SNIPE Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 (edited) Hi, today I had another crack at trying to design my super car and found a good way to use the differential I wanted while keeping the diff and housing thin to make room for the bodywork. I managed to get the diff and the housing in a 3L by 5L space, I also noticed that it ran very smooth and even had spin back when you held one of the sides. I also noticed that it could have three gears on this space, two would be on the differential and the third is on the axle. The usual car setup uses front, rear, and center diffs which the gearbox is connected to the centre diff,on this lego model, there is a small gearbox which connects the rest of the axles containing gears to the three gears on the axle which in two of them are for the diff, the secondary axles, like the main axle can counter rotate half way meaning that the gearbox can apply direct torque to either wheel. There is a gearbox on the front diff and rear diff. Normally the power is split between front and rear wheels and is then split again temporerilly. The secondary axles are split by the yellow sleeve not by another diff. I was playing about with it, and for some reason blew on the largest gear and noticed that it span quite easily, I then blew through the side hole which is extremely close to the gear but allows for air to pass over the teeth and spin it, it span quite fast indeed, I was quite surprised and made a high pitched whistling/whining sound. Here are some pictures of the build without the secondary axle: Here it is with the secondary axle, the gear groups have not been worked on much yet as it was late... I did not have an air tank and compressor to blow air through but it still flys. http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/9875/file6442x.mp4 Note that this whole thing can be made using the Lego unimog set, LDD file is HERE Edited July 2, 2012 by SNIPE Quote
SNIPE Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 Can anybody help give me some designs on a 6 speed gearbox that uses as many gears on one axle as possible, I have three gears already (a 24 tooth, a 16 tooth and another one, the 24 and 16 tooth gear can only spin at the same speed the other gear can counter rotate and spin at a different speed, I need another set of gears above this axle to get different speeds. The 24 and 16 tooth gear are part of the differential case in which the bevel gears are housed. The model needs to be as flat as possible, perhaps one of the grey rings can be raised and axles put under that. Quote
