Praiter Yed Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 This will be part of a much larger vignette which will incorporate multiple scales and custom figures. For that I'll be borrowing ideas from other builders, eg Beaver's excellent micro X-Wing, and initially this was supposed to be based heavily on Stardusty's design with just a few of my own 'additions'. Sadly, I ended up losing all the things I really liked about Stardusty's X-Wing ... The big engine vents, the cannons and the hexagonal rear. It's going to be a while before I can really get stuck into my vignette so I've decided to show this as a separate creation. C&C and advice on any improvements will be gladly received (I'm kind of wishing Fallen Angel was still around (i miss that guy))... I've already tried a few variations on the nose - I'd love to have some opinions on these... Quote
Artizan Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 this is an amazing mini moc of x-wing, my favorite detail is orange stud as the pilot. the nose looks good as its current condition, and the variations really dont add anything special imo. Quote
M<0><0<DSWIM Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 This is all sorts of cool! I love the SNOT work on the nose. I wonder, though, if the wings seem a bit short? Quote

Great micro X-wing  Thanks This is all sorts of cool! I love the SNOT work on the nose. I wonder, though, if the wings seem a bit short? Yes, the wings are too short - I decided 6 stud wings would be too long but I've only just realised that I could just add and extra 1x3 plate at the start of the wing and use the 1x2 plate with clip to connect it. Can't believe I didn't think to do it already . Cheers Quote
TheLegoDr Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 That is a great x-wing! Very fitting for the scale. Great job there. I like the nose in the main picture, the one you chose, the most. I really like the furthest left nose on the variation photo, but that doesn't scream x-wing to me. It looks cool though. If you ever create your own ship, that would be a good start. I can't wait to see the vignette now! Quote
Brickdoctor Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 That looks incredible, Praiter. Some very nice compact SNOT in there. I like the nose you built the best. The one on the left has the exposed stud and he one on the bottom right has a more abrupt transition from the tip to the rest of the nose. The only thing that looks a little 'off' to me is the cockpit area...I think it might be because of those 2x4 wedge plates, which you have angling up, whereas the 'real' X-wing angles down right under the cockpit in the transition from nose to engine area. I'm not sure if there's anything that you need covered up in the area that forces you to orient them the way they are now. Everything else, Quote
Mr Man Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 You had me at the cockpit. The nose on the main one is perfect no need for a nose job, as the others don't really add anything IMO. Quote
Tariq j Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Brilliant X-wing! Much better than TLG's by far. Quote
Nom Carver Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Very nice little creation , I find it completely flawless at this scale, you captured as much detail as possible. Quote
Captain_Rex Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 (edited) This mini-MOC looks awesome and looks a lot better than LEGO's version in my opinion. (Here is a picture of it below.) Edited August 13, 2013 by Captain_Rex Quote
Esurient Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Great job on the x-wing! I like how you built the nose! Everything else looks good to me! Quote
Praiter Yed Posted August 13, 2013 Author Posted August 13, 2013 Posting a model of the most 'iconic' star-fighter in Star Wars is quite scary - thank you all for your nice comments ! The end of the nose is really bugging me but I'm going to go with popular opinion and leave it as is . I can't wait to see the vignette now! I'm hoping to do an interpretation of the Jung/Hildebrandt posters - with a bit of added 'artistic licence'. I've already done the custom figures (hopefully I'll get chance to shoot them soon) but Vader's helmet is challenging! 'snip' The only thing that looks a little 'off' to me is the cockpit area...I think it might be because of those 2x4 wedge plates, which you have angling up, whereas the 'real' X-wing angles down right under the cockpit in the transition from nose to engine area. I'm not sure if there's anything that you need covered up in the area that forces you to orient them the way they are now. You're right, the wedge plate is necessary to cover some stuff, and also to hold the rest of the nose in place. I can't face it in the opposite direction because the wide end sticks up too much. Despite its inaccuracy, I like that it makes a smooth transition from the nose to fuselage. I can live with it (for now at least ). I want one now! You can probably have one - The LDD image in the first post links to the LDD file (when public). Brilliant X-wing! Much better than TLG's by far. This mini-MOC looks awesome and looks a lot better than LEGO's version in my opinion. (Here is a picture of it below.) 'snip' TLG's has the advantage of being sturdy and easy to play with. Mine will hold up to swooshing but changing the wing configuration is a PitA! The wings can be adjusted but it's easier to slot them off the back and slot them back on than it is to alter them in situ. Plus TLG's is smaller . Quote
BEAVeR Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 This looks like a very fine model indeed! Congratulations! It's nice you even managed to incorporate the wingtip deflectors. I especially like the fuselage, but I would suggest grill tiles instead of normal 1 x 2 tiles on the side. You could simmulate the torpedotubes then. As for the nose, I would suggest using part 11477 (1 x 2 curve brick). Then the fuselage would look a little longer, while ending smoothly. The difference in hight between the nose and the fuselage could be avoided as well. All in all, I think that part would make a good nose. It's available in both white and dark grey, so it would be feasible as well. Really looking forward to your finished diorama! Quote
Praiter Yed Posted August 27, 2013 Author Posted August 27, 2013 (edited) Thanks for the tips BEAVeR. I've already made some 'improvements' and I had considered a 1x3 curve for the nose (too long) but I wasn't aware of the 1x2 curve's existence. I think I'll give that a go when I can get hold of one Edited August 27, 2013 by Praiter Yed Quote
Lego Spy Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 It's amazing how it's so small but all the colors fit in still! Quote
Rocketbilly Posted August 27, 2013 Posted August 27, 2013 Absolutely fantastic MOC! It's going to look really good as part of the finished project. Great work! Quote
