Great Review of what will probably be a classic set.The only point I might argue is the "Playability" Yeah the set doesn't have a lot of gimicky built in play features, but the set itself is a true playset in every sense of the word. 3 horses. Stagecoach. 2 Bandits. A Damsel in Distress. The LR and Tonto. Loot to be stolen and weapons to hold em off. What more do we need? Heck the story tells itself. You don't need to have seen the movie in order to know what you have here. (Compare that to the Superman Black Zero set).

Thank you for the review

You are so right, this is already an instant classic. Not even avaiable everywhere yet, and it's already one of the best sets of '13.

I really want this...but I want to swap out the red parts with black and add two skeletal horses and a zombie driver. Instant scary-carriage for the Monster Fighters line, and I think it'd be a bit more appropriate than the hot-rod hearse we got (not a bad set, but not my cup of tea).

Thanks for the excellent review KielDaMan. As I already suspected, it seems to be a realy outstanding set, and your review just confirms it. The only "flaw" maybe the scale difference between the carriage and the horses. I didn't notice it when looking at the boxart and early pictures, but your pics do reveal it. Well, let's just imagine its a coach belonging to the Poney Express company.. :-)

Somehow it is a pitty it is such a good set, because since I first saw some leaked pictures of the LR line, this set is high on my 2013 wishlist. But I am afraid it will probably just stay there. As much I like it, the 55€ (72US$) Lego is asking for it over here is realy crossing the limit. For less than double of that price (99€) I prefer have the train set.

I still don't understand why with many licensed themes, we get the small and biggest sets at a 1:1 euro/dollar conversion, (which I understand and accept because of economic motifs), but the midrange sets have realy insane price tags..

A wonderful review! The effort you have put into outlying contents of each bag, photoshopping, comparing LEGO to movie pictures and sufficient expression of your thoughts in writing is simply fantastic. Thank you!

I've actually been meaning to say that also, I guess I should have been more clear in my ratings. You are right and I totally agree with you, the set elements by themselves are highly playable and would surely be enjoyable for the kiddos.

That's quite a unusual way to use this set - a undead zombie stagecoach - nice.:grin:

Hhmm, interesting point. Here I was assuming that all sets in a licensed theme, regardless of size, have the same % mark-up per location/country, so it's quite surprising to learn that "mid-sized/mid-range" sets have higher mark-ups than smaller/larger sets. I assume TLG have the data of consumer behavior and probably the finding was that midsized sets are the most sellable in terms of sales volume and profit so that may be the reason for the high pricing of this set. But still it's unfortunate that many want to buy this great set but the ridiculous high price prohibits them from doing so. :sceptic:

Thank you very much! I LOL'd at the "outlaying of the contents of each bag", as that is really time-consuming that sometimes I wonder why I keep on doing it. Anyways, your kind words are very much appreciated, thank you once again. :sweet:

Absolutely great review! How long did it take you in total?

The set is really sweet, despite it's gigantic size compared to minifigs. But the price in EU is just a little too much in my book so I skip. If I get something from LR, it'll be probably be the Mine /Cavalry combo.

This is THE Lone Ranger set to get in my opinion. However, I don't think I'm going to be able to pick it up between Lord of the Rings and Superheroes. I'll try though, your review confirmed my thoughts about the set.

Thanks! It took me probably my whole weekend (Sat & Sun) to take the pics, post-edit and compose the review.

Additional:

To fix the glaring oversized problem of the stagecoach, I was able to make some minor modifications that significantly improved the overall size and proportions of this stagecoach. Here is the link to the topic. :classic:

Just bought this set today in the US, and my box was corrected to reflect the actual minifigures included in the set. It makes me wonder how big of a run they did before fixing it, and it's interesting that they fixed it at all, since there are other errors I can recall that never got fixed. My set still came with an extra brown fedora and red bandana anyway.

This model is ridiculously big; the horses pulling it look miniscule in comparison, but regardless it's very pretty and the minifigure lineup is superb. I guess it's standard for LEGO to go all out designing unique figs for these movie licenses (PoP, Pirates), but it still amazes me that we get unique designs even for the (probably) throwaway bad guys.

Great review. I finally got around to picking this set up the other day and it was every bit as impressive as I had thought it would be. The 29.99 price in the US is great considering the size of the set and the amount of amazing figs included.

I did get lucky and had an extra brown cowboy hat and an extra red bandana in my first bag which was a nice bonus.

Great review..The set has great figures probably the best in the whole lone ranger series.. but I have a problem with the stage coaches proportions. The wheels are larger than a person. The first step to get into the carriage is chest height.. and when you stand on the first step, the floor of the carriage is at eye height. Now i might be wrong but that might seem a tad difficult for someone to get into the carriage.

Maybe because since this is part of a license and TLG had to correct the error as part of their obligation to the Disney license (?). Good thing the correction was made and lucky for the new buyers who'll get extra pieces.

The best part of the set is that the bandits have no flesh on their torsos which means I can switch them to yellow. Win!

Someone also pointed this out in my Cavalry Builder Set review with the cavalry soldiers' torsos not having flesh prints, so intentional move or not by the designers, the flexibility of usage of these parts is certainly most welcome.

Yeah the stagecoach's size is the main issue of this set as have been pointed out countless times. I understand the designers' perspective of choosing stability, functionality, and overall aesthetics and compromising the relative proportion with minifigs. The quick fix to address the size issue is to downgrade the wheels into their next smaller sizes, or you could modify the whole stagecoach altogether to make it more minifig-scale-accurate like in the mod that I did.

To resolve the whole bottom step issue you could take a normal flat square 4 stud panel and stick it half under the step then put a smooth 2 stud across panel on top of the half sticking out. Quite simple and would probably work!
