Junpei Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 So I was looking at the 8880 parts list when I discovered a strange piece. I later learned that it's used to move driving rings. Does anybody have one to compare performance-wise to the changeover catch? Quote
Someonenamedjon Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 The bottom of them both look the same...I think that they would be the same. Quote
Junpei Posted May 9, 2013 Author Posted May 9, 2013 The bottom of them both look the same...I think that they would be the same. What do you mean? Do you own one? It doesn't seem like it's the same bottom, and it seems to shift more realistically (at 45 degrees instead of 90). Quote
redoak Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 You need 6543 too for shifting gears with that stick. Quote
allanp Posted May 9, 2013 Posted May 9, 2013 You need to combine it with this piece: http://rebrickable.com/parts/6543 It only allows up to 4 gears HOWEVER I still much prefer it to the newer version because changing gears is much smoother and easier. With the new one you have to move the stick to neutral, use two fingers to wiggle and slide it over to the next set of driving rings then move it forwards or backwards. The gate does not guide the gear stick into place for you like in a real car, it only prevents you from selecting two gears at once. But with this older one from 8880 it's a much more natural and realistic feeling gear change, just place one fingure on the top and move it to where you want it and it will guide it into place just like a real car. Now that I consider how the stick goes at an angle in the base plate, I would assume that the new one is better. Quote
