I've been trying to partly change the colour of a Lego piece, the cheerleader hairpiece to be exact, but I don't really know how. so far I've tried sharpie but it starts rubbing off after a few days. I want to change the colour of the piece to red, but I want to leave the front/fringe the original colour.

Any techniques would be appreciated, even ones I wouldn't be able to try at this point in time.

I've found automotive vinyl paint works well. I used it to change the scabbard colour to red on my avatar figure and it hasn't come off with a bit of inserting and removing the sword.

When I was doing a little decal work I also got a clear acrylic spray to seal the decals. If I paint something I normally spray a thin coat of the acrylic spray and that seals it.... for good!

After the Sharpie ink has dried, give it a coat of Humbrol satin. The coat is invisible and the same shininess as LEGO. I tested it on a spare piece and it's more permanent than LEGO print.

The ears on these pieces were recoloured using the Sharpie/Humbrol method:
