458 spider is my favorite but there all great, 458 MOC has little gaps in the body work and the curves flow nicely.

I would strongly guess that this was intentional. Part of TLG's recent strategy of making Technic usable by younger audiences has been color coding. For example, pins and axles come in specific colors. Most modern sets avoid similar parts in the same color. For example, they won't put 5L beams and 7L beams in the same color in the same set. They make them different colors so the builder doesn't confuse them. I bet they made the #3 connectors a different color than the #5 connectors on purpose so builders wouldn't confuse them. Sadly, this strategy has a negative impact on the appearance of a model.

Yeah, I noticed this colour coding for some beams as well. For pins and stuff I can understand it, if only for an ease of sorting stuff later in less sorting boxes, but to be honest, if kids can't see or learn the difference in 2L then I don't have high hopes for the future. Also, yesterday I was building my new EV3RSTORM and 5L axles were in the same bag as 7L axles, wouldn't this have to freak out kids too then?

Would definitely look better with red ones... Maybe they had a ton of #3 LBG connectors that they had to get rid of... Could be the same situatiuon as this strange one here from a few years ago... The LBG smooth toggle connectors look completely out of place on the 8081 model...

That is probably it. Black toggle joints probably didn't see some good production until the 9398 and 9395 hit the shelves.

This is a beautiful thread. I have been contemplating getting the parts for one of these well known MOC supercars, but i honestly don't like the red, at all. These pictures do make them look awesome, though.

I think, eventually, i will build Sheepo's Mustang in white, or maybe yellow. That is, of course, if the parts are actually available in those colors.

Kinda tooting my own custom colour horn here, but a white Mustang is possible, but you will have to adjust a few parts on the car.

Yellow might be a bit harder, especially 11L soft axles are very rare on bricklink. And #4 connectors don't come cheap either. Which I find kind of funny that they have only been in 1 set, considering how much yellow vehicles Technic Lego has

Is it me or does the front 'windshield' look really odd in that render? It looks almost 'squashed'.

I built this model and the front windshield is a tad bit flat IMO.
