REVIEW: Clone Lieutenant

Not really much of a review, but some of our European members may not be able to get a hold of one, so here's a little mini review. Originally this minifigure was only given away to volunteers at the June Star Wars Weekend in California. But is now released in a poly bag for anyone who spends $50 or more at a Lego Store or at shop@home. It appears that it varies among stores whether you can receive two from a $100 purchase, or if it's one per order. I placed two separate orders at shop@home and managed to get my hands on two of these guys. Regardless, onto some pictures.

Packaged in the typical minifigure polybag, it shows him aimlessly walking around a battlefield with several explosions, not to mention a potential foreshadowing too order 66 . Note there is no set number.

Attempting to open the bag another way to preserve it was faulty, and was then forced to rip the pre-made tears. Oh well. 5 pieces like it says.

Unfortunately this is made from the dreaded 'China plastic' which can be distinguished by the plain neck piece and a small 'lego' logo on the inside of the right arm. Neither of the arms or legs seemed flimsy, but may wear out easier than our regular parts.

As mentioned you can't tell from looking normally it's of lower quality. He does look very nice though. I wasn't expecting the blue to be this light. Figuring it would be more of a dark blue.

The back is printed the same as any other clone we've received.

He sports the same 4 blue dot pattern as seen on the Clone Captain, Sergeant and Commander.

If I can give any advice to our European members, if you're looking to get one of these guys. Wait until more people have made their $50 purchases and gotten extras. Lowest price on Bricklink so far is $14.47. Getting more reasonable than the initial $30-$50.

So its a lighter blue than the "regular" (like the 501st trooper)? what a shame , at least I won't feel so bad for not getting one of these.

Thanks for the review Ritz Brick, although the photos seem to have dissapeared

I'm still hoping that this will be available as a promo in Europe at some point..... I'll never understand Lego's approach to this sort of thing, especially in the days of the internet. I'm still feeling rather grumpy about the May 4th B-wing (offer) but it's probably best if I stop at that point!!

So what exactly makes you think it is of lower quality? You have it right there in your hand, and can feel the plastic, tell how strong it is, etc.... Are you just assuming any elements of Chinese origin are of lower quality, or have you somehow actually tested the quality?

Well actually, if you watch the Clone Wars, some phase 1 501st clones were dark blue, some were plain blue (like lego's 501st trooper), and some were light blue (like the lieutenant). Actually, lego's 501st clone's blue is incorrect, as it should be dark blue not plain blue.

The Lieutenant should be a light teal, the 501st colour varies on TCW. but it is meant to be a darker blue, like the ROTS troopers.

Just to clarify, the "official" giveaway is that you must spend $50 or more on Star Wars themed LEGOs. The MIni VW Camper Van goes with all other purchases that total over $75. I'm not sure if you can get both if you buy over $75, including over $50 of Star Wars...

I'm up to 2 clone Lt. troopers right now. If they don't sell out by Oct 1st, I might add a 3rd. My 501st squad will be awesome! (I currently have the new Captain Rex, 3x phase two 501st trooper, 1x 501st pilot, and 2 of these clone Lt. troopers).

So did I. It's pretty standard for them to do that - I've frequently made purchases that qualified for more than one promotional freebie; this was just the latest example.

It does feel cheap, the legs have a bit more give to them, the colouring isn't as great (seems a little more faded). If you hold it up to the light, the plastic on the legs is a bit more translucent.

It seems to me that's technically more a way of distinguishing the Chinese molds and not the actual plastic, except by association.

My point was that simply having different mold marks on the arm or whatever isn't itself an indicator of plastic quality.

The plastic does feel different, it feels of the same quality as the collectible minifigures.
