conductorjoe Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Well I'm proud to announce I've made the first ever fansite/resource site for the upcoming LEGO MMOG. (More info here). X-D As you can imagine there's barely anything there right now, since all we have is the press release and the LEGO Page as far as game info goes. The site design is pretty simple right now, but after game content like screenshots and stuff becomes available, I'll update the site accordingly and eventually make a "full" site that actually looks like a site for the game. The url is http://brickmmog.com. If you're interested in playing the game or are just curious, please stop by the forum! I just put the forum online 10 minutes ago so there's no one there right now. Governor Mister Phes Posted March 19, 2007 Governor Posted March 19, 2007 As soon as I read "MMOG Fansite" I wonder what MMOG stands for, fortunately the website provides the answer to that: Massively Multiplayer Online Game. And this leads me to my next ponder - exactly what is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game? Quote
Hobbes Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 And this leads me to my next ponder - exactly what is a Massively Multiplayer Online Game? You won't believe it but it's an online game with a massive amount of users. Massive as in "hundreds of thousands", not just "many". Quote

Imagine hundred of thousands LEGO fans gathered in on place. 8-| Too bad that I Quote

Starwars4J Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 I don't believe it!Actually, guessed there would be lots of users involved but exactly what are doing in this game? That is the question of the hour with this game. The most common type of MMOG is an MMORPG, where you take the role of a character and go along on some epic quest. Another popular MMOG genre is the FPS, or First Person Shooter. Games like counterstrike and Halo that allow you to play against other people are included in this. What will the lego one be like? Maybe something closer to an online version of SIMS Quote

Nah. :P If you any of you are familiar with World of Warcraft, Everquest, SWG, Runescape, and other MMOGs, you can get an idea of what this game will be like. Hopefully it will be different from the usual focus on leveling and such. FPS games aren't MMOGs. MMOG means that you are on the same server playing with thousands of other people-as in you can all stand together and see each other, all thousand of you, on your monitor. @Asuka: Thanks =D Quote

In essence the word "MMOG" should go out of use. It is simply a technical word. An MMORPG is: Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game Role Playing Game. That means you assume a role that is not the one you play in real life. There is not a single video game in the world where you do not assume a role different than your person in real life. Very simple. The fact that most MMORPGs are violent, leveling-driven fantasies does not change the definition of the word. RPG games also usually means that you will be able to gain new things to do in the game as you invest more time into playing and complete "quests" and such. So your character will not stay the same forever. Going back to what I said a minute ago about the definition of MMORPG, it would be nice to see LEGO take the "MMORPG" label and do something totally new with it. Quote

Going back to what I said a minute ago about the definition of MMORPG, it would be nice to see LEGO take the "MMORPG" label and do something totally new with it. Well, I hate to be technical, but RPGs are kinda my thing :-P RPGs do stand for Role Playing Game as you mentioned, and indeed every game you assume a role, but RPG is a genre, obviously it can't be all encompassing, or there would be no use for it at all. RPG games need a system of leveling up, it's not just a feature that may or may not be in it. Zelda is definitely not an RPG, even though you assume the role of Link. It's an action/adventure game. Same with Mario, Sonic, etc. And the fact that such a game was possible with LSWII and they chose the path of Action/Adventure leads me to believe that it will not be RPG, but rather maybe SIMs-like (building your own house in a community. Building a car. Going out with people to explore lego caves, or something), but I'd doubt RPG like (a character or group of characters on a mission that involves leveling up). Of course I may be totally off, maybe they will make it an RPG. But that also doesn't change the meaning of the term for the genre :-P Quote
UltraPrime Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Yeah, I can't see it being a MMORG but a MMOG (there is a difference!). I'm a great fan of the Sims games, and would enjoy something along those lines. Being Lego, I hope the emphasis to be on the building. Quote
conductorjoe Posted March 21, 2007 Author Posted March 21, 2007 @Starwars: Heh, you're right. What I mean is that it you will probably be able to "level" your character or change him based on things you do in the game, which usually means people will call it an RPG, whether it is one or not. I really hope it's not just like Blockland or something where all you can do is build and can't really make an lasting impression on the game world. Quote
