Ardelon Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 (edited) I put them studs up, as it adds volume and texture. Studs down makes them seem too flat and smooth and thus "fake". But mixing them seems like a nice idea for variety. Just out of curiosity when putting them together do people prefer to have all three stems with the same colour flower, or do you like me try and put a different colour on each stem? As a kid I mostly put the same color on all threee stems, as I saw the stem piece as being one plant and it made sense to me that one plant would have same color flowers. As I grew older, I stopped caring and went for what looks best to me. Edited May 28, 2014 by Ardelon Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I don't think I ever used flowers in my MOCs, but I remember all my instructions having them studs up, so that's the right way for me. Back then when the flowers were introduced the SNOT techniques were not yet popular ... :) Quote
dr_spock Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Just out of curiosity when putting them together do people prefer to have all three stems with the same colour flower, or do you like me try and put a different colour on each stem? I have all identical colors on 3 stems unless I don't have enough, then I mix. I try to avoid that. Quote
Redhead1982 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 When I came back from the dark ages, I always put flowers on the stems with the stud down - obviously the unofficial way. Later I learned from the instructions the right way, which seemed strange, however, I got used to it, so now I practically don't pay attention to flower orientation. Both ways are fine. Quote
Yooha Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 What a serious debate! I am a proud member of the Studs Down Club! But some of my best freinds are doing it with the studs up, so I accept that policy as well. Quote
Poisso3 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I feel like this is the early days of the Butter Battle Book.... To start, I hate those flowers...well, mostly the stem they are placed on. Something about the ones in the newer sets that just don't stay on a stud. With that said, I put the flowers stud side up. Stud side down just looks odd... Quote
mrfuture Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I always use the flower with stud down. But recently learned it also was another way. I think it is what's look best in the model you make Quote
Csacsa234 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Oh my God I never noticed it in the Eurobricks banner! I always put it up with the stud down, Oh somebody is knocking. 'Excuse me Sir do you have a moment to talk about our Lord Flowerstudsup?' It's a trap! Quote
Walter Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 This reminds me of the lightsaber piece. I knew people who would attach it to the blade on either side. I never did remember which way was right. As for the flowers though, I would always do them studs facing up. It just seems more LEGO-y that way. Quote
alois Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 This reminds me of the lightsaber piece. I knew people who would attach it to the blade on either side. I never did remember which way was right. It reminds me of the direction of the minifig hands. They're upside down on the Eurobricks Town section banner. Quote
Rick Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 It reminds me of the direction of the minifig hands. They're upside down on the Eurobricks Town section banner. It's only the guy's hand, but you're right, that's just wrong. Quote
lightningtiger Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 At Bricktopia Ryan McNaught gave a speech.....funny this topic was in that.......he said Lego designers were doing studs down, but it will soon be studs up. Quote
Bamos Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I always do studs up so I can add a round stud to add some more color . Quote
whydoris Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I always do studs up so I can add a round stud to add some more color . I like that idea - but I have to admit I belong to the stud down club. Quote

rob-cubed Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Both! The variety looks more natural. As an avid gardener (about all I've been doing every weekend for a month now) stud-up looks mature and stud-down looks like a flower that's just opened. Mix them up! I really appreciate the various flower styles included in Friends and Belville sets and wish they'd use them in "non-girly" sets. I'm dying to have a tulip flower mold. LEGO, you listening!?! Quote
pbat Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 The first sets to ever contain flowers seem to be 276, 277 and 296 of 1977 and 205, 230, 231, 232, 376, 1589 and 1620 of 1978: All the images show the flowers stud up. So I guess originally that's the right way to use those flowers. But I guess this question is similiar to the question how to properly orientate toilet paper: Over or under? Bearing that in mind, I wonder if there is a connection between prefering the flower stud up and toilet paper over: Might be an interesting topic for a thesis... Quote
jluck Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Studs up for sure. I'd also add i will mix 3 different flowers on one stem, or all 3 the same. But never, ever, EVER do I do 2 of one color and a 3rd one being a different color. Quote
Artanis I Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 I'd also like to add that I didn't even realise that the stud was actually a stud. I thought it was just the bit that sticks out under the flower but above the stem, the bud section on a flower (which should be green, not flower coloured). I'll have a go - at most of them, anyway :) Some good thinking there! Quote
Lego Otaku Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 I've always done it stud up for as long as I can remember- over 30 years because it looked better that way. I have a seen a few official instruction that had it stud down but I ignored those. Looking at common flowers like dandelions and daisies they have raised center that do suggest "stud" up. Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 (edited) But I guess this question is similiar to the question how to properly orientate toilet paper: Over or under? Bearing that in mind, I wonder if there is a connection between prefering the flower stud up and toilet paper over: Might be an interesting topic for a thesis... Hahaha, this is hilarious! But on a serious note, the toilet paper over has more functionality - when pulling directly down or toward the wall, you squeeze the paper against the wall which produces enough friction so that you are able to rip the piece with just one hand I guess that the stud up and toilet paper over are connected ... How about a Flower competition between the studs up and studs down groups? Create a up to 16x16 vig with flowers used in your preferred way. The group scoring a higher average of points given by public vote, uses the only right way! Edited May 29, 2014 by MstrOfPppts Quote
Superkalle Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Note: The QUIZ was moved to a separate topic here Quote
KateB Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Definitely studs down for me. When you look at a real flower which is higher, the middle of the flower or the petals? Case closed ;-) Quote
BirdOPrey5 Posted May 29, 2014 Author Posted May 29, 2014 I know real flowers have raised centers, but the center tends to be a different color than the flower itself so the little itty part of the green stem that pokes through the hole was the raised part for me when studs down. Quote
Dr Leg O Brick Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 (edited) Both! Seriously, I used to have the studs up, then I found some sets with them down, then changed mine to suit, as I thought I was doing it wrong, then spotted some sets with them up and thought damn it, I'll have it both ways! It's great to contribute to such an extremely serious, major and influential topic that's of dire importance to the continuation of all our sanity! Edited May 29, 2014 by Dr Leg O Brick Quote
