Steve has had enough of pirates, he now sails the fastest vessel around in the hopes of never having to deal with pirates anymore...

The Revenant was collaboratively built by me and @Legostone in a very short timeframe. Let me know if you like her.

Steve himself! Still the nicest pirate-themed torso ever to be if you ask me.

The hull is constructed in similar fashion to my earlier sloop, The Raven, sitting low to embrace the agile profile of a fast-looking vessel. This however limited the possibilities to include inward tumblehome. Neverthess, its absence is acceptable on a vessel that sits this low.

She's equiped with four 6-pounders although they have little use sailing at half wind due to being positioned so close to the waterline. Four swivelguns, mounted on the railing at the quarter deck, proove to be more effective on a ship like this.

Cargo space is limited since she is built for speed. No pirate will ever catch up to her however.

That is a very beautiful ship! :pir-huzzah2:  Is it a schooner? I really like how the quarterdeck above the ship's stern narrows towards the rear. The ship bow with the figurehead looks good. The masts, sails and rigging are excellently constructed. There are 4 cannons and 4 swivel guns for defence. Additionally, it has 2 cannon ports without cannons to prevent pirates. This makes the ship lighter and faster, but gives the impression that there are more cannons. Steve rightly laughs about sailing on such a good and fast ship.

Thank you, reminds me that I could add some more information on the ships arnament and features 😅.

I like how you secured the sails and the shape of you ship is very nicely done. I’m not sure how I feel about seeing Steve without facial hair, but I can definitely tell it’s him. The cannons are cool looking and the steering mechanism is good too, my only critique is I kinda wish the helm was a bit bigger and had an old style wheel for steering, but it’s not necessary. Great build Matey :pir-triumph:

Thank you,

In the age of sail, schooners like this typically didn't have steering wheels, those were reserved for large battle ships which required pulley-assisted systems for the greater force it took to turn the rudder :pir-classic:.

Nevertheless, these are often wrongly depicted in movies and fanart so I understand the appeal.

Fun little tub. I'd be tempted to raise the deck a little, move the canons above the waterline...

A wonderful little vessel, with brilliant sails and attention to detail (like the fact that you aren't using a steering wheel for such a small ship) as well as the blue water splashes on a darker "ocean" all contribute to one of the best ship entries to date!

I do, however, have to make a few critiques. The cannons look great, and it's the first time I see that particular part choice for the barrel, but I feel like the crew is comically small for such an arsenal ; you need at least 4 crew to man a 2-cannon-broadside plus a pilot, and ideally a few more. The fact that you focused so much on accuracy for the build only makes it that much more disappointing to see you didn't think of proper crew amounts.

I'd have also liked if there was a better spread for the swivel guns ; there's 4 at the back and none at the front, leaving the ship vulnerable to frontal assault! I think that simply moving 2 of those to the front would fix the issue.

I know my critique is long, but it's only because I feel like such a large ship deserves to be at its best when voting starts. Best of luck!

What is a quite a fine effort for a very short timeframe - but who gets the prize if you win?

  • Wonderful build! It's not a type of ship that I've seen much of before, but it looks great. Well done with the NPU.

2 more crewmembers are asleep in the cabin ;) No need for defense at the front if you have the fastest ship around and can escape swiftly :D

Aye, it's impressive!

Now let's see if you can put together a few small entries in less than 48 hours... :pir-grin:

Arguably, but if you are caught in a misty environment or are going around a rock and an enemy ship is right in front of you, speed won't help you much.

Indeed, "speed as a suit of armour" was a thing the british loved to do, they called those ships battlecruisers, you can look up the battle of jutland if you want to see how that ended up...

Haha, I try not concern myself with that scenario until it befalls upon us :pir-laugh:. Those who engage in piracy together should be able to share the loot I imagine

This is turning into an interesting discussion :pir-laugh:. In my mind we didn't want to clutter the already crowded bow with more clutter, aka; swivel guns. Although I agree that, from a practical point of view, it would make sense to have at least some form of armament to challenge foes from the front.

I intend to do some modifications on this vessel for sure, I have not identified all of them yet, I usually need a couple of days/weeks to decide on what I want and how I want to do it. But I'll be sure to add more members to the crew :pir-classic:.

@Sebeus I, good to know the conversation is interesting to you! I understand the points you are making, and for a Lego contest build it is more than acceptable to keep it as is. But, in the spirit of this competiton, I chose to give a few nitpicks, to help you improve it some more.

What a pretty little vessel, crammed with great details. The guns are novel, I like the little stairs/ladders, and the brown thread gives a unique effect compared with the more common black. The black table and 'impressionist' sea frame it nicely. Not sure about the red belaying pins though, perhaps dark brown would be less obtrusive?

Ahoy Mateys @Sebeus I and @Legostone!

They call me Captain Crit in these parts and I heard that polly wants a sandwich (They’re fed up with crackers apparently) - a criticism sandwich that is! (For you landlubbers, that’s 3 seas [Cs]- Compliment, Constructive Criticism, and another Compliment) [I know the contest is officially over and voting has begun, but I’ve been busy of late and didn’t get to post crits of all the last builds so I’m just starting now]

Ye and yer mate did a great job buildin’ this! Yer text seems to imply that Steve was a pirate and is now a merchant…what an interesting twist! From merchant, to pirate, back to merchant!

This built is quite good indeed and it was real hard for me to come up with a critique. The only wee thing I can think of off the top o’ my head is that perhaps you would need some barrels or crates on deck to store the powder or cannonballs for the cannons.

Me favorite part of this build is all the details. From the brilliant little cannons to the figurehead everything was thought out. Gold details, anchor, cannon flaps, cargo below, rudder, lamp- everything is thought of! I also really like the blue tiles, especially in the first photo-they represent the water quite well. Great work!

Fair Winds Matey!

Great ship, and it seems like all the details are masterfully placed with intention. No filler. Everything feels like it belongs and it is all very cohesive. Rigging and sails are wonderful as well!

This is good inspiration! I hope to create more ships and builds like this are good motivation to revise and learn new techniques.
