[OL - Ch 1A] Native Outrigger Canoe

Native Outrigger Canoe

This is my Challenge I category A entry.

In the waters around the newly discovered islands there are already some smaller crafts sailing. One common type of vessel is the outrigger canoe, used by the natives for fishing and for travelling between the islands. A number of sightings of these craft have been reported by the early explorers of Oleon. So far the natives seems peaceful…

I'm always fascinated by custom hulls, and this build is no exception. This looks just like I would expect a small native craft to appear. The use of brown and tan for the hull strikes me as odd, but perhaps the natives have some reason for it pirate_classic.gif.

Nice layout. Not so nice look on the face of the male. Has he been in fight, or have his female friend put him in his place?

Nice outrigger! I really like how you shaped it and the hull colors make it look like a mix of wood and bamboo...

Probably the best challenge entry untill now. The sail is really good, the water is really good, the boat is really good, the two outrigs are really good... Everything is really cool!

Really nice outrigger, Gideon - the sail is very well posed, and it looks very dynamic. I wonder, though, how that (obviously very concentrated, by the look on his face) fisherman is handling the net, while the canoe is sailing, and why there is absolutely no lean to the canoe? pirate_wink.gif

While the first might be case of trawling, the latter seems more like an issue... pirate_laugh2.gif I'd suggest giving the whole canoe some lean as induced by the sail pressure. As little as one or to plates in height difference between left and right outrigger mught be sufficient to make it even more dynamic and natural. pirate_satisfied.gif

Excellent outrigger Gideon, great use of that sail, and the water is really lovely as well! thumbup.gif The polished look of the build overall is very nice too, although I do agree with Bregir that a slight tilt of the canoe would improve it pirate_wink.gif

Indexed as a Class 0 Native vessel!

Excellent entry Gideon!!! I am making a small rigged canoe myself, so this is great inspiration :)

Lovely canoe. The hull is beautifully sculpted and I like the tan line for some reason. Those outriggers are pretty neat as well. The sail is just about perfect for this type of thing. As previously suggested, I think some tilting/listing of the whole thing would produce a better overall presentation, but you might have to make some modifications to that superb water to do it.

Showing the natives fishing is a natural idea and makes good use of that net piece. They obviously have a particular disdain for clothing. Perhaps you and your fellow Oleanders can enlighten them if and when you interact.

Quintessential Gideon - neat, tidy, smooth, and of course welll built and photographed. Keep it up.

Very nice job, that water looks really cool and refreshing and the outrigger of course is great! Good choice of sail and I like the dark tan stripe - add some great color variety!

Thanks for the kind words and even more thanks for the constructive feedback on my first sailing MOC ever! :classic:

I realized already when building it that maybe it should lean a bit, but I wanted to make the impression that it was only slighthly moving since they were fishing (probably the bow wave and the bulge in the sail are too big however). And more importantly, the canoe's bottom was only resting on the water tiles

The reason for the dark tan part was because I only had the right curved slopes in reddish brown for the upper part and didn't bother ordering more from BL, so the solution was to try to make it look like the lower part of the canoe was made from some other material.

I like the boat a lot. I like that it presents some normal scene, not a special event, just everyday.

And I love this water - how do you make it look THAT good?
