DLuders Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) On his website, VKTechnic/ sumwunudontknow posted a of "The Highly Experimental High Speed Tracked Vehicle...an 8-treaded vehicle based on shuttle carriers." "Datasheet Completion Date: 8/20/2011 Power Source: Electric (Power Functions 8878 Rechargeable Battery) Dimensions: 53x39x13 studs Drive motors: 8 M-Motors (one for each track) Total motors: 8 M-Motors, 4 XL-Motors This project came about while I still had one excavator chassis sitting about. After making four of them for fun, they were connected, and the HEHSTV came to be. The model itself is driven by eight M-Motors, one for each track. This gave sufficient torque to drive the model over carpet and even some small obstacles. Steering was achieved through four XL-Motors, coupled in pairs by switches. By flipping the switches, one could switch from crab to normal steering." See 7 pictures on his Flickr photostream. Edited August 29, 2011 by DLuders Quote
P4trickvH Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Looking pretty good so far, wonder what the final set will look like. Quote
Sariel Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 A MOC that has more torque for steering than it has for drive... interesting. Quote
GuiliuG Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 A MOC that has more torque for steering than it has for drive... interesting. Indeed, it's not logical to put Xl motors for steering and only M motors for propulsion. But I don't find interesting to put eight M motors to drive it when you can only put one to have the same effect ( and it's more interessting to build this with one motor for propulsion and gear to connect it with the wheels. Same for the steering. Quote
Jim Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 What a coincidence; I am building kind of the same vehicle with two NXT units and 8 Unimog wheels (instead of 8 tracks). This one looks great! True! I am experimenting with one (or two) motor for driving, one for steering and one switching steering modes. Quote
Nazgarot Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I would think 1 battery would be way to little to make this run good. Have you considered running it on several batteries? It should boost the speed a bit. Quote
Lasse D Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 This is a good start if you want to learn about what need to be done in order to control such a vehicle efficiently. I hope that the creator realizes that the diagonal tracks should be turned and driven in parallel, and that using 4 XL motors for steering is overkill... and that the switch isn't very smart when everything else is remote controlled. Still. Cool proof of concept. Quote
Burf2000 Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 This looks wicked however its far from high speed lol I love the design however I would of used the XL motors for the drive, if you had done direct drive from the motor I believe it would be quite a bit faster (my tank was). Also how many batteries is this running off as I found for max power for a motor, you don't want more than 2 xl's running off a single battery (so probably 4 mediums) Quote
Sokratesz Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 You should re-do the tracks and give it some sort of suspension so it can actually climb obstacles. - Sok. Quote
