peter_m Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 It sure has been a while since I last built anything - but now it's high time to start again :). I want to buy a decent Technic set. I managed to narrow the choice down to just two of them - Crane Truck (8258) and Unimog (8110) - but I have no idea which one should I pick. I have just few more days to decide, 'cause there are not many 8258s left. My situation looks like this: I have limited founds for just 1 set, because I am planning to get myself Mindstorms for the next christmas and my fiancée won't let me spend more money on 'toys' :P. The set will be first used as a decoration, and then - when I get NXT - I will use parts to build some 'mean machines'. I am evaluating both sets mainly in terms of look and usefulness as a supply of parts. --8258-- + it is available now + looks awesome! + it is huge! (what makes it look awesome ;] - and it comes with great amount of parts) + it has 2 linear actuators, that work well with NXT (that's what I heard...) - it is huge! (my fiancée might get angry :P) - it doesn't have any pneumatic parts, which might be useful (e.g. http://video.designworldonline.com/...) --8110-- + it looks awesome too! + IMHO it looks more 'polished up' than crane truck + it is smaller (won't get on my sweetheart's nerves :P) + it has some nice parts (including pneumatics) - it is smaller :( - it doesn't have actuators - I'd have to wait for it :( I have no idea which one to choose, because I like them both more-less the same. Maybe you could share your own thoughts? Which one is better in your opinion? Why? Thank you in advance :) Quote
DLuders Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 (edited) I would get the 8258 Crane Truck now (while they are still available). It is considered to be one of the best Lego Technic sets ever. You could probably get the 8110 Unimog a year from now, once everyone has reviewed the set and you know exactly what you're getting. Edited March 4, 2011 by DLuders Quote
Blakbird Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 There's not much anyone can do to offer advice on this since no one on the planet actually has 8110 yet. By all accounts, it will be fantastic, but then so is 8258. I don't really think you can make a wrong choice since you will be happy with either. The benefit of buying 8258 is that you won't have a chance to get it later for a reasonable price, but you still have 2 years to buy 8110 if you get the money later. For that reason, I'd go with the crane truck. Quote
dr_spock Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I would go with 8258 too since supplies are limited. I have one and it is great. Quote
Seluryar Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 dont really have a choice if its within the next few days since the unimog doesnt seem to be out yet Quote
Montage Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I would most likely go with 8258 since the Unimog doesnt come out until later on this year. Quote
Ultimario Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Go for 8258, it is one of the best parts packs and one of the best looking and functional models. So it goes together with your future mindstorms perfectly. The unimog will be awesome but will likely only have a fraction of gears and overall technical complexity compared to 8258 because of the linear actuator vs pneumatic actuator difference. And if you miss your chance at getting the 8258 now you'll have to pay through the nose to get it in the future. Quote
Taiphun Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I have 8258 that I bought on eBay, but where's everyone finding these low stock 8258's? Where I am (central Canada) none of the local stores have it, and even fewer carry the big expensive Technic sets. Quote
JunkstyleGio Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 There is absolutely no fun in waiting.... Just get the 8258 cranetruck now. It will give you lots of buildingfun, lots of parts and gears and will get you busy for hours... (And to "feed" your "Lego habit" you'll get the 8110 Unimog anyhow in a few months..) Quote
Aqualize Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Yes, get the 8258. To scavenge it for parts I think it goes better with mindstorms. I have both and while one could have the NXT motors turn the pneumatic valves it won't give so much precision. With the linear actuators you know exactly how many revolutions it takes to fully extend it and unless you drive it too far or have to heavy load (the slip clutch will save your actuator then) you can in the program you write know more or less how much the LA is extended. Then in a year from now your fiance might have accepted your hobby a bit more and then you go out and get the 8110. Here in Sweden the 8258 are still available. I don't visit so many actual stores but many of the online shops carry it in stock. Actually a few weeks ago I was in a store and saw a few 8416: Fork-Lift, a set launched in 2005. The pricetag was a little bit less than what's on bricklink (within EU) but It didn't have any interesting parts so I let it be. Otherwise it is fun to find old sets in stores because they keep or lower their original price, but on bricklink they gain value instead so a few year old set from a store can be a real bargain. davidmull Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I'd get 8258 while u still can,iv got it at Christmas and I'm glad I did now, there getting impossible to get now in Ireland too as it's a 09 model, the unimog will be available for a long time and when u build the truck u will want to buy more sets trust me! Iv a fiancee too and iv bought 7 sets since November last :) Did u not concider buying 8043 by any chance? Personally my favourite set even over 8258! Quote
flyz Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I have 8258 that I bought on eBay, but where's everyone finding these low stock 8258's? Where I am (central Canada) none of the local stores have it, and even fewer carry the big expensive Technic sets. Canada never had it, period. I had to get mine off Bricklink. It was some odd decision that they never released it here and it ticks me off... Quote
Aqualize Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 Yes that's strange. I see at shop@home that 8258 isn't available in the US or Canada, but Sweden (and UK). The first-half 2011 product catalog I'm quite sure it was listed so there should be a big supply here until summer I guess. Quote
Mtx Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 I would also go with the 8258. I think it is awesome set, and when the time comes when you actually want one for your self more than anything else it will be extremely pricey. Then your gal won't be happy... belive me, I know... Quote
nielsvdv Posted March 4, 2011 Posted March 4, 2011 go for the 8258, most reasons are already mentioned. it is a really good set! the xl motor is also very handy. Quote
peter_m Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Thanks for answers! I decided to get 8258 but unfortunately due to some unexpected expenditures I am not going to buy any set now :(. I will be hoping that there will be one 8258 waiting for me ;) Quote
peter_m Posted March 17, 2011 Author Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) Ha! I got it! My own 8258 . I paid $157 (USD) for it. Is it a good price? Edited March 17, 2011 by peter_m Quote
peter_m Posted March 17, 2011 Author Posted March 17, 2011 Congrats. Is that $157 USD? Yes! It was the cheapest I could find in Poland. Quote
backbone Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) Is there any sense? Comparing 8258 which was released in 2009 and Unimog is that unavaiable yet? Buy both, 8258 isn't quite expensive, and unimog will cost something around 190 - this is expensive, but in couple of months you can afford to buy both peter_m - masz konto na lugpolu? :P Edited March 17, 2011 by backbone Quote
paul_delahaye Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 and my fiancée won't let me spend more money on 'toys' :P. New fiancée required tell her their models, not toys and therefore your allowed them Quote
peter_m Posted March 17, 2011 Author Posted March 17, 2011 peter_m - masz konto na lugpolu? :P Jeszcze nie... jeszcze :] New fiancée required tell her their models, not toys and therefore your allowed them I would not change her for any other :D. I just hope she will get into lego too ;) Quote
RockeTeK Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Ha! I got it! My own 8258 . I paid $157 (USD) for it. Is it a good price? Here in the Netherlands, the 8258 are on the shelves for EUR120,- so I guess you paid a good price for it. Quote
