Doc_Brown Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 I was just wondering how hard it would be to implement an idea I had for a EV3 moc. Basically I want to create a patrol dog model and its functions include the following. -Search and establish territory perimeter (living room) -Randomly patrol in the area -Return to Red water bowl occasionally -Return to Blue dog box to rest occasionally. ( when battery gets low, with a unique bark to let owner know) -Bark at any loud sounds (if possible) I'm not sure what the minimum of sensors would be required to perform such tasks, or if all the above is possible. Any advice would be very welcome. Also are the NXT motors and sensors are compatible with the EV3 block? Thanks! Quote
Jim Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Basically, I am working on the same kind of robot. Well....I have started creating the robot, but it's collecting dust at the moment. My idea was to have the robot navigating the room, creating some sort of map. It should be able to see the Points of Interest (like the water bowl) and store the location. When you place the robot at a random place in the room, it should start navigating and at some point recognizing it's location, using the internal map. From that point it should be able to navigate to the water bowl etc. The NXT motors and sensors are compatible with the EV3 brick. http://robotsquare.com/2013/07/16/ev3-nxt-compatibility/ Quote
Lakop Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 Great idea! One for those with mindstorms. H Quote

Sounds like a great project too. :) Do you think that amount of programing will take long? Quote
Jim Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 I think it will take some time. The best approach would (obviously) be to start simple and improve the software along the way. First have the bot navigate the room without hitting objects. This will be a challenge on it's own. Then you could add navigating to/searching for specific objects or IR sources. etc... Quote
Doc_Brown Posted February 12, 2014 Author Posted February 12, 2014 That good advice Jim, Thanks! What sensor do you think would be a minimum for this kind of project? Quote
JM1971 Posted February 14, 2014 Posted February 14, 2014 Can ev3 detect tennis balls? The reason I ask is I could do with a robot that can find and throw tennis balls to keep my real Dog happy. Quote

I have no idea tbh, I would really like to see some awesome stuff with EV3 from great builders, and see what is the limit of the computer. But I guess 32Gigs of memory is a lot of code to fill. Quote
