This is a set clearly aimed for kids, not afols. It's meant to be played with, not to be put on display. The plates design makes it look like it's made of random junk. Like a favela ghetto house, or something from Mad Max. I'm just slightly worried about how the two latest UCS sets have been play sets. I hope it's not the end of advanced, detailed looking models. It will be interesting to see what follows next.

While the new one is of course more detailed and has better figures, I still sort of prefer the old one due to it's more solid brick nature compared to the tons of plates in the new one...

I agree, whilst the old set maybe had less playability features or inside detail, on the outside it was a very accurate representation of the onscreen vehicle mainly due to the smooth outside.

The new set looks like a farmer took a shot at it with the muck spreading machine. Absolutely horrendous.

The price is even worse. Does Lego think that sticking a UCS logo on the outside of the box justifies high prices? *huh*

The only way I'm going to get this set is if it was discounted on Black Friday.

Urgh, if only there was a 'block comments from 12 year olds moaning about the cost of lego' button...

Sandcrawler has been sold at a discount to Lego's usual $0.10 / £0.10 per brick rate, the great irony is that the people who moan couldn't afford the set even if it was sold at half the price...

As a former owner of the old sandcrawler you'd have to be more than a bit biased to not notice the vast improvement in screen accuracy of this new version. I'd love to see some comparison pics to get a sense of just how much bigger the new sandcrawler is - any kicking about?

After spending a combined total of 8 hours putting this together (and I could have done it in one sitting if it weren't for that whole "going to work" thing), I have two pieces of advice:

1. Make sure you have good lighting on the instructions because good lord that is a lot of brown.

2. When you get to bags 7 and 8, build the treads first just to get them out of the way. Over three hundred of those little link pieces.

But you probably could have guessed both of those.

Thank you for the compliment but I'm actually 37 and this is a forum for people to express their opinions. And I can certainly afford it even at full price but that doesnt mean I have to throw money at everything Lego makes.

I dont understand where the £0.10 rate has come from? Is it something official?

If you are talking about acuracy in respect to the inside then I agree that the new model is a vast improvement. However on the outside the old model was perfect enough. The smooth exterior of the old model looked a lot more like the original version compared to the ugly million stud exterior of the new version which makes the sandcrawler look as if it has caught chicken pox.

I think it's disingenuous to assume that people who mention the cost of the set as a negative factor are all "12 year-olds" who deserve blocking. IMO the price of a set is a legitimate concern for most people, adults and children included.

AFOL or not, $300 for a building toy is no small matter. Perhaps you are very rich and this is no big deal to you personally, but I daresay the price of things are a big deal for most people, especially these days where economic times are more challenging for everyone in general.

I think most of the people in this discussion are simply pointing out that UCS is geared towards collectors and represents a "luxe" line with a higher price. And for that higher price, they expect certain things. I'm inclined to agree myself to a certain extent, but some people are ok with making the set playable regardless if it sacrifices some details. I think that is more of the discussion at the moment.

Well I think the 12-year olds will certainly not moan about the price, their rich parents will give it them anyway for their birthday if they whine long enough "I WANT it mummy, I WANT it!!!"

I do not think it is that overpriced at all. I think Lego will keep their prices as low as possible for them, and that it is certainly worth its price.

I do not know if I will get it however, it looks certainly nice but I can find no other use for it sitting somewere on a shelf collecting dust as it does not fit with most of the other (army-related) Lego.

Just wanted to tell you all that technically I am 37 - but when I get this bad boy home and build it, I will definitely pretend to be 12 again.

The price certainly is astronomical, but the model itself also looks astronomically good.

And... I have never had any Jawas before, so cannot wait on that front too.

It's all about the type of accuracy or model you are looking for. The old one has some better effects from the smooth sides, so a quick glance it looks better in some ways. The new one is actually a much more accurate model and far more closely captures the fairly complex angles and proportions of the studio model. Especially with those angle changes in the front. as far as the studs? it's Lego. studs are sort of part of it. And honestly I find UCS models tend to have a much greater amount of exposed studs than many system playsets.

I have begun building this set, but I'm now waiting for the tiles and wedges I have ordered to properly mod It. I believe the model has a good size, proportions and greble for a UCS. My issues with the model is that it needs a smoother surface, the colouring is off in some parts and the main window looks cheap. The side hatches are also too big in order to support a play feature, but I will fix that while keeping the feature intact.

An interesting observation is that lego has never produced a 3 x 6 wedge plate in Reddish brown. Thus the front of the model sports dark tan wedges - which was probably the colour closets to reddish brown. This needs to be fixed as well.

I would have finished the model by now, but this girl has promised helping me finish it, so now I have to be as slow as possible in order to get a maximum of dates with her… One brick at a time, no rush!:tongue::blush::devil::wub::sick::grin:

Hahaha! I suggest you do that, then, of course. Do not forger to build the tires in advance... Or else she would never come again

Just sweep the half-finished build off the table when you ravish her on top of it and then she'll have to come back again to help you put it back together...

I think it's a very nice set, but I won't be getting it. It's too expensive for what is essentially a big brown box, but if money and space were of no consequence then it would be a nice set to have. Display space is my biggest problem right now.

After finishing the build yesterday, I must say I liked both building it and the final result better than I though I would.

The faces on Luke and Owen are better than I thought. They are overly detailed but unless you are viewing them up close it is not so bothersome. The detailing on C-3PO is a bit over the top, I think I prefer the Ewok village version without leg printing. Still, I got a bunch of older C-3PO's, so a new print is welcome. The Jawas are great, the droids are not so interesting except for a few printed parts.

Overall I'm pretty satisfied with buying it. I still feel it is a bit on the pricey side though.

I swear they did not have women like that when we were growing up! (Ah! Who am I kidding. We wouldn't have noticed back then if we did.)

The detailing inside the cockpit is immense. The minifigure selection is great as well. Personally, as I said in a different topic I'm not a fan of looks face. Still, a set still looks worth getting.

Paying 300 euro for this set is to much. It looks ugly

with the plates on the sides. To many visible studes.

I rather bricklink Cavegod's or Marshal Banana's UCS Sandcrawler,

Quick look at my lego tells me that i already have about 4000 parts.

Including the threads, PF motors, technic bricks and a few reddish brown bricks and plates.

Now let's see what 300 euro of reddish brown looks like on bricklink:)
