jimmynick Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 (edited) The Winter Palace is possibly the most recognizable building of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Wikipedia has a good entry about it. This is a view of the facade that I worked from in building my modular version. It's a beautiful building, so first I tried to build a representation of it that would fit into a modular city. That effort is this. It looks nice enough, but isn't very palatial. So I took design cues I developed in the prototype and made three modules: a corner section, a straight section and a section with arches, as in the middle of the reference photo. The modules are open-sided, naturally, so as to allow a continuous interior. The modules themselves are compatible with the Cafe Corner modular standard. Below are pictures of the modules. The intent all along was not to create a perfect model of the Winter Palace, because it has so many weird corners and intersections of corridors. Instead, I wanted to create an easily-rearranged set of parts that can be put together to make something very reminiscent of the actual building. This is an example that numbers approximately 21,000 pieces. In retrospect, sand green is a better colour than sand blue for the outside of the palace, but sand green itself is a little dark. Oh well. I can't upload files of the modules because they're too big all together. See more pictures of this project at Flickr. I hope you liked my model of the Winter Palace! Thanks for reading! Kristel Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 Wow, this building looks amazing! It would be even more impressive in real bricks, but at 21,000 bricks that would be quite an investment. I think the section with the arches would work well as a stand alone modular and the straight section provides a nice base for a 16-wide residential building. Quote
Vincent Kessels Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 That are two great designs! The smaller one looks more realistic to be build. The big one (hyper modular building?) is a great idea. You probably also need something like a 'T' module and an end module for more variation. A lot of modules makes displaying much more fun, because every time you have a different building. My village is also different at every event. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 That is impressive, to say the least. I almost feel overwhelmed with the size, so I'm glad it isn't in real bricks. But I do agree the middle section by itself would look great as a modular for a city layout. Keep up the great work. Quote
