ghoulrealm Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 I was going to try some sort of a brickbuild of Davy, but thanks to Lord Admiral Helden Ravensdorn I was inspired to create this first. I used a darth sidious head, a tri cornered hat, and the captain redbeard body. I smooshed clay all over it, and this was the result. I used sculpy but it is extremely brittle. I already had to glue him back together, and I am very careful at handling small fragilies. Quote
Lord Admiral Helden Ravensdorn Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 Very well done, mate! Better then I thought possible with sculpey :) Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 15, 2007 Governor Posted January 15, 2007 The pictures don't seem to be working for me. I've go into the post and extracted the direct hyperlink to them and then copy & pasted them into a browser but they just won't load. Quote
ghoulrealm Posted January 15, 2007 Author Posted January 15, 2007 I will add them to brickshelf then. not sure if I'm going to add a claw peg leg. I need to do something about the color mismacth of the hands as well When my IPS is working, it is quicker and easier to post images from my server. This also results in Eurobricks exclusive views of my mocs :) I will likely add all my mocs images to brickself later. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 They appear to be working now so maybe the jotdot.net server was down when I first checked this thread. Anyways, what substance is the head and claw made from? Quote
Scouty Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 The material is sculptey. Nice Fig! Really like it. You can cut the "stud sole" of the peg leg to make it like that. Quote
Lord Admiral Helden Ravensdorn Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Wouldnt it be too short then? Quote
ghoulrealm Posted January 16, 2007 Author Posted January 16, 2007 I thought about it. To put a big blob of red clay on it in clawed form, and restore balance to the foot, I will. *yoda* Quote

ghoulrealm Posted January 16, 2007 Author Posted January 16, 2007 You mean Sculpey? You got it! I like the texture and firmness when sculpting small detailed structures. Though as I stated, it doesn't hold up well to handling, especially when shaped and hardened into small detailed structures. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 So what you're saying Mr Ghoulrealm is Sculpey is delicate and easily damaged? I'm curious to know because I want to make miniatures (specifically megaliths) which I'll later composite with live footage, however I'm uncertain what medium to construct them out of. Quote

It could work well for megaliths. Just not very durable for anything under a centimeters/ half inch. Even if it was larger, it would likely break in two if it say... fell off a table on a hard floor. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 I'd be sure to be careful enough not to drop it from any height! However, you mentioned it doesn't hold up well to handling and I may be inscribing glyphs onto the megaliths so what I don't want is the material crumbling away when I'm putting it into position. It's not that bad. It doesn't crumble. but if you have a strand as small as my davy's tentacle it with break off quite easily It should hold up well for megaliths, and here's what I would do in that case; 1. I would try to make a few glyphs in a sheet of flattened (but thicker than centimeter) soft sculpy. 2. bake the sheet and cool 3. make some balls about the size of the glyphs and press them into each glyph. 4. make a handle of the top of each ball ( a cylyndrical type structure) 5. pull them from the sheet. 6. cut off the excess from around the base of the negative mold 7. bake and cool these forms 8. use them to press glyphs into your megaliths.... and all your remaining clay as well and maybe sugar cookies too X-D Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 That's good advice Mr Ghoulrealm, you've obviously used this stuff before. But how much does it cost and what quantities does it come in? Quote
ghoulrealm Posted January 16, 2007 Author Posted January 16, 2007 But how much does it cost and what quantities does it come in? when I acquired mine 4 years ago (no that's not why it's brittle,) it was about 8$ US per pound. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 I assume one could obtain it (or a similar product) from most reputable art supply stores, but is there any particular store you recommend? Quote
ghoulrealm Posted January 16, 2007 Author Posted January 16, 2007 I knew you'ld ask that! In my area the hobby stores are Hobby Lobby, Michaels Arts & Crafts Store, and they use to sell it at Walmart. I don't usually order from the internet, but you could, if you want to search for it that way. Fimo is a similar product. It requires more needing and may be more durable. However, I find that after needing it it is too viscous or at least doesn't support it's self well. The sculptuers I usually make are too small for armeture support. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 Internet you say? Hmmm... Sculpey appears to be based in Illinois which mean I cannot find it in local stores anyway, but no doubt there's a similar product. You've been a great help Mr Ghoulrealm, I'll have a ponder about this over the next few weeks. In the mean time I'll pay close attention to the work you post here. Quote
