Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 Who gave you the Caribbean Clipper and Black Seas Barracuda for Christmas, Mr Assamite? Was it someone else or was this one of those Christmas presents from "self"? Quote

Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 Ahhhhh... 15 years ago... The good old days! I remember the biggest set I got given 15 years was 6270 Forbidden Island (although it was called Shark Island here). Not fortunate enough to get something as a big as a Black Seas Barracuda or Caribbean Clipper. Quote

Not fortunate enough to get something as a big as a Black Seas Barracuda or Caribbean Clipper. These were the last sets I got before my Dark Age. Twas compensation for living in Tom Price W.A., it's a little mining town 1600 km north of Perth. Good money but no life. Another interesting point about this set is that is first generation pirates and really holds it own when compared with the later sets. CM Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 Could you elaborate upon what you mean by "really holds it own when compared with the later sets"? Firstly could you clarify what you mean by "later sets"? Sets released in the later years of the pirate theme (i.e. 96 to 97) or do you mean the sets from all themes which have been released in the past few years? Quote

I got for my birthday Skull's Eye Schooner and I was so surprised because I asked for Renegade Runner :-D Was It about 12years ago? anyway my older brother found it..it was on sale and it was only 300marks!(about 50-60 dollars, 45-50euros) we had different currency back then :-P That was the the best birthday gift ever *y* and just two weeks ago I bought BSB for 55Euros, In top condition with Instructions. It was a good buy I think... Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 Asking for a Renegade Runner and Skulls Eye Schooner must have been one of the best surprises ever! If I recall correctly those two vessels were on the market from 1993 to 1995 so 12 years seems about right. Europe seems to enjoy much better prices for Pirate LEGO sold on eBay, just look at the price for latest Australian Skulls Eye Schooner eBay Auction... Quote

Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 Personally I think the Caribbean Clipper is the least of the non-Pirate ships. In 1996 we did witness a drastic change in set design (I.e. piece count was reduced significantly so structural concepts weren't fully resolved) and affected the outcome of the Imperial Flagship's design, however I still prefer it over the Caribbean Clipper. I always thought IMPERIAL flagship was released in 1992 or 1993 and ARMADA flagship in 1996, Am I right? so you must be talking about Armada flagship.. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted January 16, 2007 Governor Posted January 16, 2007 Yes you are absolutely correct! I think I've spent too much time posting and now I'm getting my ships confused. Je suis incomp Quote
Assamite Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I meant against even the later pirate/armada/soldier/IG ships this still looks pretty good.CM Also I should point out this is an overall view of the set design. The pirate sets are all pretty good, even the much maligned islanders (I like them). If you look at another theme, such as Space or Castle, the subthemes are very diverse in quality. Some of the early grey castles are okay, but the later ones like the Black Falcon Fortress & Guarded Inn are steps beyond in deisgn. Space on the other hand has strong Classics like the Galaxy Explorer series, with some very weak themes such as UFO, Life On Mars etc. Back on topic this set is called the Governor's Ship "Sea Hawk" in Australia. Col. Whipstick Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Great Review I bought myself one in superb condition in a perfect box without a scratch and got it for about 35 Pounds but the big bonus was that the dealer didn't know the contents as he had obviously purchased it off someone else so when it arrived I got a few extra soldier minifigs and boats... Bargain of my lego life, my Caribbean Clipper... :) I first saw my friend's one back in 1990 and he first introduced me to lego pirates but by the time i got into the collecting i focused on Imperial Guards as opposed to Soldiers and only now am I making some small gains in the Men-In-Blue department. Thanks. I didn't rate this set a 5, but rather a 4 (I think). I don't think it was Lego's flagship of the pirate theme, but it is a nice set. I really like the colors and the figs. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted February 13, 2007 Governor Posted February 13, 2007 Ok lads! Any last comments for the Caribbean Clipper before this Pictorial Review is archived? The next review is coming you see! Quote

Governor Mister Phes Posted February 13, 2007 Governor Posted February 13, 2007 Because pictures of the set were taken last week and I made CG backgrounds for two of them a couple of days ago... This set is going to surprise everyone... ;-) Quote

Dukesc Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 5/5 This is a great ship. She is the largest of the non-pirate. I am not a big fan of how the rigging comes into the middle of the ship rather than the sides, but hey it Quote
Tully Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 I like it to, and once I expaned mine with 2 sets, and it was big. I might include a picture later. Quote
Capn Frank Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 5/5 Granted i don't like the rigging *n* , but it does come with a lot of good pieces *y* . Things that i really like that it comes w/ include: Yellow bird! 4 blue imperials *y* (one of which is an admiral) the two flags and the 3 sails 2 cannon. I think this is really good being that it's almost the first pirate ship TLG ever made. P Quote
simonwillems Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 While browsing this thread I found out that I hadn't been posting here about this great ship. I voted 5/5, this is a true classic and if you don't own this ship: shame on you!! It may look a bit strange, with that high main mast and shorter back mast, but when you have this ship on display it looks just right. And extra sail is easily fixed in the 6280 way. My favourite viewingpoint is the back of the ship with the two windows and the main mast towering behind them. I was extremely lucky to find this ship brandnew in the back of a German toystore in the city of Pruem a few years ago. I love Germany! My copy still looks fresh and the sails are just as crisp as lego intended them in 1989. *y* Quote
Dreamweb Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 A very good review. I really admire your sails - they look like new! Mine are worn quite a lot. When I got it for Christmas in 1989 or 1990, it was the biggest set I had at the time. I remember I was disappointed with the number of minifigs - I was expecting more :) I was also expecting 4 cannons, not 2... I also didn't like - and still don't - the fact that the cabin has no door or wall and there's no stairs or ladder leading to the brigde. The rigging in the middle isn't that realistic but doesn't look that bad! I still give it a 5/5, for it's a true Lego classic, and despite all those things it looks just great - I especially like the yellow bird, the sails and the back of the cabin with windows. And it has one of the best Lego minifigs I've seen - Governor Broadside who comes only in one other set aside from this one. I have one complete - the one mentioned above - and one almost complete, but they are both disassembled and are parts of MOCs right now :) Quote
