That_LEGO_Guy Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 My latest MOC based on a Unimog 416/U1100 (the biggest round hood type) Functions as it stands now: 4x4 driven by 2 XL Portal axles (using the Power Miners planetary drill piece) Pneumatic differential locks full live axle suspension using torque tubes and left right movement limiter, does the same as a panhard rod without the slight sideways movement And the 3-point stars in the wheels don't rotate with the wheels The overall axle flex is about 45º yet the chassis flexes only 10º Front clearance is a bit over 7 Rear is a bit under 7 Diff-lock function, rear axle show but is identical on each Unlocked Locked while no video yet, It can pull a 10kg weight More to come and thanks for reading :) That_LEGO_Guy Quote
MrNumbskull13 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 This thing is a beast! What are the red and grey things? Shocks? Quote
Hrafn Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 This thing is a beast! What are the red and grey things? Shocks? Looks like maybe? How well do they work as shocks? Quote
TinkerBrick Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Looks promising. Could you provide a closeup of your hub/portal axle. Does it have planetary gear reduction in the hubs? Quote
Paul B Technic Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 That looks like a good start, any progress on it? Quote
That_LEGO_Guy Posted May 10, 2014 Author Posted May 10, 2014 hey, sorry for the halted MOC, I'm waiting on some RC tires to replace the 8466 tires(no grip, too heavy and a bit too wide) and my IR receivers have stopped. Quote
That_LEGO_Guy Posted January 24, 2015 Author Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) Getting back to lego after about a year and re-started the unimog with 3rd party tires, bigger, thinner better grip and more realistic that the hallowed Power Puller wheels( it can still use them will be for for soft ground work like snow if I ever get a chance to see snow ) So it has the same specs as the original that was never finished, the axles are similar, a bit wider and stronger, but the front no longer has realistic caster angle like the original, needed room for the steering motor and it's LEGO so it's too slow for it to have an impact. Well here it is: After a LEGO direct order came I decided to re try at the unimog and update the axles, I now had enough for 3 axles so why not. I dropped the Red and Grey things as they were too soft and widened the axles a bit, puse got some rc crawler tires for it meant to get 4 but got 8 . After seeing it at this size it seemed it's off roading ability would be compromised ( turning circle about 2.5m) by the extra length and weight plus any of the U900/U1100 that had 3 axles where still 4x4 so I dropped the 3rd axle and remade everything from scratch, not that there was much there anyway, the torque tube, diff lock and thing that replaces the panhard rod are built with the same concepts or are almost identical, it's just held together better now and I have traded caster angle for ackerman steering.(What's in the first picture and the following) I decided I'd try for a brick build cab instead of technic as I have never done that, but as it would look lame in the grey of the 10188 death star I had to resort to LDD, all 4 doors open and the bonnet, nothing inside yet. As the 3rd party tires are larger that any in LDD I had to replicate them with tracks, 25 to be exact. I was wondering what it's size would be if it was next to 8110, thank you to Tore M for building it in LDD and putting it in the LDD forum. As the cab needs to be built in LDD I'm building this in tandem, both in real bricks minus cab and in LDD if you want the ldd file. Edited January 24, 2015 by That_LEGO_Guy Quote
Pat-Ard Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 (edited) Nice Unimog... Isn't the cab a bit wide? The Link to your lxf isn't working... Pat Edited January 25, 2015 by Pat-Ard Quote
