Ive been looking through recent posts and havent found this anywhere, so i figured i would post it. Forgive me if it has already been posted somewhere else.:)

So CUUSO have their final blog out on guidelines for how to get a better chance of having a succeding project AFTER having collected the 10.000 supporters.

The blog is quite long so i will only leave a link.

Link to CUUSOO official blog.

For me this means that my Doctor Who project and everyone elses who dreamth of LEGO making official Doctor Who have been shot to pieces.

I must admit that i had a slight hope though, since other licenses such as Pirates of the caribbean and Marvel were owned by other companies before LEGO bought them back or got them otherwise.

Some quotes from my project that got my hopes up high again after having found out that a license was already given for Doctor Who merchandise:

Megablock had Pirates of the Caribbean AND Marvel and Lego got them back. Actually Lego had Marvel, then Mega, then Lego.

As long as the IP is not owned by a competitor (My Little Pony, D&D, etc...) it really does not matter. Licenses come and go and often have strange exclusions.

I believe the licence isn't too much of a problem. There are dozens of other companies that produce Marvel superhero toys, yet Lego got the licence for that.

This is not a thread to promote my own project in any way, i have sort of given up on it unfortunately after having read the official statement.

As a sidenote i would like to mention that i found the news here on brick fanatics.

While I can't say for a fact how merchandising rights work, I know in some countries the license is granted based on the type of model, size, type etc. So in Japan, there are temporary licenses given to model builders who sculpt resin models. They are allowed to produce a limited run and sell it at a special convention. Now the same IP is given out to multiple companies. They break it down to the scale of the model and sometimes the theme. Like Macross. A japanese mecha anime. Stuff from previous series are produced by Yamato. Current Anime mecha is produced by Bandai.

Hasbro is different and doesnt think like the Japanese. So they would probabyl have tight control over their IP. Which is probably why they worked on getting KREO made.

Now with regards to CUUSOO I imagine that these legal issues regarding getting a license can be very difficult.

Is it odd that the first two sets were only available in Japan? Why was that?

Anyway trying to get the OK to produce licensed product world wide is very challenging.

The first two sets were exclusive to Japan because Cuusoo itself was first introduced in Japan. It was only after that second project had passed review that Cuusoo was rolled out to the rest of the world.
