SNIPE Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Hi, What was the first set to include either cross axles OR gears, I've checked some sets it seems the 1970 800-1 gear set from the universal building set range was the first set to have gears or the 800-3 Great universal set from the BASIC theme may have included gears too so I am not sure however Im looking for the gear types in a set we know and use more often today. I know the older sets had a fixed axle attached to a modified 3008 with wheel holders but that doesn't count for me as I'm thinking of buying one of these old sets. Some sets with lower numbers such as 6XX can actually be newer than the 700 sets which came out in the 70's so that's another thing that is making it hard for me to search. Quote
JopieK Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Well you could look it up of course... e.g. at brickfactory.info, peeron, etc Quote
KEvron Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 (edited) a cursory glance at bricklink's catalog of gears reveals that.... samsonite sets were produced '65 - '67, expert builder sets '70 - '77, the technic line began in '77. bricklink catalog is your friend. KEvron Edited May 7, 2012 by KEvron Quote
SNIPE Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 (edited) It only searches by year there is hundreds of sets that came out in 1977 the set number does not mean its newer also (not always) I need another way to find it or somebody who knows about them this looks white old for 1977 but I'm still not sure Edited May 7, 2012 by SNIPE Quote
allanp Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Well what kind of gears do you mean? Samsonite, expert builder or technic? Quote
SNIPE Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 (edited) technic gears but not necessarily a technic set as other sets can have technic elements in them. Edited May 7, 2012 by SNIPE Quote
KEvron Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 (edited) It only searches by year searching there at first can seem a little daunting. start at BrickLink. underneath the banner, click on Catalog. under the heading of Browse Catalog Items, click on Parts. scrowl down that window until you get to the Technic, Gear category. there, you'll find a list of all the gears ever produced. click on any entry and it will take you to a page with info on that element; unit weight, years of issue, available colors, etc. there are other links on that page that will tell in which sets the element appears. from there, you can further refine your search; to search by year, click on Summary. allanp Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Well if it's technic gears then it would be the first technic sets released in 1977. By the way, if you go to peeron you can search by part (type "40 tooth gear" in the search feild, then click on the technic one), then you will see a list of all the sets which that part appeared in with their year of release next to their names. allanp Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 (edited) With only 4 sets released that year, I assume they were released at the same time. Blakbirds technicopedia has some great information on this. In evey year he reviews he shows a list of all the new parts released that year. http://technicopedia.com/1977.html Edited May 9, 2012 by allanp Quote
