Legowife Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Hi can anyone help me? I have purchased the Lego technics f1 car for my husband Christmas present. He often talks about the set being motorised or remote control. Can anyone help me so that I can buy the right parts to do this as want everything ready for him to do it straight from the box on Christmas Day. Has anybody done this before and can anyone guide me in the right direction in what to buy? Sorry for all the questions. Quote
Nico van Duin Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Hi, everything you need to motorize it are a powerfunctions batterybox (part number 8881) and a powerfunctions m motor (part number 8883). Quote
zux Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Hi Legowife, it depends what do you or your husband means by motorizing a set. There is official Power Functions add-on set 8293: With this add-on you will be able to motorize rear spoiler and engine hood only. If there is a need to motorize it for remote drive and control, you will need much of the parts and there will be a need for custom modification of a set. Quote
Jim Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Hi Legowife, I agree with Zux. The official motorization does not result in remote controlled steering or driving. It's used to motorize rear spoiler and engine hood. However I would still suggest buying the PF set so he can do the official motorization. After that he can join this forum and we will show him some options for fully motorizing it. I will look up the topic(s) and post it here. PS don't forget to buy some batteries Quote
allanp Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 (edited) Yes, the official instructions that come with the set tell you to get the motor set 8293 pictured above and shows the builder how to use it to motorise the opening of the hood and the movement of the rear spoiler. If that is what your husband wants then the motor set 8293 is the only extra thing you will need. However, this will not make the car driveable via remote control, which led to some of us here on the forum to make our own custom motorisation. If your husband has built a few sets then he should find this custom mod pretty simple http://www.eurobrick...3 . To do this mod I used 1 x http://shop.lego.com...-8881#shopxlink , 1 x http://shop.lego.com...R-Receiver-8884 (actually I used a version 2 receiver, but you can only get that by buying another large set and this version 1 receiver should be fine), 1 x http://shop.lego.com...Listing=listing , 1 x http://shop.lego.com...te-Control-8885 , 1 x http://shop.lego.com...Listing=listing and a couple of pins and one or two bits and bobs to strengthen the gearing, which your husband will likely have if he has another technic set already, but the parts I listed are the main ones and make up most of what he'll need. Oh and 6 AA batteries! However that little lot will work out more expensive than the standard motor set and some parts may be out of stock. So without knowing exactly what your husband means by motorising, the safe bet is probably to just go for the standard motor set. A 42000 race car and an 8293 motor set is a pretty awesome gift, waaaaaaay better than slippers! . Any questions just ask Edited December 10, 2013 by allanp Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 (edited) You lot have forgotten the 3 AAA batterys for the receiver... Edited December 10, 2013 by Alasdair Ryan Quote
allanp Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 (edited) No we haven't, the receiver doesn't take batteries , but what you have forgotten is the 3 AAA for the transmitter Edited December 10, 2013 by allanp Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Yes the remote or what ever you call it,that will be her confused now. Quote
Legowife Posted December 16, 2013 Author Posted December 16, 2013 Thanks for the replies guys. Very confusing, one more question if I buy the 8293 set will he need that plus the bits listed by Allan for full remote control? As would like to get as many bits as I can to really surprise him as he thinks i don't have a clue when it comes to lego :-) Quote
Jim Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I think Allan can fill you in on the details of which parts you need. Ordering extra parts directly at Lego might take too long for them to arrive and the servo motor is out of stock. You should buy them of Bricklink. For example, here are the servo motors: http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?q=Power%20Functions%20Servo%20Motor Maybe Allan can provide you with a list of Bricklink parts, so you can order them there. In the best case, from a single seller. Where are you located? And please bare in mind that making the model fully remote controlled, won't make it drive really fast. It's performance will be poor, compared to real RC toys. Just so you, and he, won't be disappointed Whatever you do; getting him the 42000 and the PF set is awesome! You rock! He can always join Eurobricks so we can explain to him what he needs to buy. Collecting separate parts and rebuilding the model can be fun too! Quote
Legowife Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 Hello everyone my wife has passed the account onto me after surprising me at Christmas with the 42000 and pf set. Thanks for the advice you all gave her. Thought I would do a little introduction have recently got back into lego with my 6 year old son building some of the lego city sets with him which is great fun but have been looking to get back into the more complex stuff and have recently built the vw camper van after approx 15 years away from building anything. I really like the f1 car and have it 3/4's built but would really like to make it r/c (my other hobby is nitro r/c cars). I understand it will be nowhere near the same performance wise but still think it would be cool to combine the 2. However things have moved on since I last built anything so I don't have a clue on how to do this. Would it be possible for one of you guys to advise me on how to do this? Quote
Jim Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Great to hear you liked the surprise! And you have a nice username Have you read the topics mentioned earlier? Currently there's no step-by-step guide to making it motorized (correct me if I am wrong). Quote
