Alfadas Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Yesterday I asked you what the best set to army build orcs with. Today I ask if I can give bald orcs helmets. I didn't watch the LotR movies, but I did watch the Hobbit movies, but didn't see many orcs wearing helmets. Is it ok to give bald orcs helmets, if so, what helmets? I have a few helmets which I think look good. What is your opinion? Quote
The Architect Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 The middle helmet is sh*t on everything The first helmet is good on special soldiers and generals. I'd be going towards the third helmet for normal soldiers. By the way for the third helmet there is also a matching armor/breastplate thing. Quote
Alfadas Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 The middle helmet is looking good on Fantasy Era orcs, but indeed it doesn't look good on other orcs. The first helmet I could use for officers, and the last helmet I already use for orcs, but not in combination with the armor piece. I have a couple of them from the viking sets, but didn't try them on orcs yet. It might look good, so I will give it a try. Thanks! Quote
odidoma Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I like to youse the trolls with sand green color as orcs just to differ from the Lotr orcs and then I use to have randoms helmets and weapons, I see orcs as a group of misfits (in a good way) who use whatever they come over. Quote
InvincibleEagle Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 I like to youse the trolls with sand green color as orcs just to differ from the Lotr orcs and then I use to have randoms helmets and weapons, I see orcs as a group of misfits (in a good way) who use whatever they come over. That's how I feel. Aside from the Isengarders, orcs don't seem to be unified by any cultural style and could use almost any old medieval style helm and may even look fine in something like this: Quote
Alfadas Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 Maybe that could work for the archers? I will give it a try, just need to make an orc into an archer. I am sure he will be fine with that. Mordor or Gundabad orc for archer? Or make Yazneg an archer? Quote
Lord Vladivus Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 As many different helms and colours as possible, indeed hoods and the like might be good as well, perhaps for lightly armoured orcs. More armoured orcs are accurate as well. The key is as much variation as possible- orcs don't have a uniform, with the exception of the Uruk Hai and perhaps the Morrannon Orcs (although they're more of a colour scheme- red and dark metal. Quote
Alfadas Posted February 2, 2014 Author Posted February 2, 2014 Yeah, I think I can make the orcs look as random as possible, I have a few helmets I do not use. Prepare for pics in this thread the coming week. Quote

I find that thats what I end up doing. I wonder how many other people do this? Quote
AmperZand Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 If you're willing to use third party pieces, i.e. non-purist parts, you might want to consider helmets such as the one on the right head in this picture: Or the back one in this picture: Quote
odidoma Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 In looking forward to the pics. In my saga "the nine clans" I have two diffrent tribes with orcs, first my favorite the sand green orcs with random weapons/helmets and then I have the lotr orcs who are more army like. I think that's makes a nice mix with diffrent orcs who works in diffrent ways just like my human armies. Quote
Alfadas Posted February 5, 2014 Author Posted February 5, 2014 @amperzand: Thanks for the pic and tip, but I think I will stay with real Lego. I really do like the helmets (and weapons btw) some of the custom sites have, but I think they are kinda expansive, and I am afraid the quality isn't good enough. So, no custom helmets for me I am afraid in the near future. @odidoma: Pics of my rather small orc army will be up tomorrow. But shall I include a few uruks, just for more randomness? Quote
h22chen Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) Thanks amperzand for showing that other hair pieces would look on the 'bald' orcs, those look great; but I'm with Alfadas that I would only use "legit" Lego pieces. Off to find different hair pieces at Bricklink for me! Edited February 5, 2014 by h22chen Quote
Alfadas Posted February 6, 2014 Author Posted February 6, 2014 As promised, here are some pics of the army of orcs. And here are about 20 other orcs/uruks that still need to be randomized, but as they all have the same helmet, that is going to take a while. Yes, there are two Draugr in this pic (zombie vikings). Can you find them? And yes, there are some other armies behind them, don't pay attention to them. That's it, hope you like it. And the army will grow, also with Mordor/Gundabad orcs, and I hope with a couple of Moria orcs. Quote

If you're equipping a large army, the cost can quickly mount up especially if you're outside the US and have to pay shipping, duty and other taxes on top of the purchase price. Though not mentioned by you, I also appreciate that some AFOLs feel that they would be compromising the purity of their collection if they used third party products. I'm surprised by your concerns about quality. The main third party providers such as BrickWarriors, BrickForge and BrickArms and quite a few smaller providers such as BrickFortress produce LEGO-quality parts. You can find out which providers are most trustworthy through forums such as this one. Quote
Alfadas Posted February 10, 2014 Author Posted February 10, 2014 I live in The Netherlands, so the shipping prices might be a problem. But you said the quality is as good as the real Lego, so I might give it a try. But first I need the money. Before June (my birthday) I think I have ordered a few parts from Brick Warriors orso. Quote
Hepitos Posted February 10, 2014 Posted February 10, 2014 (edited) I ordered till today 4 times at brickwarriors. The quality of products are partially better than LEGO. Especially the breastplates. I will show a photo of my orc army when my next oder arrives (probably 2-3 days). But they are not soooo expensive. If you buy some chests and weapons on BL, you will give nearly the same. Third party shops are a very good alternative, if you would like to create a big army with different gear AND "free shipping" :) Edited February 10, 2014 by Hepitos Quote
Alfadas Posted February 10, 2014 Author Posted February 10, 2014 I saw a few awesome looking parts over at Brick warriors, that demon helmet is so cool! Quote
Hepitos Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 is there a way to upload pictures ? i have registered me on brickshelf, but iget no confirmation mail to login. i don't have a yahoo account, so flickr is also not possible for me :( Quote
Alfadas Posted February 16, 2014 Author Posted February 16, 2014 Flickr is an option, you can also log in using your facebook or google (not sure about google though) account. I use facebook for flickr! Quote
Hepitos Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) thx, google is working. as i promised, my little orc army with third party items :) sry, for bad quality of pictures http://www.flickr.co...03/12567351553/ http://www.flickr.co...03/12567350583/ http://www.flickr.co...03/12567709304/ Edited February 16, 2014 by Hepitos Quote
Alfadas Posted February 16, 2014 Author Posted February 16, 2014 They look awesome! Brickwarriors.com, right? And I don't think the pics are bad. Quote
SirBlake Posted February 16, 2014 Posted February 16, 2014 That's one of the best Orc armies I've seen. They should look like a disorganized rabble and you've captured that perfectly. Quote
