Redimus Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 I seem to be trying out a lot of random and disparate bits n bobs n ideas right now, and rather than cluttering up the forum with each new idea, I thought I'd post em all in a specific thread. -------------------- Continuing from the Mk1 MOC I posted in this thread, I finished the design, although by the time I had done that, I had already decided that, as much as I like it, I won't be building it for a good while. It's far too big for my very limited layout (neither the space, nor resources for smooth curves at the moment), and to be honest, the one steam loco I currently have is not of a standard, nor really in the same scale, to go with it. So, I still have a steam loco, and only modern era freight stock for it to pull, so what to do? I decided to settle for a 6 stud wide Mk1 inspired design that is a lot closer to normal Lego lengths (I still slightly lengthened the larger standard train base), which I have dubbed the Mk0.5... :P As well as being shorter, thinner and flat of profile, it's also considerably less detailed, with features largely inspired by the same playability (and in the case of the doors, building practice) of the Creator Horizon Express (aka TGV). It's mainly intended as a quick train builder so I have something to play with while I design better more detailed rolling stock and locos. There are currently 4 different types: Mk0.5 Full 1st. Mk0.5 Buffet 1st. Mk0.5 Full Std. Mk0.5 Std Brake. ...And finally, a quick image of the full rake behind a rather out of date version of my Mongrel Mogul! At some point I'll post photos of the now basically complete loco, but for now, I think I've filled the net with enough nonsense! Quote
ronenson Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I really like the design, and especially the combination of dark red and yellow stripe. There's one issue however when you want to actually build it: the train windows are not available in dark red. Quote
Redimus Posted May 25, 2014 Author Posted May 25, 2014 Well bugger, lol. I'll probably resort to the 'blood and custard' (red and cream in real life, probably red and white in Lego) colour scheme then. Quote
militaryfreak Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 The engine looks like thomas the tank engine. Quote
zephyr1934 Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 I still really like the full scale car, but yes, it probably would look horrible on a standard lego curve. The 0.5 versions look to be a really great lego scale car. Seeing the whole set together looks great. It strikes me as a UK version of the super chief cars (which are among my favorite lego sets). Looking good Quote
Redimus Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 It's a shame Lego haven't made any Dark Red window frames. I toyed with the using full panel windows, but it looked far too modern, so I have gone for the earlier livery of 'Blood and Custard' (red and cream), and then had to compromise again and go for white and red, because although cream windows do exist, and over £5 a frame, that'd make a whole train *far* too expensive... Anyway, I've ordered the bits for my first coach (the brake coach), so hopefully should have that constructed in a couple of weeks. Also holding off putting pics of the completed loco until I have enough track to make part of my layout 9v capable, at which point I'm gonna rebuild the tender to make it a little shorter. It looks fine at the moment, but British engines of that size normally didn't have such large tenders. Quote
Redimus Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) New stuff! First off, the completed first iteration of the 2-6-0: (Picture links to my Brickshelf folder for this engine,) She's stil la bit of a work in progress, there's a few bits missing and a few changes a want to make. The biggest change will be when I have enough 9v track for a complete loop of my current set up, O'm not happy with how high the tender is, so I'm gonna knock at least one row off it and go 9v track powered. I also mean to get some nice connecting rods at some point too and experiment with different types of cylinders. Edited June 4, 2014 by Redimus Quote
Redimus Posted August 9, 2014 Author Posted August 9, 2014 (edited) Well I'm halfway to completing a full rake of my Mk 0.5s (photos eventually), but I've already decided to go on to the next project (because I fancied designing something). I'm a great admirer of youtube user 's Lego locos but I am nowhere near ready to try his level of detail. I also rather like his Pullmans, and that is something I feel I can tackle. So having taken a lot of inspiration both from his own ideas and many others I found on google (both for Pullman coaches and other ideas used on coaches), plus use my own imposed limitations (same basic size (especially height and width) as the rest of my stock), and here's the result! I'm rather happy with it, but I need to build one before I know if it's solid enough (had a lot of trouble getting the 5 wide SNOT door sections securely connected with the 6 wide everything else).Couple of quick notes, there will be a tube on each side to act as the underframes which isn't show, and the turntables and clear tiles are intended to sit in the door and toilet cavities. Like my Mk 0.5s, the coach contains roughly half a real coach (the way I built the toilet sections, plus my wish to have the tables line up with the windows without the length being too much longer than the Mk 0.5s made that pretty much a given). I'm a bit disapointed I couldn't make it more symmetrically laid out, but unfortunately the limitations I put on the build meant that was how it has to be. In other news, I've pretty much finished my modifications on Horizon Express, so I should really show that off too. Edited August 9, 2014 by Redimus Quote
Rail Co Posted August 10, 2014 Posted August 10, 2014 Love the engine and the style of boiler! The train cars look good. Keep up the good work -RailCo Quote
Redimus Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 Couple of break van experiments: Light grey one is a generic BR brakevan (would be the more common brown, but the brackets used to connect the ends to the sides don't come in that colour) and the dark grey with red ends one is a generic Southern Railway brakevan. Both use the same basic build, with slight alterations on the ends, sides and footboards (the tiles on the track next to the SR one are intended to fit in between the wheels in the 4 modified tiles). I originally intended them to be 7 wide, but they've ended up 8 wide, and with the rest of my current stock still being only 6 wide, I think this renders them too wide to actually build yet, although I may look into either narrowing them, or creating a full steam era train of stock then starting to build them. Quote
Redimus Posted August 16, 2014 Author Posted August 16, 2014 Wasn't entirely happy with the first attempt, so have cut a stud in width of the upper section, and brought in the footboard for the SR brakevan (the BR one would need a complete redesign to move the footboards in). Overall, I think it's an improvement, I think once I've finished building coaches, this'll form the start of a 7-wide steam era freight set. This means I may need to consider updating my other MOCs to 7 wide too, but for now, I'll just stick with a mix of 6 and 7 wide. Quote
