DrJB Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) I got a hold of 2 of the old differentials (prior to 8880) and have 2 main observations: 1. The differential cage is actually made up of 2 parts that are glued ... interesting 2. The cage can accommodate both the 12 and 14 bevel gears ... First time I see #1, and it took me a while to 'wrap' my head around #2 Edited February 14, 2014 by DrJB Quote
unimog123 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 That's a bit odd. I did not notice this, but I also don't have 14 tooth gears. Quote
weavil Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 A picture would be nice. Because I'm lost or tired, but I'm having trouble picturing it in my head. Quote
Technyk32231 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 I've noticed this too. I actually got this differential from my dad's old Lego collection. He had it in the dragster set, which only had a two cylinder engine. Quote
allanp Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 It makes sense that both gears work as they will both work in the same situations. To create a limited slip diff (using an illegal technique) you can mix both old and new to make the diff action very stiff. Quote
SNIPE Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) all lego differentials can have 12 or 14 tooth gears but mixing them doesn't really work. Edited February 14, 2014 by SNIPE Quote
Junpei Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 The reason they can both fit is because while the 14 tooth gears are larger in diameter, they are also 2 LDU thinner. Also, another peculiar thing- both it and the new-style bevel diff have 28 teeth. TLH Quote
SNIPE Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 (edited) If the old diff have the spacers sticking out of the two holes it would be perfect 3L, and the 48 tooth gear can be used as a bevel or a spur The mini turntable is also 48 tooth bevel or spur Edited February 15, 2014 by SNIPE Quote
Junpei Posted February 15, 2014 Posted February 15, 2014 (edited) I had already modified one prior to this topic, and you reminded me that I should post it. It works amazing; it can handle super-high torque, fit 4 bevel gears in it (as opposed to 3 in the new-style diff), fit in a 5x7 frame, and is driven by a 12 tooth double bevel gear! Oh, and it's 28 teeth, not 48. TLH Edited February 15, 2014 by TwentyLeggedHen Quote
