so if you had to pick from either the 4+ pirate ship or the Durmstrang ship which one would you pick on terms of usefullness?

i ask this as those are the 2 current avaliable pirate ships and if i were to buy one of them i would like to buy the right one. Oh and you cant respond by saying the viking ship *sweet*

The DungStain *ahem* Durmstrang Ship isn't a pirate ship! You must have accidentially put the word "pirate" before "ship" in that sentence.

Anyway, for the benefit of the people here are some pictures:

to be honest I like the crappy 4J ship. Why, well that is because i like certain types of specialized pieces like the skull and cannon flaps. I would also love those red bar fences and the hull itself is wide enough to make a gallleon, as most of the galleons so far look really top heavy. the 4J ship also gets a plus has sails. Now i own the durmstrang ship and love all the little bits and pieces, like the bat, book, quill and blue flame, as well as a few gold pieces. Also what struck me as surprising was the amount of 1x3 plates you get in this set, which is great, however they are in baby blue, a color which only a certain few pieces have been made in. I also dont like the dark bley fence thing on the end, an extremely <insert that tiresome argument> part, yet one that i would actually like to have in brown or reddish brown as on the 4J ship. So out of the two ships using the new hull i would prefer the 4J ship.

Mister Phes what is with all the negativity towards the durmstrang ship. Why do you call it dungstain when it is not even brown?

Even though its not a real pirate ship it can still be used in pirate mocs can it not?

The +4 ship has a better hull but the pieces on in the HP ship are better. For some reason the HP ship looks better in person but it still stinks compared to the ships in the original pirate line, it is WAY out of proportion but it has a very royal and elegant feel that the pirate or imperial ships doesn't have.

I vote HP.

The Durmstrang Ship has more character in my opinion.

It's shape looks better too even though it's a bit crunched up.

The shape of the 4+ ship is just horrible.

It's too ugly to be a pirate ship!

I like the long pennants on the Durmstrang ship, they would be great for a pirate, imperial, or armada ship.

Also, the Durmstrang has regular figs instead of those weird 4+ figs.

And what about the colour of the hull? I think its far too bright for a pirate ship even though the Red Beard Runner also had a yellow red hull, but this Ship Beard's Ship hull is worse! The Imperial Guards could track it would the greatest as easy and it would have a hard time of disappearing into the horizon.

I have the Harry Potter set, and I like the look of it. With some modifications to it, it could become a small unarmed galleon transporting cargo or important diplomats, etc. The 4+ ship looks far too juinorized, has those silly maxifigs, which would only be good spray painted silver or grey and used as a statue in a MOC. The Drumstang is a much better model, all it really needs is sails and a few improvements.

BTW, I read a rumor once of a MOC with the Drumstang, anyone know where I can find it?

Hmmmm... A MOC using the DungStain hull? I'll need to ponder that one.

Mr Jack Can, do you think you'll ever make a piratish MOC using the DungStain hull?

I would love to Phes, but the ship parts count is pretty low right now, I don't think a dino attack helo would do a 17th galleon any justice. I have some ideas, and will take a look at her once I get home, see if anything comes to mind.

Well buying lego is taking a fair chunk out of the ol' student budget, I am defiently not rich enough to go about MOCing a larger ship. Cutters and small bases are pretty much what I can do right now. Give me a year or two, and you never know...

Abosutely! You may have a year or two or event three! But the question is will you still be posting at Eurobricks that long into the future?

I don't think I have enough pieces to produce a larger ship as it seems I'm lacking generic parts. I've got plenty of specialised parts suited for pirates but it seems I've neglected the generic stuff. I'll be sure to rectify that in the near future though.

But first things first! You need to get a digital camera so you can show us these cutters and small bases.

Looking the durmstrang...I have seen a black falcons shield! that is a shield of first casle sets! WOW! Has the original set that shield or is a custom add?

Yup, that sheild is in the durmstrang set and it's the same peice as the sheilds in some of the mid-80s/early-90s castle sets except the back is bluish gray.

The sheild in question is actually from the set, not a custom add. There are two of them infact!

I hope to be posting well into the future, and indeed the first step is a camera. Does anyone know how to take shots with a webcam? I've got one of those kicking around, and could use that in the meantime.

Yes, a webcam is a viable alternative to a digital camera except perhaps not as convenient due to the fact it must remained connected to the computer to take images.

I'm not sure how to do it with your particular web camera but I'm sure we could find out. Step one is to identify what kind of web cam it is...

Am i the only one who is now wondering what the other shield on the Durmstrang ship looks like up close?

Arguing about the figs is silly seeing as both ships come with figs that are incompatible with the pirate theme

makes you wonder though what could the figs in the Durmstrang ship be used for?

So from what ive read thus far people seem to prefer the 4J ship thats just Astounding i might even get one

I suppose the difference between the DungStain and Red Beard's Ship is parts of the mini-figures can possibly be salvaged for piratical uses, whearas the 4+ pirates can't even be used for a pirate theme!

It would be good if we could see a picture of the shield used in the Dungstain ship so if anyone has a picture of it then post it, otherwise someone will be making a visit to Peeron.com very soon.

I think the drumastrang has more usefull pieces, less bulky, and more pieces period..

I also like the the over all appearance of the drumassrang better than 4j as well.

The only usefull parts of the 4j ship that I've found are as follows;

the skull figurehead,

the railings on the stern and crow's nest,

the sails and flags, if you like that pattern,

and the map maybe as a wallmount.

2 shrouds (it's the type of rigging)

1 yellow cup,

1 barrel,

an anchor,

a wench w/ string,

a green parrot, and a monkey :-)

I think the rest of the pieces are way too bulky or unshapely for my use *n*

Yes, this is what I had in mind...

I love to post today I guess...

1)Jack, student loans are for buying lego not buying food! :) unfortunately, that seems to be where alot of mine have gone durring the last couple years.

2)The odd colored minifigs in HP sets are for those pirates that are struck down with scurvey! look how pale and sick they look.

3)I am going to defend the 4j, and wish they still sold it over here (i hear they still sell it in europe? is that true? at the end it was going for like 19 bucks, wish i had one of my student loans when it was that way! lol would have bought like 10 of them instead of one)

First of all, between the Viking Ship (which doesn't make the best pirate ship) the HP ship, and the 4j ship it is all we have in terms of new parts to build with. Thuse instead of dismising it as complete rubbish, i feel it is needs to be reexamined and imagination needs to be pumped into it. Why I think 4j is better? one piece comes to mind, the middle hull piece. Why oh why did HP not have one! i want to make a ship using that hull, but other then some sort of small barque i can not think of how to do it (still waiting to be able to find that ship for cheaper then 50 dollars american) That hull makes it the choice for MOCers out of the two. I don't think every piece on 4j is worthless, i love the new pirate flags (wish i could have got more of the large blue ones too) that was a plus for me... adds variety and different pirate groups to my lego world... anyway they masts work, even if they do not look as good. I wish they wouldnt have changed them but its what we have to work with now. with some refiting the ship doesnt look as aweful... i combined some god awful KK2 pieces from some sort of tower andthis ship and came out with something a little better I think...

I guess in defense of the 4j, there are things you can do with it... the giant hulls on either set are a major drawback, but i guess we could treat it as a "new hull type is sweeping the lego seas" hopefully they will go back to something more managable.

Lastly, before i shut up and stop rambleing, I will confess that i recently bought hull pieces on brickling from this set. I would like to see what a extended hull would look like... if i ever get enough pieces to build the rest of the ship...
