Berry Syedow Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 I don't believe we've had this poll yet, so the top pick should surely be intriguing... The variety of Castle helmets remained rather limited up until the 90's when an outburst of new molds sprang up and continued into the 2000's. Some molds have brought tears of joy while others have only brought tears. Which type of metallic helmet do you history buffs prefer? To clarify what name goes with what helmet: Flared Helmet "Non"-Flared Helmet Grilled Helmet Dragon Master's Helmet Samurai Helmet "Scorpion" Helmet Viking Helmet Crown "Bat" Helmet Kettle Helmet EDIT: Erp, the poll didn't show up! Strange... I don't suppose one of the MODs could fix it, eh? Quote
oo7 Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Nice topic, Mr. Syedow! Although for me I like no pole as I have several favorites. Since I have nothing else better to do right now, here's my full-fletched analysis; Flared Helmet - I like it; fairly simple, nice looking, very realistic. *sweet* "Non"-Flared Helmet - Probably just as realistic as the flared helmet but I like the look of the flared one a little bit better for no logical reason. :-) Grilled Helmet - I don't like this one very much. I like the more recent two piece one, as this one cannot slide and from what I can tell the 'openings' are too big. |-/ Crown - I love the chromey goodness! It's the only cranial attire fit for a king, so it's good for me! ;-) Dragon Master's Helmet - I didn't like this Medieval line itself but these helmets are good for ancient Greeks or Romans or for elaborate elven-esque helmets like from LOTR. Although I hate it with all the plumes in it. :-) Samurai Helmet - Looks good on Samurais! *y* "Bat" Helmet - Ugh, so stupid. It's OK for a few LOTR Orcs but that's it. :-| Kettle Helmet - Nice. It looks good on a crossbow soldier, the use originally intended but it also looks nice as a Roman Gladiator. *sweet* "Scorpion" Helmet - I like it, especially in the nice speckled metal color. *y* Viking Helmet - It's satisfactory for Vikings as few people criticize it's historical innacuracy, but I have trouble using it for anything else as I hate the look of the empty holes. *sad* (Although I love the horns by themselves in MOCs) Edit; Now that you have the pole up, I decided to vote for the flared helmet after much hesitation. ApophisV Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Huh, I hope that works now, took me several tries... *wacko* Quote
pietje Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 I love the scorpion helmet *knight* *knight* *knight* X-D Quote
ImperialJohn Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Flared Helmet is soooooooo classic. I would choose this anytime. Quote
madoka Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 The flared helmet is the best for fit, look, classic goodness. I buy them buy the hundreds to equip my armies. The kettle helmet is a very close second. I wish they were cheaper and available in black. I dislike the dragon master's helm due to poor fit. They tend to fall off easily. But clearly the worst is the absymal bat lord's helmet. FUGLY! Quote
oo7 Posted December 27, 2006 Posted December 27, 2006 Well said, what a good first post. *y* I forgot to mention, I am normaly against minifig customization but that bat-lord helmet is so stupid if I had one I would cut off the wings and use it as a great looking and historically accurate Viking helmet! Quote
phoinix Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 flared helmet! the classic choice! and its making a come back with the new castle theme!!! Quote
DARKspawn Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 Your missing my two favorite helms :( - the newer visored helm as shown in my avatar & the original visored helm (my fav by far) Quote
blueandwhite Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 Kettle helm. The flared and "non"-flared helmets are quite nice, but are far too common. For me, the Kettle helm stands out for its distinct shape and design. It works nicely with a variety of factions, and adds a little variety to any army. I would love to see this one in black, as I feel it would fit in well with my BFs. Quote
PSPguy Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 WOW! I didnt know there were so many people who hate the bat helm. I for one like it. :-P Quote
alex54 Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 I'm an old school afolc, so myvote goes to the flared helmet, even if I like other ones too (like scorpion, kettle and dragon master helmets) Quote
Wobo Ihi Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 I forgot to mention, I am normaly against minifig customization but that bat-lord helmet is so stupid if I had one I would cut off the wings and use it as a great looking and historically accurate Viking helmet! Hey... good idea. ;-) As for me, I like all the helmets; but my vote goes to the flared one. Quote
Vaders_son Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 I voted for the "non"-flared helmet because I just like it's simple but nice design. It looks good with almost every kind of soldier unlike others like the ninja helmet. I totally dislike the bat helmet because it is just ugly and not of any use I think. Vaders_son Quote
natelite Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 i think all of them have their uses, except for the dragon and bat helmets. those are buttright ugly and have no historical accuracy. i really like the kettle...but i voted for scorpion as it is easy to blend into an army and is visually stunning and accurate. most helmets were designed to protect as much of the head as possible, ie eye cutouts are favored over a middle nose piece (which actually detracts from a proper human vision). Quote
hewkii9 Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 I voted Scorpion Helmet. It's the type I have most of, and looks great. Plus it's pretty versatile. I would have voted Flared, but I only have two [from BaTP], and so I don't have that many uses for them yet. Quote
mrts Posted December 28, 2006 Posted December 28, 2006 Well i voted Scorpion too. I also like the Flared though, but the scorpion slightly more... :-) Quote
Berry Syedow Posted December 28, 2006 Author Posted December 28, 2006 Thank you for fixing the poll Apo; and thank you for providing such a lovely visual aid! Nice topic, Mr. Syedow! Edit; Now that you have the pole up, I decided to vote for the flared helmet after much hesitation. 007, nice job on condensing the highlights of each helmet in one fell swoop. People probably prefer the flared helmet over its cousin because its curves make it appear more elegant. I love seeing these guys on black falcons, in large numbers. They also look pretty snazzy in dark grey on crusaders (red/yellow color scheme). A grilled visor would be a good replacement for our current grilled helmet, but I actually like these guys quite a bit; especially in dark grey. I pretty much agree with the rest of your assessments. *y* The kettle helmet is a very close second. I wish they were cheaper and available in black.I dislike the dragon master's helm due to poor fit. They tend to fall off easily. But clearly the worst is the absymal bat lord's helmet. FUGLY! Yes, a black kettle helmet would be spectacular! Baby blue on the other hand... :-P What annoys me the most about new helmet molds is the incomplete circular indentation used to secure the helmet. It seems older helmets that use the complete indentation always lock on securely; sometimes too securely. :-P The "Scorpion" Helmet overcame that flaw, thank goodness. I just really wish TLC would stop churning out flimsy helmets. Your missing my two favorite helms :( - the newer visored helm as shown in my avatar & the original visored helm (my fav by far) Avast, they be visors! Although they would make lovely candidates for a Quote
Starwars4J Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 I use quickedit all the time and have no problems. Unfortunately I cannot vote here, as well...my favorite helms are not grouped into one :-P The flared helm, and the bullet helm (aka archer's helm) both find a use in the same armies. The bullet helm is designed to work better for archers, and considering the open faceplate is a good choice for them. The flared helms are more for footsoldiers, and the famed pointed visor on a plain old round helmet work best for knights. I wish I could choose among them, but they all serve different roles in the same army :-/ Quote
Capn Frank Posted December 29, 2006 Posted December 29, 2006 I like the classic "non-flared" and flared and grilled about equally. I love classic castle. *wub* the kettle is really neato too. Quote

Sir Dillon Posted January 3, 2007 Posted January 3, 2007 This is a neat idea for a poll. :-) For me, it's a tie between the flared helm and the kettle helm, so I didn't vote. While not my favorite, I like the dragon helms, I was a little surprised that so many here seem to dislike them very much... Quote
Mike F Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 I chose grilled helmet (3) because it looks nice and has lots of protection with the visor. Quote
SWMAN Posted March 12, 2007 Posted March 12, 2007 Love the flared helmet. It is classic, and can be used for any troops. I use it a ton. Quote
Norrington Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Um... Exscuse me but in the example image in the first post the flared helmet is green and the bullet is purple. Are they immiations or are they special peices only avalible in billund? Quote
