[SR - FB1] Cannon Factory

Recommended Posts

Freebuild #1 Feb. 2016

Pirates can live and die by their cannons. Good quality fire power is necessary for successful raids.

Building outside.

Roof and walls are removeable to show the inside workplace.

Men are hard at work. It's hot work pouring molten metal into the mold cast.

That's a really nice building. The palisade brick wall technique is as basic as it gets but it looks great, and the removable front and roof are really good. The rows of arched windows are nice despite the gaps at the top. This has a very smooth appearance overall.

The casting process looks interesting. I'm guessing it takes a lot of those small ladles to cast one full barrel! Perhaps they're more efficient than it looks... The trans red bar at the anvil is just about the perfect Lego piece for forging. You have quite a bit going on in a relatively small place. :classic:

But I have to ask... wouldn't proper pirates be more inclined to just steal the durn things from someone else? Casting cannons is hard, hot work!

They need some music to work by... some easy listening... I suggest "Canon in Dee major." :pir-laugh:

Good work.

I love it! Good representation of the casting process. And I like the sliding doors on the building.

Great build showing the cannon manufacturing process! You beat me to it as a cannon foundry is one of my planned builds as well...

They're picking up on the socialist leanings of the DeTaillefer clan...."Through work comes power!" :pir_laugh2:

We Piraat's watch each other's backs......Arrrrgh! (Mostly....) :pir-laugh::pir-devil:

Sweet, looks great.

The first pic (outside shot) is actually my favourite, your really captured that "small factory" look well.

Great build! I really like the Windows, they give things a very factory-like atmosphere!

Take care of your canons, Mardier is lurking!

On the build now, it is a nice hub of metalworking activity and i like the sliding doors and the molding cast!

Thank you all for your kind words. pirate_classic.gif

Thanks. SilentWolf beat me to a blacksmith. I think there will be overlap and similar types of properties given there are 4 fractions and many places to build upon.

"Oh no dey ditn't....!" Yay! Pirate's can haz cannons!

Sounds like a good line for MEME. pirate_wink.gif

Fine, fine - although I always thought that pirates would just steal their cannons!

Stealing is a bit more difficult when most of your fleet was captured on their very first MCRA. pirate_cry4.gif

is perfect. pir_laugh2.gif

A really nice build, and it's always nice to see (reasonably) sober pirates working instead of looting.

It looks like you've included every step in the process, and I like the various equipment and details at each step. I would say that it looks a little too clean for a busy foundry; maybe some junk or bottles on the floor could help.

Very nice! I like the molten metal :classic:

I wonder if trans-neon orange (which glows nicely in UV light) would work as molten/hot metal...?

Nice build, I like how you are depicting the way to mould and build a cannon.

I am hoping we will not face those war weapons too soon during a trade run... pirate_laugh2.gif

Pirates that can't pirate mold cannons for those that can.

Very nice factory, a good concept too and nice demonstration of various stages!

Aye, Sea Rats have a well disciplined tidy crew. It comes with years of swabbing the deck. pirate_wink.gif

That's a great idea. Could be used for the furnance too. :classic:

But that's the fun of MRCA. pirate_laugh2.gif

I've been wondering... is this based on any specific time period? The horizontal mold in particular has piqued my curiosity.

Fantastic modelling. I really like these industrial type builds. Unglamorous but fascinating! Where would all those swanky ship's captains be without the sweat of these guys? Feeding the fishes, that's where. Perhaps you should build the outside yard next? Even more potential for fascinating unglamour (I made that word up)!

I did not realize until today that you had posted this in Rassilon, my city! Very cool! As this is the first property not built by myself in Rassilon, I would like to show my appreciation by gifting you with 5DBs. I'll fill out the necessary paperwork (webform) shortly! This just goes to show, good things happen to those who help Sinbad the Sailor! (Can't promise the same kind of gift to everyone, but I'll remember those who help me build up Rassilon!)

Nothing too specific. Loosely based off pictures I can find on Google images for the 1100-1200 A.D.

Thank you. :classic: I would love to put a propane fork lift outside but it is not age appropriate.

This is awesome!

Thank you. :classic:

Then you did a little research. That's what I was getting at. It seems cannons were cast horizontally until at least the mid-1500s although it varied considerably from place to place. I can't determine when vertical casting was first done but it seemed to have taken over by the late-1500s/early-1600s. I like a researched build. Keep it up. :classic:

As others have said, really nice depiction on the foundry processes - I like the linearity, so to speak - from molten iron to finished gun.

I do think that mold should be more substantial though - to dissipate the heat.

All in all, nice build - although pirates producing their own guns makes me somewhat uneasy! pirate_tong.gif
