spzero Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 (edited) No I'm not getting a shed made from Lego, tho that would be great, I'm getting a new shed just for Lego, It will be insulated, sealed and it will have power and an alarm and lots of storage / sorting / display type stuff, its 80 square foot and hopefully gunna get lots of use. I'm not trying to make you all jealous just thought I would share. Also it might get very cold / hot outside any storage tips for extremes of weather, tho in winter I may have a small heater on when im in there. Still strugling with the whole storage and sorting thing tho, I have far too much to just do it by colour or set, theres over 700 mini figs currently and probably a few hundred kilos of bricks, Arrghhh I need to sort, but YEAH I have somewhere to sort Edited March 10, 2012 by spzero Quote
Legogal Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Sounds like a good solution to the storage and sorting problem. There comes a point when it is easy to get overwhelmed by all the Lego one owns. We have run out of space for containers, and don't feel comfortable storing them in our attic where the temps hit 140F on our hot summer days with a dark roof and vents near the top. Much of it is sorted by color; a few sets are stored by their number with most broken down to save space. The thousands of minifigs have mostly been broken down to torsos in separate cases by color, and other body parts stored separately to save space. Once we have a finished basement, it will be easier to access the containers. But yes, one can easily get overwhelmed by all of the parts. Can't tell you how many days I have spent sorting.....maybe 40 days over 20 years of Lego. But that is the only way one can find the parts needed to build anything. Good luck with your new shed and sorting! Quote
Follows Closely Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Not to sound liKe a party pooper, but a "shed" sounds like a horrible idea. Isolated away from everyone in a small 25x25 shed in the back yard. The heat and cod, the moisture, the critters... You can't find any room inside? Quote
Vindicare Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 One of those "Tuff Shed" ones could be good. I've been eyeing one of those at times. I think those handle the elements pretty well. I'm sure in the house would be preferable, but not always an option. Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I thought about using the shed. Back when I was a young lad my father had a model railway in his shed. It was lined and everything but even them it got infested by bugs and 'old crinkled lips' and that could be quite scary at times. You had to try and banish them before going in to play with the trains. I thought about doing out my own shed for a hobby place in general but I have a massive Old Crinkled lips living in it and it requires lots of effort to dislodge everytime I want to go in there. Still, I appreciate that not everyone has room in the house, (Myself included.) I tend to use the conservatory as my hobby room. I would like to do out the attic but we have one of those ones with roof beams going every direction that you have to clamber over so it is not really practical which is a nusiance really. I guess it does depend on the type of shed you get though? I think whatever you do you need to make it secure and try to not make it too well known what you have in there, as they are never as secure as the house itself. Are you going to fitting an alarm system? Whatever happens I wish you all the best with your collecting and if you have a nice City layout with trains etc it would be good to see some pictures once it is up and running. (Minus the bugs and crinkled lips of course!) Quote

spzero Posted March 11, 2012 Author Posted March 11, 2012 Unfortunatley there really is no room in the house, I may have some things in the house on display and some lego for the kids, The shed will be newly built, so there are no criters as yet, it will be sealed where possible to keep wind and bugs out (Tho I'm not sure of the best way to do this, thinking expanding foam if needed and silicone sealant), then it will be insulated and will have an alarm and hidden at the back of the garden, there are two other sheds and a greenhouse for bikes sledges mowers plants pots etc, so this is just mine. Its not perfect, but a lot cheaper than a conservatory or brick built out house, but at the moment with a 8 month old baby I cant get the lego out inside very ofen as like most young children he just puts in in his mouth. I did consider the loft (attic) but its very cramped up there about 4 foot high at the highest point and sorting / storage would be a pain at least the shed is 8 foot high and 6 foot at the lowest point, lots of shelving!! Sir_Basil_Ashton Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Thanks. Why didn't I ever think of a LEGO shed? Another idea to pitch to my wife. Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 (edited) What is an 'old crinkled lip'? The wife? :) Begone from me, O Crinkled Lips, I am Khnum, Lord of Peshnu. wondermonkey Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 (edited) I'd love a shed. LEGO Guy Bri Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 (edited) The right kind of shed would be great. I dream of having a space large enough to accommodate my city collection, as well as, having ample room to reach all areas of the city comfortably. I have no idea how much space I would need for that I'd love a shed. Seems like a nice space to be able to set everything up just the way I'd like. Khnum? Apshai? Nope. I'm too thick, still don't get it!! I believe it's a clever reference to an ancient Egyptian spell, from the Book of the Dead, to repel off insects or beetles... Though I think it was "crooked" (the beetle), not "crinkled". Otherwise it's gotta be the wife Edit: punctuation Edited March 12, 2012 by Lego Guy Bri Quote
happymark Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I am thinking to get a shed too!. but mainly for store LEGO boxes (many of them are not opened.. yes blame me) so are you going to build by yourself? using a kit ? or just a rubbermaid one? It most certainly is not the wife! I do think it sounds like a good idea though if you have the room and facility to make it comfortable. I think I would like to extend the conservatory a bit, but I am not sure I could justify the extra on the mortgage!! Maybe the wife would then be more scary if I tired that on? Still, I hope you have a good time with it and enjoy the LEGO. Remember to post some pictures when it is full and in action! Quote

spzero Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 I'm having it made by a shed company, its a standard design and should be in situ Friday, Will take a bit of time to fill (silicone?) any gaps/crevices snd put in insulation, then its time to sort out shelving, boxes, baseplates, cupboards, desk, chair etc etc, then put lego in!!! Will post some pics when its done tho will prob a week or two till its got any order to it or lego built up! Quote
Vindicare Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Still have no idea what you are talking about. I googled 'asphai' and the best I could tell from pictures is that's it a bug of some sort. I don't that doesn't help much since we all know it's a bug. Either that, or it's a knight, which is unlikely. . It looked kind of beetle like. Quote
fred67 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 its 80 square foot and hopefully gunna get lots of use. Not to sound liKe a party pooper, but a "shed" sounds like a horrible idea. Isolated away from everyone in a small 25x25 shed in the back yard... If it were 25x25 and affordable, I'd be making one myself... wall unit A/C and a space heater... I'd deal with it. But 80 square feet? That's really not that big... I had an office that was 8x10, and while I was happy to have it over a cubicle, it wasn't a whole lot more space. If I were to put enough shelves in to put all my LEGO on (even in boxes - even some removed from boxes to bins to save space), I wouldn't have enough room for a desk to build, let alone a wall where I could sort pieces. Add to that that you are away from your family... one of the reasons I can even do LEGO at all is because I can at least sit there with my wife while she's watching TV, and sometimes build with the kids. I really couldn't do that when my kids were only 8 months... my wife would have been completely insane (or, at least, more-so than she is now). Of course, I'd kill (not really) for enough space for a large LEGO train layout, and that's hopefully coming within the next few years when we move to a larger home with a full basement, but until then I keep it cramped in our bonus room, which doubles as a computer room with desks for both my wife and myself, and also a TV room (we let the kids use the living room). It's a big room, but with all that stuff, I still resort to socking away most of my sets in closets, waiting for the day I have enough room to build them. I can understand, though... if I had absolutely no where else to do it, I might go that route, but it probably would be nothing more than storage, not a place to "work," so in that case, in your (spzero's) position, I'd just store it in the attic. Honestly... I'd think I'd want at least twice as large, but even 50% larger (12x10 or more) would work a lot better. Just my two cents... don't want to be a downer, but then again I have no idea how much LEGO you're talking about either, it could work really well for some people. Quote
