Hi, Ive tried pushing in the two tabs with small screwdriver/tweezers but I cant seem to get it open I think its because when I push one in the other one releases and even if I did have them pushed in how would I then pull the top axle bit out?

Is there a better tool I can use or something?

here is the part

Pushing in and down both tabs at the same time should do it. There's nothing else holding it together. If you are finding it difficult it might help to fix the axle hole end securely to a model/MOC to give you both hands free.

No I still can't do it

You are not alone. I have destroyed several shocks trying to get the rod out. I even a special tool which uses an assembly of other shocks to put tension on the one I'm taking apart so I can keep my hands free to depress the tabs. It didn't help. Good luck. :sceptic:

You need a pair of pliers that cut in to push both tabs at the same time. If you have old-school wire strippers they should do it. Failing that, I'd use a nail in a bit of wood to push one side, and locate that by drilling a hole for a Lego axle at just the right point. Then push another nail in from the top. I have taken them apart, just not for a few years. From memory I replaced "piece of wood" with my soldering stand that has various vices and clampy things, but it was just "hold an axle here, and a nail there".

The pliers I'm thinking of look like this: http://www.toolstop.co.uk/stanley-0-84-010-vde-wire-strip-plier-160mm-p22902 (image via google image search, no recommendation intended)
