Darth_Ewok Posted July 9, 2006 Author Posted July 9, 2006 Yeah, It is about time that slow little me caught on ;-) (faster than Lego though :-/ ) I am probably going to start searching bricklink and ebay for some pirate stuff but is there any information anywhere about building your own ships? How would you build a good hull, do you have to use the molded hulls that come in the sets? There has to be a pirate fan site with information like that somewhere... Quote
john cleese Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 Megablocks doesnt have a POTC license, they have another crappy theme called Pyrates, of which my idiot brother has every set, hence stimulating the megablocks economy. Anyway i thought it would be neat if they made a ghost ship but the hull was king a like a rib cage, made from those new large white bone pieces found in the vikings theme. Its too hard to explain how you would do it and i dont have the appropriate pieces to demonstrate it. Quote

I would suggest doing it with white slopes for stability purposes, though. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted July 9, 2006 Governor Posted July 9, 2006 Megablocks doesnt have a POTC license. Do your research laddie! There's already 2 threads here saying MegaBloks have a Pirates of the Caribbean Licence and if that's not good enough for you then check out the official MegaBloks Pirates of the Caribbean website. they have another crappy theme called Pyrates, of which my idiot brother has every set, hence stimulating the megablocks economy. Yes, this is correct. They've had this theme since about the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie (I think). My nephew has a few of the sets and like I've said in the past they're no SYSTEM Pirates but I do think they're better than the 4+ Pirate theme do to the detail in the parts. Anyway i thought it would be neat if they made a ghost ship but the hull was king a like a rib cage, made from those new large white bone pieces found in the vikings theme. Its too hard to explain how you would do it and i dont have the appropriate pieces to demonstrate it. You'll just have to buy them :-D Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted July 9, 2006 Governor Posted July 9, 2006 Why wouldn't your brother be getting any of them? I'm uncertain why there is concern with the success of MegaBloks Pyrates and Pirate of the Caribbean sets. Pirate LEGO and the Mega Bloks products are very different products, one has only to look at the box artwork to observe this. Although the average person can't really do this because there is no SYSTEM Pirate LEGO in stores! Maybe the general public is more ignorant than I am but from my perspective Mega Bloks has taken a completely different path from SYSTEM Pirate LEGO. Mega Blok Pirate related sets have far more detail than any LEGO set ever has and its almost like the Mega Blok sets aren't construction toys. But, it all goes back to the issue of parents wanting to buy something to shut their children up without necessarily paying attention to the contents of the box. Quote
john cleese Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 yes phes you make a very good point perhapos by accident, but I think your on to something none the less. It's the parents that are responsible for junioriized sets selling well and megablocks still being able to sell their crap. The parents dont care about the piece counts but rather the prices. megablocks prices i have learned are very cheap $23 for a ship the size of the SES, the only difference is the SES has nearly 900 pieces allowing for hours of mocing fun, where as its crappy megablocks counterpart has a mere 100 allowing for lots of nonsensical stupidity and pretend pirate fights. So its not because children are distracted by video games and such but because those kids parents just buy the cheapest thing available that their kids want. i also have to agree that megablocks isnt a construction toy anymore, however the parents dont seem to realize this and hence it boils down to that they will either buy their child lego or megablocks. Sounds like Megablocks should change there name to Misleadingblocks. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted July 15, 2006 Governor Posted July 15, 2006 To be honest its not me who originally thought of this concept at Eurobricks. I've seen it written in other threads and decided I'd mention here since its relevant to the discussion. Quote
SkaForHire Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 You would think though with the third movie of the POTC franchise hitting the states on memorial day next year (thats like may or something?) That TLG would have some sort of way to cash in on the success of "pirates" as a popular culture reference. I would hope they have a new pirates theme (not the <insert that tiresome argument> stuff either) after christmas (the same release time for exo-force this year) It seems to me that this would be an extrememly good marketing move. It also seems to me to be the last chance for pirates as a theme in the next five years or longer. I thought for sure LEGO would have cashed in this time around with the second movie by making some sort of pirates sets. IF MB prices drive LEGO prices down, all the better. Lego can make a better quality toy and advertise that, parents would like that. and at least in the states, you can charge a bit more then other products if you base your product on a "quality" campaign, and in this case LEGO could advertise quantity over their competitors too. So... if we do not see a new pirate theme based around competing with PTOC Megablocs next year I will be 1)disapointed in TLG's marketing abilities 2)saddened by yet another year without a cool historical theme. Governor Mister Phes Posted July 20, 2006 Governor Posted July 20, 2006 Aren't you already disappointed with The LEGO Companies marketing abilities for other reasons? Quote
AdmMatthew Posted July 20, 2006 Posted July 20, 2006 Has anyone noticed that LEGO's Duplo Pirates sets look strangely similar to the POTC Ships? ...the Black Pearl.. "What ship that was not crewed by the d****** would have black sails?" and.. ...The Flying Dutchman glowing pirate ship? Quote

LOL of course, i guess I meant to say i would be MORE dissapointed Has anyone noticed that LEGO's Duplo Pirates sets look strangely similar to the POTC Ships? ...the Black Pearl.. "What ship that was not crewed by the d****** would have black sails?" and.. ...The Flying Dutchman glowing pirate ship? ok so this is going to be a sick question.... how are the hulls for these??? Usable perhaps for lego creation? I havent bought any duplo... well ever but i used to have a ton when i was a kid and I know back then you could connect them to lego, is that still possible? would be cool if these were posible to use as ships for lego too. doubt it but its still a pipe dream that pirates may come back. "What ship that was not crewed by the d****** would have black sails?" I thought this look rather similiar to the Black Pearl when I first saw it... and.. ...The Flying Dutchman glowing pirate ship? Nothing like the Flying Dutchman in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, although the glowing does tie in with the mythological Flying Dutchman. Quote
