xboxtravis7992 Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Yesterday I joined Flickr. I was excited, knowing their is a large FOL group their. I also wanted to use it to share some of my other photo hobbies such as my train pictures, life photos, vacations and maybe some of my cartoons; connecting them to audiences across the web. I found the site was fast, and quick to learn, and despite the recent redesign I was able to use it well. However my experience was soiled when I read over the safety and content settings. I was shocked to realize that Flickr plays host to graphic photos I would not want to see. I debated if Flickr's "Safe Mode" would protect me from those photos or not. I eventually decided to delete my account, since I do not want to be affiliated with a website which hosts such images. I feel my perception of Yahoo is tainted, and surprised they would allow such photos on a popular site as Flickr. However I am sad that my only way to connect my MOC's to the FOL community is through the aging Brickshelf and MOCpages. I am curious as to if any other FOL's have found sites similar to Flickr which don't host graphic content. I also wonder if anybody else has had issue with Flickr's allowance of graphic content, or if I am the lone person who is concerned about it. I have also heard many FOL's expressing their desire for a FOL dedicated photo sharing website with capabilities similar to Flickr, and I wonder if that would be a solution to my problems. Quote
Bricksonwheels Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I think you're oversensitive. I have been on flickr for many years now, and only browse my contacts and Lego, cars/trucks related groups. Nothing wrong going on there in my opnion. Quote
Vincent Kessels Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I think you're overreacting. In all the years I am using Flickr I have never encountered any graphic content. Quote
Aanchir Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I've never come upon anything particularly graphic on Flickr either, helped of course by the fact that I mainly use it for LEGO-related content and that I keep "SafeSearch" on. Overall, there's almost no chance of coming across that kind of thing by accident if you're viewing LEGO content in particular, at least no more than there would be on Wikipedia or Google Image Search. As far as conscientious objection to using sites that host offensive photos is concerned, I think that's an overreaction. It'd be like deciding you wouldn't go to the library anymore because some of their romance novels might include sex scenes, or deciding you wouldn't go to an art museum because there are nudes in some of their paintings and sculpture. If that kind of thing really offends you so much, just learn to avert your eyes, or in this case, use the site's built-in tools to protect yourself from offensive content. And if you DO end up coming across something illicit completely by accident even after having taken reasonable precautions, THEN you're perfectly justified in curtailing your use of the site. Quote
Bobskink Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 (edited) Porn on Flickr? Even if it's allowed, people don't use Flickr for that. I never came across anything dirty on Flickr, unless it's some nudity in an artistic context, but I don't mind. I also think that you're a little over sensitive. However, it's your opinion and you have every right to delete your accout if you have moral isseus with the site. Edited May 25, 2013 by Bobskink Quote
Spitfire2865 Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 The thing is Flickr is a public photo site. They cant just not allow what some people would find offensive. You are going to find stuff like that anywhere on the internet if you look hard enough. That is why they have the "Safemode" option. That way, if you dont want to see something, it doesnt show up. I say you give it another chance. Dont let the rare possibility scare you away. And another thing. My flickr is set to moderate and I have never seen anything that you seem to be nervous about. So safe mode would be perfect for you. Quote
jimmynick Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Eh. Yahoo is letting Tumblr keep the X-rated content. There are lots of great photos on Flickr, aside from the LEGO pictures. I've never seen graphic content on Flickr, and I haven't even specially configured my settings. But I suppose that if you wanted to see it, you could. I haven't read the T&Cs on Flickr, but to me, Yahoo isn't responsible for its members' content. Just find where you want to hang out and everything'll be OK. Quote
1974 Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Try using search terms like "LEGO", "LEGO MOC", "LEGO AFOL" etc, instead of "XXX" Really, if you get that offended by running into random whatever, you'd better stay completely away from internet Quote
Wodanis Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 (edited) I agree with the others here, I joined Flickr awhile ago and have not encountered anything I really did not want to look at. Now unless you want to go looking for x-rated content that is your choice. However how is your experience 'soiled'? If I took offence at everything I encountered on line or off line I would never experience life. I would advise you to grow up and just enjoy the AFOL community where ever we are. obsidianheart Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Gotta ask, do you mean "graphic" in the terms of nudity, or in the terms of violence? Quote
Grimmbeard Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I agree with everyone here, you're probably overreacting. Now if you came across this in a LEGO related group, then I can definitely agree with your decision to be angry . Honestly though, as this is the internet, you can find that kind of stuff anywhere, and if you're offended, then you shouldn't be on it. And even if you do see something like it, just shrug it off, it's not really a big deal. Quote
dr_spock Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 What may be offensive to you may not be offensive to others and vice versa. Best thing is to setup and operate your own site. Then you can have control over the content. Quote
