the_knucklehead Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Hi there Eurobricks Community. I have just recently got back into Lego after about 20 years. It happened because of my daughter who really liked the Friends series. While looking at the sets online I ran across some amazing MOCs and wanted to try my hand. I am most interested in Star Wars (have been a fan of the books and movies all my life) and city/town themes. We only have a couple sets so far, but I am itching to get rolling. What is the best way to build up enough bricks for larger MOCs? Sets seem the obvious route, but seem prohibitive as the pieces are more purpose selected for the set. I have also heard warnings of buying bulk lots from E-Bay as users have warned that they are often picked over by collectors first. I plan on hitting garage sales once warmer weather comes and have poked around a few second hand stores, but have not found much. Any tips would be very much appreciated. Quote
Leo604 Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Welcome to Eurobricks; as for buying bricks you could try Bricklink. Or if you have any official Lego stores in Ohio you could get them from Pick-a-Brick there. Good luck! Quote
CorneliusMurdock Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 There's a Lego store at Easton where you can try the pick-a-brick wall. There aren't always the most useful pieces but if you're just starting out, it's a nice way to get a few pieces. Looking for sets on clearance is another good way. But mostly just keep getting the sets you like and build off of them is an excellent way to start. Once you get a feel for what you want to do in a MOC, you can order specific pieces off of Bricklink. I should warn you, though, bricklink can become an expensive habit. Quote
Brickington Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 GO Buckeyes! Welcome to Eurobricks! Quote
indigobox Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Hello and welcome. I have found the best way to buy spare bricks I need is through bricklink also. If you find the part numbers you fancy you can search or look by colour. Many an hour can be wasted :) Quote
the_knucklehead Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 I guess my current predicament is that there are not specific bricks I am looking for as I do not currently have much of a collection as a base. Only two Friends sets that were purchased for my daughter and I to build together. I think I will need to keep an eye out for sales on Amazon and at other retail outlets until garage sale season. Once I build a collection base I will be able to say I need x number of a certain piece for the design I want to make. Quote
Str0ngbad Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 If it's just pieces in general you're after, you might try searching ebay listings for 'Lego no minifigure'. Often, people will sell sets that they bought for the figures and these sets can be bought for much less. If you're also wanting to collect figures then this is clearly a bad idea but by buying just the bricks you can get a lot more pieces for your money. Hope this helps but either way, I'm glad you're here and I hope you can get started soon. Quote
the_knucklehead Posted February 19, 2013 Author Posted February 19, 2013 Amazing! Thank you for the tip. I had been going through bricklink looking at used sets also. Looks like there are some really good deals on ebay for the sets with no minifigs. Quote
