tppytel Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 I'm going to be piecing together an 8288 Crawler Crane for myself, because the prices for complete sets out there are pretty insane. All of the pieces are more or less readily available on Bricklink except for the 500cm string packet. The only listing there at the moment is a used packet of string from France for ~$7, which is a little too crazy for me. I'm sure I can find something suitable as a replacement that will cover other Lego needs as well. Bricklink lists it as "Cord, Thin" just like the 50cm packets commonly found in other sets. Is it the same kind of string as that, or something different? Anybody have any tips for finding a suitable replacement? Quote
DLuders Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 (edited) I would just go to a local fabric store and buy some thick thread. All of the nice women congregate there! Edited August 16, 2011 by DLuders Quote

That's basically my plan - either the fabric store or the craft store will have something for me. But I know some Lego string, like the stuff used for boat rigging, is thicker nylon cord of some sort. I'd like to get whatever's correct for the model, even though I'm sure it doesn't matter much in the end. Quote

If you want to match the style, then get any length of LEGO string from any model to use an example. Take that to the store and use it to try to match and buy the right kind. I had to do the same thing. After my divorce I had to put all of my LEGO in storage on short notice and did not have time to pack it or take it apart. It was in a friend's garage. His cat chewed most of the strings off my models including the crawler crane, so I had to replace it all. It was easy to find some that matches though. Quote

dr_spock Posted August 16, 2011 Posted August 16, 2011 I recently bought a big spool of thin black crochet thread for my crane. It's less than $4. Best to go into a store and see and touch rather than buy online. Quote
SNIPE Posted August 17, 2011 Posted August 17, 2011 (edited) That's another thing I can add to my bricklink selling list Edited August 17, 2011 by SNIPE Quote
AlvinB Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Use braided Dacron fishing line. Musky Master works about the best. Quote
