Train MOC parts?

Sorry if this has been covered somewhere, but I couldn't find recent information about it in the sticky or a search.

I've dug into Pick-a-Brick and can't seem to find the buffer/coupler parts or the parts for a standard unpowered bogie. Is there a guide somewhere about what parts one needs to make bogies and so on? I've looked at LDD, but the part numbers there don't seem to work in PAB.

Hi StephenTrains, welcome to Eurobricks! Good that you ask, it is indeed not wise to buy larger amounts from PaB. You could also participate in a LEGO fan group (like eurobricks, but we don't do that yet since we have members that are so widespread) that gets the privilege from LEGO to buy in bulk once a year (e.g. 1000steine / BeLUG, etc). One needs to have patience, but I have e.g. a whole lot of train wheels, track, train base plates, etc. from a previous round (we can't sell it though, that is prohibited and there are more rules, like even if you are member of more clubs you can only take part once a year in total, you cannot talk about the prices, only in a members-only forum, etc). Next round will be end of the year.

Once you've got the hang of Bricklink, it's really useful. I've built a few things and got a lot of odds n sods from there, and apart from the odd missing piece (which is always sent out post haste as soon as you email the seller) I've never had a problem. Totally recommend it.

Thanks guys - I had looked at BrickLink but found it a bit overwhelming.

My plan now is to use LDD as a reference for parts, and then buy them from Bricklink.

you can use LDD manager to import the parts in to a bricklink wanted list.

Then you can use brickficiency to find the best prices for your wanted parts lists.

You can also download PDF instructions of recent train sets from LEGO.com like 7938, 60052, etc. They'll show you how the unpowered boogies are assembled. PAB has train wheels and holders but not the steel axles.

Thank-you so much, after reading the post and downloading the software, I was able to figure everything out.

I now have a new 'Saved Wanted list', for my next building project.

This programming will save me lots of time, a few clicks and a new list is generated.

Now I need more time for building..........

now here is a final piece of the puzzle,

you can use brickficiency to search all the stores for the cheapest parts. you may need to make a few runs, changing the store counts and so on but you will get the hang of it.

In addition to garethjellis, there are also these wheels that can make use of the technic axles and can be driven by motors and gears.

Are you talking about the online Pick-A-Brick? They're there, under "Transportation", listed as "Prepack Flat With 2 Axles".

I was looking it up by the LEGO ID number printed on the box, and had no idea what to call it.
