In order to create a MOC from parts (I do not own any pirate ship sets) are the following the only special pieces needed:

hull large stern

hull large bow

hull large center (s)

mast base

mast middle

mast top

I am looking simply buy the special pieces I need off bricklink and forego buying an actual lego set.

Exactly what information do you require from us Captain Schmidt?

Would you like advice on which BrickLink sellers to buy from? Would you like suggestions on how to build your ship?

If that's your shopping list, I'd seriously consider adding some ratlines, a wheel, an anchor and several cannon as well as ab additional mast piece or two (for a bowsprit).

It depends a lot on exactly what you're intending to build, but that would be a good start. Also consider stuff like lattice windows, 2x2 flags (gunport lids), sails, flags and so on.

Ok thanks for the advice Legeaux. To answer Mister Phes, I was asking what special pieces I need (in general) to construct a boat MOC.

It seems you've got most of them listed.

The other specialised piece I foresee you needing are the ball joint pieces used to attach the sails to the masts. If you plan on having sails that is!

It depends on how large you want to have your ship, the parts you listed are higly reccomended. Do you already know what type of ship you want to build? For example, most Brigs had 2 masts, but sloops usually had only 1 mast, while a frigate and bigger had 3 masts (all excluding bowsprits)

If you want to know how much center sections and cannons for the ship types I mentioned I reccomend:

Center Sections.......Masts**...... Cannons

Sloop: 1 or 2....................1.............6 to 12

Schooner: 2.....................2.............12

Brig: 3 or 4......................2.............12 to 20

Corvette*: 4 or 5 .............3.............20 to 32

Frigate: 4 to 6...................3.............20 to 44

Heavy frigate: 6 to 7..........3.............44

Big battleship: 7 to 8..........3.............50 to 70

Ship of the line: 8 to 10......3.............70 to 100

* a corvette or a light frigate is almost the same,

** you probarlay noticed that there are no ships with 4 masts in this table, a ship with 4 masts was quite uncommon

I asume that you won't go for a ship of the line straight away, but I thought it might be useful..

I hope that made any sense.

Mr Tiber, what scale of MOC do you envision? I can't imagine 6 to 12 cannons fitting on a LEGO sized Schooner. The Skulls Eye Schooner which resembled a frigate only had 4 cannon (8 could be accomodated easily however) so therefore a real LEGO Schooner would need to be at least that size to make 12 viable.

You could fit more guns on a ship if you have more than one deck. All of lego's ships have only one gunnery deck, which is usually the bottom of the ship. I began designing a ship that had 22 guns on two decks with only 5 center sections. You could also fit many more guns if you brick-build them out of smaller parts instead of using lego's premolded cannons. You could combine them too, ships often had more than one size of gun.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that you have to use custom cannons for that, but schooners and sloops weren't as heavily armed as bigger ships like frigates, and besides, the lego ships were quite underarmed,

don't you find it strange that a the big BSB is armed the same as the CC? with a small modification, the BSB can easily mount 6 to 8 cannons. And I am talking about the scale of my own MOCs, like the Red Peril, if you look closely you see that she can easily mount 12 custom cannons.

CC being an abbreviation for Carribean Clipper?

If so, The Black Seas Barracuda has 4 cannons while the Caribbean Clipper has 2. But what exactly did you mean by "Don't you find it strange that a the big BSB is armed the same as the CC"? Is it supposed to be armed differently?

That's true that the CC has 2 cannons, but it CAN mount 4 cannons, and the CC is small in comparison to the BSB, so it would be more realistic if it was heavier armed...

Have you got a clear picture of these 12 custom cannons which you can post directly into this thread?

Just like the SES...

I was never entirely sure they were intended to be cannons on the Skulls Eye Schooner.

And what's wrong with that? |-/

Nobody, said there was anything wrong with them, did they?

Sorry maybe I misunderstood you a bit when you said merely... But lots of people here seem not to like custom cannons, but I don't think there is anything wrong with it...

Thanks for the info, that will be very helpful. I am likely going to create a sloop or schooner first.

After I am done with the Acheron, a smaller ship will be the next one, a brig or another schooner...

BTW, if you are not sure about the rigging ,sails and masts, you should take a look in this thread, click on the link and scroll down till you see the small ship drawings with the blue sails.

6 to 12 guns on a schooner?

Im calculating the Cost of buying ship hulls because Im into Pirates again, Woo me! :pir-tongue:

Anywho I couldnt get any Full brown hulls from the BSB.

This is the one I can find, Doesnt look to bad.

6051c01.png

6053c01.png

6054.png (May get longer base)

The problem is I can find 5 Bows but only 2 Sterns, Havent searched for the Base.

I dont wanna take apart these ships to make new ones, Thats why I was hoping to get alot of new ones.

Im trying to say:

1. Where can I get more Hulls from

2. How much does it cost to get the main bits and Bobs of a Ship, Hull, Masts, Sails, cannons? When you create a Ship.

Thanks! :jollyroger:

Have you checked the eBay auctions down there? *points to the bottom of the page*

I paid $10 for a complete RBR hull with 2 extra midsections and $5 for some smaller blue/white hulls. Both auctions came with masts and various parts. If you look around enough, you'll find some deals, I assure you.

After that, you might hit Bricklink to fill in the rest of the individual parts.

There was a Cross Bone Clipper hull just recently. Gone now though.

But hulls do quite frequently pass through there, it's just a matter of checking every day.
