Itaria No Shintaku Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I am really disgusted. There is plenty on ebay of people selling normal blue space guys as Benny. Some are even using heads which printings recall the one of the movie like http://www.ebay.it/itm/LEGO-Movie-Benny-1980-something-Space-Guy-Minifigure-Blue-Astronaut-w-smile-head-/201041224325?pt=Building_Toys_US&hash=item2ecefda285 and saying Benny has got cracked helmet in the movie, but this figure's helmet isn't cracked (we have no heart to crack a good condition rare helmet), so if the new owner want to make this helmet authentic, he/she have to crack it... Isn't this a fraud? Quote
Faefrost Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 It probably should say "custom", but there does not seem to be anything overtly fraudulent there. As long as the pics you see are the fig you get. It's a weird situation. Benny is by definition a representation of the classic 80's blue space man. And they are selling you a classic 80's spaceman (apparently in quite good shape) as a representation of Benny. It kinda makes your head hurt, but I don't think there is enough there to even get EBay to pull the auction. Quote
JGW3000 Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 EB should not be the e-bay police. Buyer beware. Quote

No, surely not, but in the meantime there is no doubt this person is selling one minifig for 25 times its auctual value only due to some people being terribly naive. Quote
Deathleech Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 They could probably make it a little more clear this isn't specifically "Benny" from the movie, and is in fact just a regular blue space figure. Like Faefrost points out though, Benny is based on the classic blue space man so even if it's not Benny specifically it's still the figure he was based on. Quote

That is what are known as market forces. Which operate via an equilibrium between informed consumers and morons. This seller is obviously targeting the moron market. Quote
naf Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Kind of knew this would happen when the movie came out. Glad I stocked up on extra 80's style spacemen well before it came out (not to sell mind you, I wanted more for my classic space layout). I've also noticed that any CMFs that showed up in the movie are flying out of my bricklink store. They've been sitting there untouched for over a year, and this week I've sold 10 of them. Quote

Hehehe... too bad Galidor LEGO sets weren't shown in the movie (haven't seen it yet).... It would be a refreshing change to see those stinkeroo sets flying off the shelf in BL stores... jodawill Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 He does say that the helmet hasn't been in production since 1988. Quote

I think one of the graphics was for Galidor. Quote
Vindicare Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 It's definitely underhanded, taking advantage of a situation and unknowing people. Quote
Lyichir Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I think it was sort of sideways mentioned as "those other things we don't like to talk about." I think one of the graphics was for Galidor. Firstly, that's a widely-circulated misquote that suggests that the movie was slandering those themes. What it actually said was "a bunch more we don't need to mention"—as in, we couldn't possibly list all the themes, so here's a bunch of more obscure themes that didn't make it into the movie. Secondly, Galidor wasn't among those themes. Bionicle, Fabuland, Speed Racer, and Friends were, though. Quote
TheBrickPal Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 "(Look at the picture well, this is the same helmet as in the movie)" I find this incredibly funny. Well, yes, it is the same helmet mold, but it IS missing the crack. Quote
DPrime Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I don't understand, really. I'd rather have a vintage blue than Benny any day... I mean, I want Benny too, but he'll be available in more than one set, right? Quote

I mean, I want Benny too, but he'll be available in more than one set, right? He will, but so far there's no word of him appearing in any set under $100. So he'll probably remain desirable even once both sets that include him are available. Quote
B-Lister Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 When the availability of actual Benny Minifigures becomes equal with demand, the demand, and value for classic blue Spacemen will go back down. Since Benny is currently only available in a $300 set, it won't equalize until a more affordable alternative (Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!) hits the market. Quote

Lyichir Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 The tone of the joke was definitely poking fun at the Fabuland series and the other ones they showed. Of course it was, considering it used mostly "weirder" and less traditional lines that wouldn't fit elsewhere in the movie. But it wasn't disparaging those themes so much as showing just how wide the variety of Lego worlds was, and it certainly wasn't using "failed" or maligned themes, as I've seen suggested repeatedly—Bionicle and Fabuland were both 10-year themes with sizeable fanbases, and Friends is one of Lego's most popular and successful current themes, even among AFOLs. naf Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 I just hope people buying classic blue spacemen don't start cracking the helmet to match Benny's in the movie. There are only so many of those helmets around in good condition! Quote

TNT apples Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I wouldn't really call it fraud, as the buyer is receiving exactly what they're paying for. I think it's just the seller ripping people off by saying it's 'Benny from the Lego Movie', thus jacking up the price. Blue classic spacemen only cost between £2-£4 on bricklink too... Quote
