Ecclesiastes Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) The Mountie As one of the few, the mountie stands for justice and he will do anything to keep the prairies and forrests safe. But sometimes, he comes too late! But he will chase the one who is responsible for this crime. And put him to justice! Edited April 27, 2012 by Tazmaniac Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 This is a cool diorama however the figure is not that outstanding and I think it should be for the purpose of category 3. As a custom minifig I really wanted to see some custom made hats, decals, coats or paintings on minifigs ... Though I must say I really like the tree, rocks and the broken carriage. The only addition to the land would be some relief on the ground - a few more plates to make the ground uneven. Quote
tedbeard Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 Great use of the new guardsman torso! And lovely little scene. The revolver in the skeleton hand is very effective. Quote
2maxwell Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 (edited) I like this. That being said, I feel like this hat (or a pith hemet for an earlier era) would have been more suited to it. Also, I disagree that the minifig needs decals or custom parts. I think that if a realistic mountie can be made with fewer, official parts, its not only better, but also captures the spirit of Lego better. Edited August 17, 2011 by 2maxwell Quote
Ecclesiastes Posted August 17, 2011 Author Posted August 17, 2011 (edited) First, thank you all for the comments! This is a cool diorama however the figure is not that outstanding and I think it should be for the purpose of category 3. As a custom minifig I really wanted to see some custom made hats, decals, coats or paintings on minifigs ... Though I must say I really like the tree, rocks and the broken carriage. The only addition to the land would be some relief on the ground - a few more plates to make the ground uneven. As a purist I also disagree, if it's possible to make a costumized minifig with existing pieces that's what I will do. Altough it's allowed to make and use non-lego-parts. As an example, a while ago at my lug, for a competion you had to make a costumized, new, non existing collectible minifig. I won. With this Hun, which I made with only lego parts. About the relief, unfortunately I did not have more dark tan plates. I like this. I tried to be as accurate as possible. And because the mounties official hat is tan I used this one! Edited August 17, 2011 by mcdenbesten Quote
tedbeard Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 I tried to be as accurate as possible. And because the mounties official hat is tan I used this one! The stetson was introduced to the official uniform around 1904 (when they became "Royal") and after the Boer War where it had been worn by ex-members serving with Lord Strathcona's Horse and the Canadian Mounted Rifles. A white pith helmet is more historically accurate certainly for the early years of the force. Quote

I used what I saw in Canada(when visiting my family) and the movie, The Mountie as reference. So that's also why I choose a hat instead of the pit helmet. MstrOfPppts Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 I did not mean no offence, I just stated my opinion. For me it's just the idea that counts in your example and of course the possession of certain parts. But the word custom has a bigger meaning for me. I prefer seeing something that has not been produced yet. Some peoples abilities (not my) of sculpting are really awesome and the finished product looks just like LEGO if not sometimes even more detailed. I prefer seeing it the way LEGO would've done it with some new parts ... For example your Hun minifig (which by the way is really cool) for me looks a bit odd knowing that there's a tire in his head. If it was a real collectable minifig LEGO would make a new mold for the hat and you could also sculpt one out of putty (if it was allowed in the competition) and would look better for my taste. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I don't like your work nor ideas for I too am not customizing my LEGO for my MOCs. I don't even use the unofficial accessories ... But in a custom minifig competition where everything is allowed, that's a different story! Quote
tedbeard Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Learned something new then Then my work here is done. I hope BrickForge will be @ BrickCon again this year so I can pick up a bunch of these to go along with some of those guardsman torsos. I need to build the musical ride. Currently I have just the one: Quote
LegoDadRobb Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I think that your mountie looks great. I suppose I am of the camp that prefers to see existing LEGO parts used in innovative ways/combinations rather than a bunch of user-created or 3rd party add-ons. I also enjoyed the stage coach and the mountain edge. Quote
