I've been building some of the modular buildings, some of the dc stuff, and a few of the creator stuff (a apple tree house and the tree house) oI recently decided that I wanted to start buying some of the city stuff so our son can grow up building a collection of stuff. He is only almost three right now and enjoys playing with the cars and stuff with the city series when I'm there with him (he's to little to play with it by himself.) I'm looking to buy a building that we can play with and wanted to get some suggestions.

I'm reading some reviews online and having a hard time deciding which building to start it. They are all so pricey I'm not sure which one to go with.

I'd like to get some suggestions from you on what would be a good first building to buy. Also any suggestions on how to start building our a fun lego city to play with. So far I've only bought the garbage truck and the police chase (just for the cars...my son likes to play with the cars.)

Looking for your feedback, thanks!

By the way the plane and space ship look like they would fun to play with and that they wouldn't break apart as easily for a little kid to play with, but not sure...thoughts on that as well.

I also have three year son. I have small layout in basement and he really likes to go there. I have a lot of sets, including almost all city stuff from last few years (i started buying for similar reasons like you).

My son also likes cars and trains (dont they all) so most of city stuff is ok for him. He really likes roller garage doors in helicopter rescue and helicopter arrest, conveyor belt from trash compactor escape and large yellow city crane from 2005. But real winner is last years 4207 city garage. Its big, it has space for lots of cars (four included), working lift (he can easily operate it), working car wash, repair shop ( to change/remove wheels), gas pump and entry ramp. There is really a lot to play with and set is sturdy enough, to take most of the abuse a three year could come up with (small pieces could fall of, but main structure is really strong).

Other thing I recommend are train. I have many tain, but red city train is his favourite. I just removed motor and made push type ( he likes it better that way).

Where are you located? I would highly recommend the 2011 police station (783 pieces). It's on clearance at Walmart - $60 in Canada and $83 in the US. It's a fantastic set with lots of playability. 2 vehicles, a bike, 6 minifigs, a dog, jail cells that open, 3 stories, 2 garages that open and close. You can add the 2008 helicopter to the set as well. I have most of the modulars and a bunch of city sets and most of the great vehicles in my city.
