otpi Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 (edited) Last year I caved in and bought my first two Technic sets in about a decade. The nxt and the 8043 excavator. Having kids is a great excuse (4yo is about the time one should start playing with nxt's, right?). Guess I'm back in the lego fun-zone. And Technic has come a long way since my days. I'd love to try my hands building a trail truck. Only one problem. I'm sorely lacking parts. So, 2012 went on without further lego adventures. Well back to the 8070; though I'd buy my brother an techninc car for his b-day. He has a kid of his own now, so he needs more toys. Though the accompanying choking hazard is probably his main concern right now... Anyway, it was his gift. Walking into the local toys'r'us I see the 8070 with a 40% discount. The discount put it at the same price as the "42006 Material Handler". What to do-- Obviously they had a whole pallet of them 8070 boxes left after what I assume was a botched Christmas sale, and since it's discontinued, they can't have them lying around. Being a nice person I should help So now I finally have lots of Technic pieces. Now I just need to get the crawler (or maybe two), and some xl motors, and... *hurr-thurr* And yes, Hi! /otpi addicted again Edited January 28, 2013 by otpi Quote
Lauris Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Welcome to EB and have a nice stay here! :) Quote
Soluzar Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Having kids probably is a good excuse for buying more LEGO in general. :D Personally I don't have kids so can't justify the price of Mindstorms, or multiple copies of a single set, hehe. The 8070 and 8043 seem like a good foundation for a collection, to me. Both are great parts packs, in addition to the fun of building them to begin with. Both were among the sets I picked up upon recently emerging from my dark age. That's a damn fine price for the 8070. I paid less than RRP, but still more than you did! Quote
bord4kop Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Hi and welcome! There are sure a lot more awful things than having four 8070 's Quote
SheepEater Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 The 8070 is a good set, although I would have prefered the gearbox to be used to shift gears, and the motor to drive the engine. Quote
Jim Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Hi, Welcome to EB. That's always a strange thing. When sets should go up in price, the local retailer gives a discount because they are end of line. They should know better I once purchased the Ferrari F1 1:8 for 80 euros, while it had a retail price around 140. Anyway, the 8070 is a great set, with lots of useful parts for building cars....obviously Quote

There are many ways to justify silly purchases :) , e.g.: - one is a gift - one is for me - one for the kid (ok, it's my lego, but he can play with it) - one for the good deal - I really need the parts. - It's less than a night out. - I wont get hung over from this. - The look on a kids face when he comes home to a stack of lego boxes this size - The very different look on your wifes face... which country are you in? Not the UK, further north and east. There are sure a lot more awful things than having four 8070 's There sure is :) Hi, Welcome to EB. That's always a strange thing. Which was of course part of my reason for buying, and that it was a good deal (it was actually cheaper than the cheapest used set on bricklink that same day). Thanks for all the welcomes ;) Edited January 29, 2013 by otpi Quote
Ristaaf Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 My guess is that you are in sweden, I noticed the discount on this set at TRU too. The actual price after the discount btw is 699 SEK which at the time of writing equals 81 EUR. It is a good price even though the original price is high (1199SEK=139EUR) even so compared to the cheapest I've seen this set in sweden (Webhallen 979SEK=114EUR) it is a good price. I almost considered buying a couple of these and save unopened a year or two and then sell for probably quite a profit. Quote
Traktor Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I guess he is in Norway, picked up 2 of them myself at 40% discount. I paid 600 kr which equals to 110 dollars, so still not that cheap, but much better than the original price of 1000 kr, and in some places even 1100 kr. Quote
kieran Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Thanks, looks like its on sale all over, not seen it in the UK yet Quote
D3K Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Will pick one or two up if I can get out to the TRU here outside Bergen! Not that big a fan of the model, but great for parts for making other cars!:-) Quote
