. Grave Stone is Northwest of Legorado, near the foot hills of the Dark Mountains (I'd say at least four to five days from Legorado). Quote
