Just my luck as soon as I get into Lego castle, they seemed to have stopped making chess sets for cheap army building. I checked brickset and the past few themes before the current Kingdoms all have chess sets and even the Castle Fantasy had a Tic Tac Toe set.

I was hoping to see one for Lego Kingdoms.

It is a tough time right now if you are trying to build an army. This topic may interest you.

This thread is interesting, too. I'm selling two fantasy era tic-tac-toe sets.

Yes, a great way for army building. Some might suggest that they are the "poor" quality, "made in China" figures, but those tic-tac-toe sets were a great value for the money. It would be interesting to find out how well they sold. There's a lot of complaining that there's not enough dragon knights in Kingdoms. Personally, my collection is all over the place... fantasy, kingdoms, and older, and I don't really care, but I do see the point.

It hurts that you can't get the battlepacks anymore, either. That seems odd for a line like this. I know there were some problems with the first battlepacks - the figures wouldn't grip the weapons well. In the ones I bought, though, the weapons were simply not inserted correctly when they were packed, putting strain on the minifigure hands. I took the weapons out and left them for a while (couple of weeks, although it probably didn't actually take that long) and the figures hold the weapons just fine now. In any event, it would be nice to see new battlepacks.

Lastly, after the battlepacks were discontinued, I decided that Knight's Showdown was a good set to accumulate figures. At $7 MSRP, you get two figures, and they are not the "Chinese" ones. That works out to $3.50/each, whereas a battlepack was $15 for 5, or $3/each (for the cheap ones). When TRU is having a BOGO50% sale (as they are right now), you can actually get them cheaper than $3.50. In fact, it would be four for $12 (because TRU charges $8)... same price at battlepack figures, plus you get all the extra pieces.

The only problem then is lack of variety, but I picked up four sets last BOGO50% at TRU. With Bricklink, you can outfit them differently, so it's not so bad.

Anyway... back on topic, I agree with you, it would be nice to see some new army building sets, either battlepacks or tic-tac-toe/chess. LEGO doesn't really care much about AFOL army builders and, while I can see their point, it's still disappointing. Still, even kids would want battlepacks if they already have a castle or something, right?

My only guess is that now that they have the Lego Games, they don't feel the need to make Chess/TicTacToe sets?

I did buy a bunch of Knight's Showdowns and Prison Carriage Rescues. IIRC 7 of each. I need to get more. I also have 3 Escapes from Dragon's Prison which is more expensive but comes with a horse and horse barding (if you go by bricklink price that piece alone is 5-7 bucks). Plus new dragon knight armor piece and dark pearl helmet.

I have also been buying lots of Ninja Ambushes for skeletons(shame about the silly face) and ninjas and some Ninja Training Outposts for variety in Ninjas.

I will probably order some more of those for sets to get more lion/dragon knights and ninjas/skeletons. Since they all have a ratio of 3.3 to 5 dollars per minifigure. I definitely regret not buying at least 5 of each battlepack.

I was just hoping for a chess set/tictactoe set so I can get the minifigures since they have a ratio of less than 3 dollars per minifigure. I bought the Fairytale and Historic set since its 50 dollars for like 22 minifigures. A little over 2 dollars per minifigure and most of them are castle compatible. Wish they could make something like that but only with castle minfigures.

Forget chess/TTT sets. If you're making a wish list, why bother with sets that have pieces you don't want such as the game board. Lego should bring back the original mini-fig sets:

If BL sellers can make a profit selling minifigs for $2 each, I don't see why Lego cannot. 5-6 figs at $10-$12, I would be buying them all day long.

That would definitely be amazing. Wish I had a time machine so I could buy those awesome sets by the dozens.

I really miss those days, there was a sweet pirate one too, and back in the day, they were only like $6.

Inflation sucks.

I see that the people who responded are armybuilders. A question.

What kind of ratio do you buy of cheap minifigures vs expensive minifigures. I already have lots of Prison Carriage Rescues and Knights Showdown which gave me nice amount of regular soldiers and elite soldiers(in fact like half of my dragon knight army are elite knights lol). And I will get more Escape from Dragon's Prisons for more Dragon Knight Heavy Cavalry. Right now I am thinking about NinjaGo for more ninjas/skeletons.

I am wondering if I should get more Kais/Bonezais or Coles or Jays/Chopovs. I already have like 12 kais/bonezais and 4 coles and 2 jays/chopovs and 1 of other ninjas and skeletons minus the Jay/Cole DX.

Kai/Bonezai being cheapest, cole slightly more expensive, jays/chopovs more expensive, and the rest are much more expensive.

Personally, I hated most of the chess/tic-tac-toe sets, for the same reason most people seem to really like them. They're little more than glorified minifigure packs.

Now the Castle Giant Chess Set, that's where it's at. Artfully-designed chess pieces and an equally-intricate board. My twin brother has attempted to design Kingdoms, Pirates, and Ninjago chess sets on LDD based on this set's template, and I hope one day we can make one of them in real life.
