Fuppylodders Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Well, it started off nicely, I was hitting every target they threw at me. But I had it on full thrust for too long after trying to hit an X-wing leader for what seemed an age... and overheated an ion conducting relay. That fried the circuits, and what bloody good timing! An officer happened to be coming along. After getting an earbashing, I was told not to go back in it for a week and to read up on the flight manual again. Its been such a long day Tie flight sim by Daft Vader1, on Flickr http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/ This is my first ever scenario trying to depict part of a storyline. The thought came to me trying to think what a pilot would be doing randomly in his spare time/life while on board the Death Star. Unfortunately my parts/plates etc is very limited, and so are my photo skills :( I often find it difficult trying to build something completely from scratch and so I can only apologise for the crudeness in which this appears in! Captain Settle Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Good idea for a build, and I like the steps up to the simulator. I also like the control panel and the way the simulator looks like its moving around uncontrollably. Quote
Sebeus I Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 I love it, I don't think I ever saw a Tie Fighter simulator, nice little story as well. There are some rough edges on the moc yes but the main design works well, good use of shock absorbers. Quote
Fuppylodders Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 (edited) My main issue with it is that in a flight simulator area, there would be lots of space, for it to move around so it would be in a big open hall of some sort... but I don't have a lot of plates to cover a large enougha rea, and I certainly can't make it enclosed with walls around it as there wouldn't be room for it to move around! Ahhh... the struggles of an apprentice Thank you very much for the comments though Edited August 4, 2013 by Fuppylodders Quote
Brickdoctor Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 I like the concept; it's a great introduction for a character who in-universe might just be sitting on a Star Destroyer waiting to go into battle for the first time. And I like the fact that it looks like it could work, with the hoses and the shock absorbers holding up the cockpit resembling a TIE/ln cockpit. Steps are nicely done as well. I don't think you've done that extremely poorly with the pieces you did use. If you have the pieces for it, I would try smoothing out that cockpit by using some more, differently angled slopes, or maybe try using a Lowell Sphere-based solution. I'm not sure if it was what you intended or not, but don't be afraid to make it look like a vignette instead of an immersive set! A more squared-off base, a white background, more and brighter light sources — they won't look like you're 'there' as a viewer, but it can look less like you might have run out of pieces and it'll be easier to see the MOC. Ahhh... the struggles of an apprentice Don't worry if you can't build the walls — just make the vignette a little smaller so they would be 'outside' the boundaries of the MOC! It's not as complete, but it's a more refined look. Quote
Fuppylodders Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 Thank you for the suggestions Brickdoctor! I believe I may have to invest in a baseplate or 2, to help me along with a vignette style. I know what you mean about the sphere, and perhaps if I were to make a 'real' Tie, I may well attempt to (Now you've got me thinking about it!). But my intention was to make it look something not so perfect, that would be clear it is just a 'box' with equipment for a simulator inside. In all honesty, I looked at the current Tie/in set for inspiration as Im still relatively newb/new to making something from scratch that I havn't spent weeks thinking about. I rather love this idea of the SONE story arc, as it will force me to create some sort of small vignette that I often see and admire others for their exemplary effort in achieving such great detail in such small space. Sort of resembles the real thing in some aspects, but the exterior is purely functional, like the Apollo Command Module simulator. I think some more greebles and protruding boxes and things to hold unknown machinery might help that look, though I don't know if you have the pieces for it.As for a vignette base, I wouldn't go with a baseplate. I'd do something brickbuilt, with some sort of smooth, single-color (black and dark bley are good choices) outline around a base of plates. It would be expandable as you build bigger, and it has a sort of sophistication that baseplates don't have. It can be as simple as some plates with a 1-brick-high, 1-stud-wide black wall around the edge and tiled over. Quote
Nom Carver Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Great Idea, the side hoses shape does make it feel like it is moving. Quote
Fuppylodders Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 I shall put in a bricklink order for some white tiles and black plates/tiles for flooring. I noticed the tie fighter set has some nice big tiles with studs around its edges which could be useful. I shall get right on it! Quote
Esurient Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 Very nice, I like the idea of the flight simulator, where else do you think they get their training from? Quote
Tariq j Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Brilliant and creative idea! I really like the simulater and I've never seen it before. Quote
Wedge09 Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Really nice and uncommon idea doing a simulator  Quote
Shadows of Nar Eurbrikka Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Judges have awarded you 2 XP! Your character's stats will be updated shortly. Quote
Fuppylodders Posted August 6, 2013 Author Posted August 6, 2013 Yay! Thats more than 1xp, Im happy Quote
kermit Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Im confused. Is the small hexagonl box suppose to be a monitor that the pilot is looking through or is it suppose to represent a tie fighter. Quote
TenorPenny Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 Frankly, the movement features for the pilots would be verging on pointless, but it looks damned cool..! Quote
Fuppylodders Posted August 6, 2013 Author Posted August 6, 2013 Its supposed to represent the shape of a Tie fighter to let the pilot get a better feeling of being inside one. The 'viewing' hole would be filled with some sort of holographic image projected to it but if I represented that, you wouldn't be able to make out the already difficult to see pilot inside it. Thats a good point Tenor... the movement would be pointless due to lack of gravity in space for a real Tie! Quote
Bkrosell Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 I love the way you show motion in your moc, it sort of brings it to life. Quote
