The Algus Saga - Help from a Nobleman

In their quest to find ways to fight the Algus, Major Marron and Colonel Upright are allowed to meet Duke Fasel. "Let me do the talking", Upright hissed to Marron. "This is an important audience. This great lord will give us guidance. Don't mess it up." Marron sighed and stayed silent. Upright cleared his throat: "Your highness! Our forces are fighting the terrible Algus. Those icy creatures from the North that have invaded our lands. We are in dire need of support." Duke Fasel looked at them, seemingly gazing at something behind the two men, somewhere in the distance. There was a pause. "This fine leader, this higher being will give us something that will help us crush the Algus", Upright whispered to Major Marron. "Just be quiet. This Duke has higher insights than simple beings like us." Marron sighed and stayed silent. Upright raised his voice again: "Your highness, we, who are not worthy, kindly ask for your help. With all your wisdom, might and courage - grant us help in our battle against the icy deathbringers." Duke Fasel looked at them and then began to speak. Slowly, in a slightly high-pitched voice. "We think that We have something for you that will change your fate in battle." The Duke turned to rummage in a nearby golden chest. "Ah, here they are" "My rabbit gloves. Excellent against the cold. Take them, good man, and win the war for Us. Who was it against, you said?" Marron sighed and stayed silent. In the "Captain Braunsfeld's part of the Algus Saga" you are here: Part 4 1) The Beacon of Bruns Fall 2) Defending the North 3) Southern Comfort 4) Help from a Nobleman 5) Two Minor Victories 6) Water does not stop them! 7) What's that coming over the hill? 8) Where the Rainbow Spell came from 9) AppleCalypse Now!

[MOC] The Feast of the Monkey

Every year around midsummer the islanders of the happy island of Cascara are celebrating the "Feast of the Monkey": The dancing usually lasts five to six hours... ... by then the monkey statues are utterly exhausted... ... and need a rest... (I've tried a new water technique but it does not come out in the pictures... The stuff in the background is an attempt at "forced perspective palm trees") More and large pics here. C&C welcome.
  3. The building in which Samuel Marron and his men had moved (New Home for the City Watch) was fine but a bit gloomy in parts. So it was decided to renovate the City Watch Headquarters. A well-known well-paid architect was called in to oversee the work: Many things needed to be changed... .. but most importantly, Major Marron had to decide how to replace the existing gargoyles. Local craftsmen had prepared several promising suggestions: They were of such high quality that it was very difficult to choose. As you can see in the subsequent MOC (which was posted earlier) Marron made a good decision (The Algus Saga: The Beacon of Bruns Fall) C&C welcome.
  4. The renovation of the city watch headquarters has been completed: As for the gargoyles, classic dino/dragon design had been chosen. Major Marron and the architect: The basement (once a wine cellar) now consists of prison cells: Thanks for watching!

The Algus Saga - Southern Comfort

Consolation for Mitgardia came from the South - battle-hardened Mounted Ostrich Archers were sent North by the Desert King by mediation of Captain Marron. Marron had been at the victory parade in Kaliphlin and had used the opportunity to connect to the Desert King and his generals. So, after having defended the northern walls, Marron personally welcomed the first MOA battalion that arrived in Mitgardia. Of course, some Northern support was necessary to make the allies successful: Warm clothes... ... and warm, black leathered boots. .. gloves and coats... ... well, the ostriches were sent back to Kaliphlin. And another surprise was waiting for Captain Marron: he was promoted to Major! Major Marron gathered his men and returned to the northern front to face the Algus again. C&C welcome. In the "Captain Braunsfeld's part of the Algus Saga" you are here: Part 3 1) The Beacon of Bruns Fall 2) Defending the North 3) Southern Comfort 4) Help from a Nobleman 5) Two Minor Victories 6) Water does not stop them! 7) What's that coming over the hill? 8) Where the Rainbow Spell came from 9) AppleCalypse Now!
  6. After the overwhelming victory, a grand Flag Parade was held at Sultan's Gate - with guests from all parts of the world. The victorious troops marched by His Majesty, flowers covering the ground. General Ra and the famous Mounted Ostrich Archers (the Desert King's elite forces) led the parade. ... followed by Al Giwemm Fahia who carefully demonstrated his Staff of Flames as he crossed the Blue Water Bridge - just behind him the famous sorceress Kleotete: Lady Phlici, now engaged, could be spotted amongst the spectators next to another general. The First Mummy Warriors Corps were carrying blue flowers from Petraea, well almost all of them... The crowd was excited and cheerful: The Flying Carpet Corps had their big moment too: Musicians played tunes that were written especially for the occasion... .. .and a splendid time was guaranteed for all. C&C welcome. This is the largest set (128x32) I have build in this challenge and it was difficult enough to take decent pictures. I hope they worked out well in their smaller format. I have tried to include bits and pieces from all previous MOCs in the scene. You may also want to find out how many monkeys and how many jugglers are included . Or animals...

The Algus Saga - Defending the North

How the North was defended: Captain Marron and his men had rushed to a newly built part of the "Northern Wall" that was supposed to protect Mitgardia from the Algus. The vicious Algus attacked the walls relentlessly. Luckily it was already obvious that they did not like the combination of oil and fire very much: It would push them back - but it still would not suffice to ultimately defeat them... (end of this part of the story) Shot from the backside. Here you can see that Steen Larsson was also there to help... More (and larger pictures) to find in the corresponding flickr album. C&C welcome (and: yes, it is a pun on "how the west was won") In the "Captain Braunsfeld's part of the Algus Saga" you are here: Part 2 1) The Beacon of Bruns Fall 2) Defending the North 3) Southern Comfort 4) Help from a Nobleman 5) Two Minor Victories 6) Water does not stop them! 7) What's that coming over the hill? 8) Where the Rainbow Spell came from 9) AppleCalypse Now!
  8. In the city of Bruns Fall - on the west coast of Mitgardia - Captain Samuel Marron was worried: Beacons had been lit. Something was going to happen, most likely something bad. He rushed to the roof of the New Watch to lit Bruns Falls' beacon. The weather had been mild so far with just a bit of snow. But Samuel had the feeling that a coldness would come in from the North. Maybe a coldness worse than ice and snow. He watched the fire burn and the smoke going up in the sky. Little did he know what would lie ahead. Developer's note: I have added Bruns Fall where I would like to see it on the map. That may not be the standard process for getting a new city but I have no idea what that process would be. And I realize that I don't know which font you are using. Feedback to process and font is welcome! In the "Captain Braunsfeld's part of the Algus Saga" you are here: Part 1 1) The Beacon of Bruns Fall 2) Defending the North 3) Southern Comfort 4) Help from a Nobleman 5) Two Minor Victories 6) Water does not stop them! 7) What's that coming over the hill? 8) Where the Rainbow Spell came from 9) AppleCalypse Now!
  9. After Ra'sh Fforh Whord had taken the Desert King's shilling and had joined the Mounted Ostrich Archers (MOA) TM - the Desert King's elite forces - life was not so easy for him: Riding an ostrich was a difficult thing to do... requiring a lot of training lessons... His first major task in the Kaliphlin Civil War was to guard a very important piece of the desert: ... he did reasonably well. Then Ra'sh's military career started to blossom. He became the best archer of the MOATM and received a prize, that was given to him by General Ra himself. The precious moment was captured on canvas: Later that day, a Ulandus spy was captured with the help of the painter - but that is a different story to be told on a different occasion. The civil war raged on. Ra'sh was freeing prisoners of war... ... and he was there when they stormed Xersia and Petraea (Ra'sh was highly impressed by the city's archicture) ... After the war had ended Ra'sh left the army highly decorated and with all the pay he had been saving throughout the time. He proposed to the King's Sorceress Nofrepatra and they got married. With their savings they opened up a carpet trader shop (The "Rug'N'Roll") in Petraea, thus continuing the business his father had started long ago. Ra'sh took a liking to dressing in light green, his wife kept her infamous sorceress wardrobe. Many friends from the times of the war came by to buy one of his precious carpets - the finest ones in all of Kaliphlin. Ra'sh was happy to see his old sergeant again. They all lived happily ever after. This closes the story of Ra'sh Fforh Whord and the Kaliphlin Civil war. (I've been using 3 MOCs from CAT C together with 3 new ones). @Ska: If you need to pick one pic for the voting, pls take the first one with the rug shop on it. C&C welcome!
  10. Ra'sh Fforh Whord had grown up from a boy to a young man. He found that the village he was living in did not offer much to him His father kept saying that it was not time to make a change, he should take things slowly. But Ra'sh was determined and he knew in his heart that adventure lay in store for him. But how could he try to explain? When one day a troop of Mounted Ostrich Archers came into his village to seek for young recruits, he jumped for the opportunity. His father was sceptical, his mother unsure of what the future would bring, when Ra'sh took the Desert King's Shilling to become a Mounted Ostrich Archer. And you could hear them singing: Left a good job in the city Workin' for the man every night and day I never lost one minute of sleeping Worryin' about the way things might have been We are strong and we are cunning Ostriches keep on running Running, running, running through the desert Gladly he accepted the Desert King's shilling. Little did Ra'sh know what would lie ahead of him. His little sister wondered what a mighty warrior Ra'sh might become. (I was asked to highlight the following detail:) Ra'sh left his home town - would he ever come back to his home and family? Later that day, a High Council spy was found and captured in the village. But that was another story to be told on a different day. C&C welcome.
  11. ... a noisy parade had sneaked into the city, only to run into an unexpected halt. Nelly Wilson, the grand old man of the Kaliphlin musicians guild, stepped forward, accompanied by soldiers. "May I see your Musicians Guild Membership Cards", he demanded. The intruders collapsed in dismay. The MGMCs... they had forgotten to forge them. All their plans, all their preparation now in vain... Soon, they ended up in prison. Nelly Wilson was not the man to mess with. He never knew that he had in fact prevented a terrorist attack... This is a counter on B12 against Garmadon's GA.
  12. "The Day the Music Died" The moment delegates from different parts of Kaliphlin were arriving with specialties for the gala diner, a group of terrorists had stormed forward shouting something like "Four You Land Us" and "Four Kai and Flin", which nobody understood. These armed lunatics had to be taken care of. The Desert King's sorceresses acted swiftly and ruthlessly. Cleotete created a shining blue shield of protection around the king while killing the first assassin with magical fire. Simultaneously Nofrepatra, the enchantress, stopped an attacker with a frightening blast of blue magical power. Al Giwemm Fahia appeared with his famous three-prong staff of flames and set the third assassin's crossbow on fire. Within a second an Ostrich Archer took care of the evil dwarf. The malicious plan had failed. Let's hear it for Al Giwemm Fahia... and Cleotete... as well as Nofrepatra and the brave Ostrich Archer The hideous assassin fell from the wall to his death soon after this magical picture had been taken: The guests arriving: This is a counter attack to [GA:B12 U vs. DK] The orchestra of Sultan's Gate @marcu22: Nice building style!

    [WZ18] The Fall of Eastgate

The Desert King has taken Eastgate! After a combined attack (unique in Kaliphlin's history) of air, ground and naval forces, the city has surrendered. The ground forces (supported by heavy catapults and ballista) were attacking from the North, breaking out of the Witherwoods. DK ships came from the sea and attacked the city where the red river waters mingle with the clear blue water coming in from the ocean. Finally the bombardment carried out by the Royal Flying Carpet Corps (RFCC) broke the resistance of the defenders. This is the aerial perspective: The "Guardian" took severe damage: Most of the city was saved from ruin as the attack had been quick and swift. Victory once more fell to the Desert King! C&C welcome.

[GA, E4, DK vs. HC] Offering Help

The Desert King's troops are offering help to the people who have been left alone by the High Council. They bring food the people in need and are demonstrating, once more, the benevolence of the Desert King: Of course, HC agents claim that everything is poisoned, but ordinary men and women cannot be fooled that easily. Everyone is happy. Monkeys are happy too. (I'm switching to blue background - looks nicer in combination with tan.)

[WZ16 - DK] I Want To Hold Your Hand

MAGE NETWORK NEWSFLASH! Lady Phlici engaged to Desert King Ambassador! Sands End is surprised and happy about this news! Read all about it! Yesterday, an official meeting with the ambassadors of the Ulandus, High Council and the Desert King took place in Sands End - accompanied by fine musicians. Lat’ve, the Ulandus ambassador, had been in the city for a while, trying to win Lady Phlici's heart. Hinz, the unshaven, ambassador for the High Council managed to arrive just in time, his attire slightly deranged by the plight of the voyage. Apparently, Lady Phlici was shocked by his appearence. See Lady Phlici being shocked: Luckily, the Desert King's ambassador was there to save the day. It soon became clear that Lady Phlici only had eyes for the DK ambassador. No big wonder though. The elderly High Council guy, hungry from his journey, was more interested in cake anyway. And Lat've, having been unable to get closer to Lady Phlici for weeks, took a fancy to the wine that was offered on the occasion. And so Lady Phlici fell in love with the charming young man from the desert - and she happily accepted his proposal. While Hinz was working his way through the cake... ... and Lat've was drunk and fast asleep. What a happy ending for Lady Phlici and Sands End! Here you can see both 16x8 MOCs side by side: I keep wondering where I've seen the face of the DK's ambassador before... (Not much space to do huge stories on 8x16 when you have to depict four different parties...) C&C welcome.
  16. A little view inside life in Mitgardia while fierce fighting is going on in Kaliphlin... Unbenownst to most men in Mitgardia, coin minting is a core domain of the Mitgardian dwarves. And, before I forget it, I would like to claim UoP credits for: Trade and Law manufacturing Anthropology city scene Now, let us get back to the dwarves: Stage 1: melting of gold: Stage 2: gold is hammered into shape - using modern mechanics. Stage 3: gold is placed upon a belt Stage 4: the actual minting The finished coins are then assembled. Thanks for watching. C&C welcome.
  17. Hooray! Desert King troops have managed to destroy the source of power of the First Centurion! In a fierce battle the defenders were defeated: A large part of the battle raged in the garden of the Celestial Palace: The brave DK fighters (supported by Mounted Ostrich Bowmen) were excited about their victory. The defenders (dis-)appeared in the usual way... Key to the victory was ... ... the Desert King's fire mage ... ... who destroyed the artefact of the First Centurion with his magic flame thrower . The magic monument, that had been beaming with yellow thaumaturgical energy, came crashing down in flames. When its magic died, a loud, unearthly scream was heard through the gardens of the palace... C&C welcome.

[GA: D2, DK] We did start the fire...

The much-feared Mounted Ostrich Archers have struck again! This oil pump will not be working any longer! Glory to the Desert King! This guerilla attack was brought to you by Captain Braunsfeld. C&C welcome!

[GA: DK vs. HC, B3] Set Them Free

A small troop of DK Mounted Ostrich Bowmen were able to ambush High Council troops that were guarding prisoners of war: The prisoners - rarely-seen monkey-ish beings from some stranger parts of Kaliphlin - were released and happy! The surprise of the HC men was so complete that no fighting was necessary. View from above: (... and this time I did not forget the palm tree...) ... another week, another GA made and the world goes round .... C&C welcome!

    [WZ10;DK] Taking Petraea by Storm

Mage Network Newsflash! Desert King troops have won the battle of Petraea and have marched into the city. See it all in your nearest magical orb! Our "News Mage" is directly reporting from the south gate of Petraea, near the famous Temple of Poh'Sai'Dhonn, where Desert King troops are advancing as we speak: We are standing in front of the famous twin stairs of the Temple of Poh'Sai'Dhonn which are paved with pure gold! Man, this city is gloriously rich! But the fleeing defenders have no time to stare at the beauty of the city... The victorious troops are more than happy to take a look while more and more Desert King soldiers are filing through the famous gates. (On the very left: famous Mounted Ostrich Archers (MOA)) So this is all pretty much settled here, no surprises to be expected. And the Desert King wins this exciting match in the second half. (Note: Blue sky background is not meant to be part of the MOC.) C&C welcome!
  21. Having build a watch tower directly on the oil road, brave Desert King soldiers were able to defeat a non-surprise attack by Ulandus troops: Oil kept flowing throughout the skirmish... And the overview showing where the tower was built on the road: Thanks for looking! If I should win, I chose H6.

    [WZ6:B7] Diversion and Defeat

The siege of Northwall took a surprising turn when Desert King forces managed to create a diversion that allowed DK forces to enter the city: Fatima the belly dancer was dancing so delightfully in the light of the evening sun that the guards could not resists and moved closer to watch her. And what a beauty she was! Unnoticed by the guards, mummy warriors rose from the sand and entered through the open city side gate. The happiness on the guards' faces was soon washed away... .. by midnight the city had fallen. I would like to receive UoP credit for: Architecture - wall techniques

    [MOC] Enterprise (second try)

Following the creation of the first version of the USS Enterprise I have modified the MOC some time later (also some time ago): As you can see I have changed the overall structure to reduce the mechanical strain on the different parts. Of course, the drives are now less spectacular... The crew is happy nevertheless. .. that is how the ship is structured. It is possible to separate the ship in two parts. C&C welcome! Live long and prosper!
