antsiranean Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I have a very important question on a serious matter, so I hope that someone out there might give men an answer. The basic problem is a very complicated one for me: should I get 8258 or 8110? Yes, I know that 8258 won't be for sale much longer, but still it's hard to choose. To make things easier for me: 1) How many differentials does 8258 have, and where are they? Center diff? On all four wheel pairs? 2) How many diffs does 8110 have? Center diff? 3) A very subjective question; which is the most fun to drive around the living room floor? I don't really like the feeling in driving the big wheel loader, 8265, and am wishing for something better, smoother. 4) Which has the best play value? 5) Which is the best build? At least the first two should be easy to answer, so please: a little help? Quote
Blakbird Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 8258 has only one differential and it is between the wheels on the 3rd axle. 8110 has 3 differentials, front, rear, and center. Apart from this simple differentiator, there is no way to choose between these two models. Both are fantastically fun and well built. You are going to have to get both. Quote
allanp Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) Yup, get both If ou absolutely have to get only one, get the 8110. If you can get one now then one later, get the 8258 first cos it won't be around much longer, then get 8110. I do not own 8110 yet (waiting till christmas, it's tradition) but from what I have read, 8110 does not steer that well as standard, but it's easy to improve and there are many places here in this forum that show you how. So, as they come, I would GUESS that 8258 is better to drive around the floor. But with simple modifications, 8110 should be better with it's awesome suspention setup, higher ground clearence and larger wheels, but someone correct me if i'm wrong EDIT: BTW you may like to know that 8258 comes with one of the newer type of diff (only one of the rear axles are connected to the engine), whereas 8110 comes with two of the newer style diff (one in each axle) and one of the older style diff (one in the centre). At least the first two should be easy to answer, so please: a little help? 1) 1 3L diff on the 3rd axle 2) 2 3L diff + 1 4L diff in the middle 3) I'm not a big fan of motorising the models to drive them. So, I won't answer 4) both are great. Pneumatic works fine, but LA's are very interesting (though the 2nd LA is slow). Outriggers are more impressive on 8258. But well, I will say that 8110 has the best play value given that it is modular, and you can easily mod it, and create your own equipments. 5) 8258. Definitely, 8258. PerryMakes Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Yes, I know that 8258 won't be for sale much longer Where in the world is this still for sale? Are you talking about from 3rd party sellers? Or do you have a secret shopping spot that acquires massive inventory to feed the habits of insatiable LEGO freaks worldwide?? :) Quote

Or do you have a secret shopping spot that acquires massive inventory to feed the habits of insatiable LEGO freaks worldwide?? :) It's easy to get hold of in the long country of Sweden, there's at least a dozen web stores that carries it. Is it that hard to get hold of out there in the big, big world? And I think I'll go for 8258. You've all made me att bit wiser on the subject matter, and I think it might be possible for me to buy the truck in november, and still get 8110 for christmas. Or, if that doesn't work, maybe for birthday in spring. Which leads my to another question: is there one or two flagship models every year? Quote

Or do you have a secret shopping spot that acquires massive inventory to feed the habits of insatiable LEGO freaks worldwide?? :) 8258 is still sold by shop.lego.com in the UK. Once Christmas rolls around, it'll probably end up on sale quite cheap just after, and then it'll be gone. That, at least, is what happened with 8297 last year. That's something I've noticed, actually - larger Technic sets have quite a long shelf life in the UK. In my local TRU you can still get the Tractor and Trailer from 2009. Also, I would go with 8258 over 8110. The steering isn't as heavy, and the gearbox is much more complex, but then I've always preferred gears over pneumatics As for your second question, usually we've only had one flagship, which comes in the 2H of the year, but this year we had the Supercar in the 1h as a sort of sub-flagship, and next year we get that Logging Truck. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the recent flagships have been very expensive. Quote

And it's available in some normal stores as well. Also, I would go with 8258 over 8110. The steering isn't as heavy, and the gearbox is much more complex, but then I've always preferred gears over pneumatics I know I am one of the few here, but I am with Wiseman on this one. I think the 8258 is very good looking and was more fun to build than the 8110. The center part of the model with all the gears is magnificent. And, like stated before, the 8110 will still be around for quite some time and the 8258 won't. Edited October 21, 2011 by Gekke Ted Quote
Erik Leppen Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 2) 2 4L diff + 1 3L diff in the middle Other way around Quote
DaddyWhale Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 I think I'm in the minority here. 8258 and 8110 were my first two technic builds. I preferred the 8110 build experience. It seemed more varied and interesting: gears and pneumatics; suspension; all wheel drive. 8110 also has a greater variety of power functions. It is, however, less complex than the 8258. In terms of playability, I also prefer 8110. You can actually grab things using the power function-actuated claw. In 8258, the last steps - lowering or raising the hook, extending the last arm - are manual. Moreover, 8258 can't actually lift all that much weight (perhaps there are mods to fix this). I could lift fairly substantial objects with 8110. Take my advice, though, with a grain of salt. I'm a newbie to Technic! Quote
Jim Posted October 21, 2011 Posted October 21, 2011 (edited) As you can imagine, there is no right or wrong answer to your question. Just go with your own feeling. To be sure; ditching the wife and getting both sets is probably not an option right?! (just kidding of course) Edited October 21, 2011 by Gekke Ted Quote
